Vanaparva Introduction

Vana Parva contains commencement of 12 years exile period in the Forest of Pandavas, along with Draupadi.  In spite of facing different ordeals, the Pandavas were able to complete the 12 years exile period in the Forest.

The major episodes in this Vana Parva are:

·       Commencement of 12 years exile period in the Forest of Pandavas, along with Draupadi

·       Arrival of Krishna and other Yadavas and Dhristhadyumna to meet Pandavas.  While Krishna depart with Subhadra and Abhimanyu, Dhristhadyumna departs with the sons of Draupadi

·       Arjuna learns Dance from Chitrasena, a Gandharva

·       Bhima defeats the Yakshas and brings Saugandhika flowers for Draupadi

·       Bhima kills Jatasura, a demon

·       Ghosha Yatra of Kauravas and Karna, to humiliate Pandavas, in the Forest area where the Pandavas were residing.  Kauravas get into fight with Gandharvas.  Karna get defeated and Duryodhana get caught as a prisoner by Gandharvas.  At the order of Yudhisthira, Bhima, Arjuna and others fight with Gandharvas and get released Duryodhana.

·       Abduction of Draupadi by Jayadradha, husband of Dusssala – sister of Duryodhana.  Arjuna and Bhima defeat Jayadradha and brings back Draupadi

·       Testing of moral strength of Yudhisthira by his father Dharma/Yama.
