Udyōgaparva Introduction

Udyōgaparva covers the efforts made by two (2) emissaries, ie., the Priest of Drupada and Krishna, sent by Yudhisthira to Hastinapura, to impress upon Dhritarashtra, Duryodhana and others in giving back their kingdom, lost in the game of dice, as the Pandavas successfully completed the 12 year period in the Forest and 1 year period incognito.

However, the two emissaries fail as Duryodhana was adamant in not giving back the kingdom won in the game of dice and due to his high hopes on Bhishma, Drona and Karna in winning the war, if Pandavas prefer it.

Both Kauravas and Pandavas gather their armies and prepare for the war at Kurukshetra. Finally, Kauravas were able to muster 11 Akṣauhiṇīs of army, while the Pandavas were able to muster 7 Akṣauhiṇīs of army.

Akṣauhiṇī (अक्षौहिणी).—A big division of an army. It is described in the Verses 19 to 26 in the 2nd Chapter of Ādi Parva.

One Akṣauhiṇī (अक्षौहिणी) consists of a large army consisting of 21,870 chariots, as many elephants, 65,610 horses, and 109,350 foot soldiers.
