वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ गते तु विदुरे राजन्नाश्रमं पाण्डवान्प्रति । धृतराष्ट्रो महाप्राज्ञः पर्यतप्यत भारत ॥ 1॥ स सभाद्वारमागम्य विदुरस्मारमोहितः । समक्षं पार्थिवेन्द्राणां पपाताविष्टचेतनः ॥ 2॥ स तु लब्ध्वा पुनः सञ्ज्ञां समुत्थाय महीतलात् । समीपोपस्थितं राजा सञ्जयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥ 3॥ भ्राता मम सुहृच्चैव साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः । तस्य स्मृत्वाद्य सुभृशं हृदयं दीर्यतीव मे ॥ 4॥ तमानयस्व धर्मज्ञं मम भ्रातरमाशु वै । इति ब्रुवन्स नृपतिः करुणं पर्यदेवयत् ॥ 5॥ पश्चात्तापाभिसन्तप्तो विदुरस्मारकर्शितः । भ्रातृस्नेहादिदं राजन्सञ्जयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥ 6॥ गच्छ सञ्जय जानीहि भ्रातरं विदुरं मम । यदि जीवति रोषेण मया पापेन निर्धुतः ॥ 7॥ न हि तेन मम भ्रात्रा सुसूक्ष्ममपि किञ्चन । व्यलीकं कृतपूर्वं मे प्राज्ञेनामितबुद्धिना ॥ 8॥ स व्यलीकं कथं प्राप्तो मत्तः परमबुद्धिमान् । न जह्याज्जीवितं प्राज्ञस्तं गच्छानय सञ्जय ॥ 9॥ तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राज्ञस्तमनुमान्य च । सञ्जयो बाढमित्युक्त्वा प्राद्रवत्काम्यकं वनम् ॥ 10॥ सोऽचिरेण समासाद्य तद्वनं यत्र पाण्डवाः । रौरवाजिनसंवीतं ददर्शाथ युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 11॥ विदुरेण सहासीनं ब्राह्मणैश्च सहस्रशः । भ्रातृभिश्चाभिसङ्गुप्तं देवैरिव शतक्रतुम् ॥ 12॥ युधिष्ठिरमथाभ्येत्य पूजयामास सञ्जयः । भीमार्जुनयमांश्चापि तदर्हं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥ 13॥ राज्ञा पृष्टः स कुशलं सुखासीनश्च सञ्जयः । शशंसागमने हेतुमिदं चैवाब्रवीद्वचः ॥ 14॥ राजा स्मरति ते क्षत्तर्धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः । तं पश्य गत्वा त्वं क्षिप्रं सञ्जीवय च पार्थिवम् ॥ 15॥ सोऽनुमान्य नरश्रेष्ठान्पाण्डवान्कुरुनन्दनान् । नियोगाद्राजसिंहस्य गन्तुमर्हसि मानद ॥ 16 एवमुक्तस्तु विदुरो धीमान्स्वजनवत्सलः । युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते पुनरायाद्गजाह्वयम् ॥ 17॥ तमब्रवीन्महाप्राज्ञं धृतराष्ट्रः प्रतापवान् । दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि धर्मज्ञ दिष्ट्या स्मरसि मेऽनघ ॥ 18॥ अद्य रात्रौ दिवा चाहं त्वत्कृते भरतर्षभ । प्रजागरे पपश्यामि विचित्रं देहमात्मनः ॥ 19॥ सोऽङ्कमादाय विदुरं मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय चैव ह । क्षम्यतामिति चोवाच यदुक्तोऽसि मया रुषा ॥ 20॥ विदुर उवाच॥ क्षान्तमेव मया राजन्गुरुर्नः परमो भवान् । तथा ह्यस्म्यागतः क्षिप्रं त्वद्दर्शनपरायणः ॥ 21॥ भवन्ति हि नरव्याघ्र पुरुषा धर्मचेतसः । दीनाभिपातिनो राजन्नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ 22॥ पाण्डोः सुता यादृशा मे तादृशा मे सुतास्तव । दीना इति हि मे बुद्धिरभिपन्नाद्य तान्प्रति ॥ 23॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ अन्योन्यमनुनीयैवं भ्रातरौ तौ महाद्युती । विदुरो धृतराष्ट्रश्च लेभाते परमां मुदम् ॥ 24॥ |

Vaisampayana said, 'O king, after Vidura went to live with the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra, wise beyond measure, regretted his actions. Remembering Vidura's great wisdom in both war and peace, and the future prosperity of the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra, filled with grief at the thought of Vidura, approached the hall's door and collapsed, fainting in front of the waiting kings. Regaining his senses, he stood up and spoke to Sanjaya, who was nearby, 'My brother and friend is like the god of justice himself! Remembering him today fills my heart with sorrow! Go and quickly bring my brother, who is skilled in righteousness!' With that, the king wept openly. Tormented by remorse and overwhelmed with sadness over Vidura, he again addressed Sanjaya out of brotherly love, saying, 'O Sanjaya, find out if my brother, whom I wrongfully banished in my rage, is still alive! That wise brother of mine, with his boundless intelligence, has never done anything wrong, yet he has suffered greatly at my hands! Go seek him, O wise one, and bring him here; otherwise, I will give up my life!' Vaisampayana continued, 'Upon hearing the king's words, Sanjaya nodded in approval and said, 'Very well,' as he headed towards the Kamyaka woods. He quickly reached the forest where the Pandavas lived and saw Yudhishthira, dressed in deer-skin, sitting with Vidura among thousands of Brahmanas, protected by his brothers, like Purandara among the gods! Approaching Yudhishthira, Sanjaya respectfully honoured him and was warmly welcomed by Bhima, Arjuna, and the twins. Yudhishthira asked about his well-being, and once Sanjaya was comfortably seated, he revealed his purpose: 'King Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, has remembered you! Please go back to him right away and revive the king! And, respected one, with these Kuru princes' consent—who are the greatest among men—you should return to him at the command of that lion-hearted king!' Vaisampayana continued, 'After Sanjaya’s request, the wise Vidura, always devoted to his family, with Yudhishthira's permission, returned to Hastinapura. Upon meeting the vigorous king, Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, he said, 'By my good fortune, O Vidura, you, who are free from sin and knowledgeable about virtue, have come to see me!'! And, O you noble bull of the Bharata lineage, in your absence I found myself restless, unable to sleep day or night, like one who feels lost on this earth! Then the king lifted Vidura onto his lap, smelled his head, and said, 'Forgive me, O virtuous one, for the words I spoke to you!' Vidura replied, 'O king, I have forgiven you. You are my superior and deserving of utmost respect! Here I am, returning with great eagerness to see you! All good-hearted people, O mighty man, naturally lean towards those in trouble! This is not a conscious choice! My loyalty to the Pandavas comes from this reason! O Bharata, your sons are as dear to me as the sons of Pandu, but since the latter are in distress, my heart goes out to them!" Vaisampayana continued, 'As they shared these sincere apologies, the two esteemed brothers, Vidura and Dhritarashtra, felt immense happiness together!' |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ श्रुत्वा च विदुरं प्राप्तं राज्ञा च परिसान्त्वितम् । धृतराष्ट्रात्मजो राजा पर्यतप्यत दुर्मतिः ॥ 1॥ स सौबलं समानाय्य कर्णदुःशासनावपि । अब्रवीद्वचनं राजा प्रविश्याबुद्धिजं तमः ॥ 2॥ एष प्रत्यागतो मन्त्री धृतराष्ट्रस्य संमतः । विदुरः पाण्डुपुत्राणां सुहृद्विद्वान्हिते रतः ॥ 3॥ यावदस्य पुनर्बुद्धिं विदुरो नापकर्षति । पाण्डवानयने तावन्मन्त्रयध्वं हितं मम ॥ 4॥ अथ पश्याम्यहं पार्थान्प्राप्तानिह कथञ्चन । पुनः शोषं गमिष्यामि निरासुर्निरवग्रहः ॥ 5॥ विषमुद्बन्धनं वापि शस्त्रमग्निप्रवेशनम् । करिष्ये न हि तानृद्धान्पुनर्द्रष्टुमिहोत्सहे ॥ 6॥ शकुनिरुवाच॥ किं बालिषां मतिं राजन्नास्थितोऽसि विशां पते । गतास्ते समयं कृत्वा नैतदेवं भविष्यति ॥7॥ सत्यवाक्ये स्थिताः सर्वे पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ । पितुस्ते वचनं तात न ग्रहीष्यन्ति कर्हिचित् ॥ 8॥ अथ वा ते ग्रहीष्यन्ति पुनरेष्यन्ति वा पुरम् । निरस्य समयं भूयः पणोऽस्माकं भविष्यति ॥ 9॥ सर्वे भवामो मध्यस्था राज्ञश्छन्दानुवर्तिनः । छिद्रं बहु प्रपश्यन्तः पाण्डवानां सुसंवृताः ॥ 10॥ दुःशासन उवाच॥ एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ यथा वदसि मातुल । नित्यं हि मे कथयतस्तव बुद्धिर्हि रोचते ॥ 11॥ कर्ण उवाच॥ काममीक्षामहे सर्वे दुर्योधन तवेप्सितम् । ऐकमत्यं हि नो राजन्सर्वेषामेव लक्ष्यते ॥ 12॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा । नातिहृष्टमनाः क्षिप्रमभवत्स पराङ्मुखः ॥ 13॥ उपलभ्य ततः कर्णो विवृत्य नयने शुभे । रोषाद्दुःशासनं चैव सौबलेयं च तावुभौ ॥ 14॥ उवाच परमक्रुद्ध उद्यम्यात्मानमात्मना । अहो मम मतं यत्तन्निबोधत नराधिपाः ॥ 15॥ प्रियं सर्वे चिकीर्षामो राज्ञः किङ्करपाणयः । न चास्य शक्नुमः सर्वे प्रिये स्थातुमतन्द्रिताः ॥ 16॥ वयं तु शस्त्राण्यादाय रथानास्थाय दंशिताः । गच्छामः सहिता हन्तुं पाण्डवान्वनगोचरान् ॥ 17॥ तेषु सर्वेषु शान्तेषु गतेष्वविदितां गतिम् । निर्विवादा भविष्यन्ति धार्तराष्ट्रास्तथा वयम् ॥ 18॥ यावदेव परिद्यूना यावच्छोकपरायणाः । यावन्मित्रविहीनाश्च तावच्छक्या मतं मम ॥ 19॥ तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पूजयन्तः पुनः पुनः । बाढमित्येव ते सर्वे प्रत्यूचुः सूतजं तदा ॥ 20॥ एवमुक्त्वा तु सङ्क्रुद्धा रथैः सर्वे पृथक्पृथक् । निर्ययुः पाण्डवान्हन्तुं सङ्घशः कृतनिश्चयाः ॥ 21॥ तान्प्रस्थितान्परिज्ञाय कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तदा । आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा दृष्ट्वा दिव्येन चक्षुषा ॥ 22॥ प्रतिषिध्याथ तान्सर्वान्भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः । प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमासीनमुवाचाभ्येत्य सत्वरः ॥ 23॥ |

" Vaisampayana said, 'Upon hearing that Vidura had returned and the king had comforted him, the treacherous son of Dhritarashtra was consumed by sorrow. His mind clouded by ignorance, he called forth the son of Suvala, along with Karna and Dussasana, and spoke to them, saying, 'The wise Vidura, advisor to the shrewd Dhritarashtra, has returned! He, a friend to the sons of Pandu, is always working for their good. Until Vidura convinces the king to bring them back, think of what might help me! If I ever see the sons of Pritha return to the city, I shall again waste away, refusing food and drink, regardless of the obstacles! I will either poison myself, hang myself, enter the fire, or take my own life with my weapons. Yet, I will never bear to see the sons of Pandu thrive!' 'Shakuni replied, 'O king, O ruler of the land, what madness has seized you! The Pandavas have gone into exile, having made a solemn vow, so your fears will never come true! O pride of the Bharata lineage, the Pandavas stick to their principles. They will never heed your father's words! But if they do return to the city, breaking their vow at the king's behest, we will feign neutrality while secretly watching the Pandavas and keeping our plans close!' "Dussasana said to Shakuni, 'Oh wise uncle, you speak the truth! Your words of wisdom resonate with me!' Karna replied, 'Oh Duryodhana, we all aim to fulfill your desires, and I can see that we are united in this moment! The sons of Pandu are disciplined and won’t return until their time is up. However, if they do come back, let us defeat them again at dice.' Vaisampayana continued, 'At Karna's words, Duryodhana, feeling downcast, turned away from his advisors. Observing this, Karna, with intense determination, angrily addressed Duryodhana, Dussasana, and Suvala's son, saying, 'Princes, heed my thoughts! We are all loyal servants of King Duryodhana, here to support him! So, we must act in ways that please him! Yet, often we are slow to assist him due to our reliance on Dhritarashtra. Now, let’s arm ourselves and rally together to eliminate the Pandavas who are living in the forest! Once the Pandavas are silenced and embark on their unknown journey, both we and Dhritarashtra’s sons will find peace! As long as they suffer and lack support, they remain vulnerable to us! This is my perspective.’ Upon hearing Karna’s words, they cheered him enthusiastically and finally shouted, 'Well done!' Then, each climbed onto their chariot, filled with confidence, and they charged together to defeat the sons of Pandu. Sensing this with his spiritual insight, the wise and pure Krishna-Dwaipayana approached them and commanded them to stop. Revered by all, he swiftly appeared before the king, who was relaxed and whose wisdom acted as his guide. The holy one addressed the king directly, disregarding everyone else. |

व्यास उवाच॥ धृतराष्ट्र महाप्राज्ञ निबोध वचनं मम । वक्ष्यामि त्वा कौरवाणां सर्वेषां हितमुत्तमम् ॥ 1॥ न मे प्रियं महाबाहो यद्गताः पाण्डवा वनम् । निकृत्या निर्जिताश्चैव दुर्योधनवशानुगैः ॥ 2॥ ते स्मरन्तः परिक्लेशान्वर्षे पूर्णे त्रयोदशे । विमोक्ष्यन्ति विषं क्रुद्धाः करवेयेषु भारत ॥ 3॥ तदयं किं नु पापात्मा तव पुत्रः सुमन्दधीः । पाण्डवान्नित्यसङ्क्रुद्धो राज्यहेतोर्जिघांसति ॥ 4॥ वार्यतां साध्वयं मूढः शमं गच्छतु ते सुतः । वनस्थांस्तानयं हन्तुमिच्छन्प्राणैर्विमोक्ष्यते ॥ 5॥ यथाह विदुरः प्राज्ञो यथा भीष्मो यथा वयम् । यथा कृपश्च द्रोणश्च तथा साधु विधीयताम् ॥ 6॥ विग्रहो हि महाप्राज्ञ स्वजनेन विगर्हितः । अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च मा राजन्प्रतिपद्यथाः ॥ 7॥ समीक्षा यादृशी ह्यस्य पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत । उपेक्ष्यमाणा सा राजन्महान्तमनयं स्पृशेत् ॥ 8॥ अथ वायं सुमन्दात्मा वनं गच्छतु ते सुतः । पाण्डवैः सहितो राजन्नेक एवासहायवान् ॥ 9॥ ततः संसर्गजः स्नेहः पुत्रस्य तव पाण्डवैः । यदि स्यात्कृतकार्योऽद्य भवेस्त्वं मनुजेश्वर ॥ 10॥ अथ वा जायमानस्य यच्छीलमनुजायते । श्रूयते तन्महाराज नामृतस्यापसर्पति ॥ 11॥ कथं वा मन्यते भीष्मो द्रोणो वा विदुरोऽपि वा । भवान्वात्र क्षमं कार्यं पुरा चार्थोऽतिवर्तते ॥ 12॥ |

"Vyasa said, 'O wise Dhritarashtra, listen to my words! I will share with you what is truly beneficial for all the Kauravas! O strong one, I am not pleased that the Pandavas have been unfairly sent into exile after losing at dice against Duryodhana and the others! O Bharata, when the thirteenth year is over, recalling their suffering, they may unleash devastating weapons upon the Kauravas, like deadly poison! Why does your unrepentant son, filled with hatred, seek to destroy the sons of Pandu just for their kingdom? Let that fool be restrained; let your son keep the peace! If he attempts to kill the Pandavas while in exile, he will only bring about his own doom. You are as honourable as wise Vidura, Bhishma, ourselves, Kripa, or Drona, O wise king; fighting with one’s own family is forbidden, sinful, and shameful! Therefore, O king, you must refrain from such actions! And, O Bharata, Duryodhana harbours such envy towards the Pandavas that great disaster will follow if you do not intervene. Or let this wicked son of yours, O monarch, go to the forest alone and live with the sons of Pandu. For if the Pandavas grow fond of Duryodhana through their time together, good fortune may come to you. For it is said that a person's true nature does not change until death. But what do Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura think? And what is your own opinion? What is right should be done while there’s still time, or else your goals will remain unachieved..'" |
