धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥ भगवन्नाहमप्येतद्रोचये द्यूतसंस्तवम् । मन्ये तद्विधिनाक्रम्य कारितोऽस्मीति वै मुने ॥ 1॥ नैतद्रोचयते भीष्मो न द्रोणो विदुरो न च । गान्धारी नेच्छति द्यूतं तच्च मोहात्प्रवर्तितम् ॥ 2॥ परित्यक्तुं न शक्नोमि दुर्योधनमचेतनम् । पुत्रस्नेहेन भगवञ्जानन्नपि यतव्रत ॥ 3॥ व्यास उवाच॥ वैचित्रवीर्य नृपते सत्यमाह यथा भवान् । दृढं वेद्मि परं पुत्रं परं पुत्रान्न विद्यते ॥ 4॥ यादृशो मे सुतः पण्डुस्तादृशो मेऽसि पुत्रक । विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञः स्नेहादेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥ 5॥ चिराय तव पुत्राणां शतमेकश्च पार्थिव । पाण्डोः पञ्चैव लक्ष्यन्ते तेऽपि मन्दाः सुदुःखिताः ॥ 6॥ कथं जीवेयुरत्यन्तं कथं वर्धेयुरित्यपि । इति दीनेषु पार्थेषु मनो मे परितप्यते ॥ 7॥ यदि पार्थिव कौरव्याञ्जीवमानानिहेच्छसि । दुर्योधनस्तव सुतः शमं गच्छतु पाण्डवैः ॥ 8॥ |

" King Dhritarashtra said, 'O holy sage, I never approved of this gambling, but it seems that fate led me to accept it! Neither Bhishma, nor Drona, nor Vidura, nor my wife Gandhari wanted this game of dice. It was undoubtedly a foolish act. And, O revered one who respects vows, despite knowing everything, I am still swayed by parental love, and I cannot abandon my reckless son, Duryodhana!' Vyasa replied, 'O king, Dhritarashtra, you speak the truth! We all know that a son is one of life’s greatest blessings, and there is nothing better than having a son. Just as my son Pandu holds a special place in my heart, so do you, and so does the wise Vidura! I share this out of love! O Bharata, you have over a hundred sons, while Pandu has only five, and they are suffering greatly. My heart aches for the plight of Pritha’s distressed sons! O king, if you wish for the Kauravas to survive, urge your son Duryodhana to make peace with the Pandavas!''" |

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥ एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ यथा वदसि नो मुने । अहं चैव विजानामि सर्वे चेमे नराधिपाः ॥ 1॥ भवांस्तु मन्यते साधु यत्कुरूणां सुखोदयम् । तदेव विदुरोऽप्याह भीष्मो द्रोणश्च मां मुने ॥ 2॥ यदि त्वहमनुग्राह्यः कौरवेषु दया यदि । अनुशाधि दुरात्मानं पुत्रं दुर्योधनं मम ॥ 3॥ व्यास उवाच॥ अयमायाति वै राजन्मैत्रेयो भगवानृषिः । अन्वीय पाण्डवान्भ्रातॄनिहैवास्मद्दिदृक्षया ॥ 4॥ एष दुर्योधनं पुत्रं तव राजन्महानृषिः । अनुशास्ता यथान्यायं शमायास्य कुलस्य ते ॥ 5॥ ब्रूयाद्यदेष राजेन्द्र तत्कार्यमविशङ्कया । अक्रियायां हि कार्यस्य पुत्रं ते शप्स्यते रुषा ॥ 6॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ एवमुक्त्वा ययौ व्यासो मैत्रेयः प्रत्यदृश्यत । पूजया प्रतिजग्राह सपुत्रस्तं नराधिपः ॥ 7॥ दत्त्वार्घ्याद्याः क्रियाः सर्वा विश्रान्तं मुनिपुङ्गवम् । प्रश्रयेणाब्रवीद्राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥ 8॥ सुखेनागमनं कच्चिद्भगवन्कुरुजाङ्गले । कच्चित्कुशलिनो वीरा भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः ॥ 9॥ समये स्थातुमिच्छन्ति कच्चिच्च पुरुषर्षभाः । कच्चित्कुरूणां सौभ्रात्रमव्युच्छिन्नं भविष्यति ॥ 10॥ मैत्रेय उवाच॥ तीर्थयात्रामनुक्रामन्प्राप्तोऽस्मि कुरुजाङ्गलम् । यदृच्छया धर्मराजं दृष्टवान्काम्यके वने ॥ 11॥ तं जटाजिनसंवीतं तपोवननिवासिनम् । समाजग्मुर्महात्मानं द्रष्टुं मुनिगणाः प्रभो ॥ 12॥ तत्राश्रौषं महाराज पुत्राणां तव विभ्रमम् । अनयं द्यूतरूपेण महापायमुपस्थितम् ॥ 13॥ ततोऽहं त्वामनुप्राप्तः कौरवाणामवेक्षया । सदा ह्यभ्यधिकः स्नेहः प्रीतिश्च त्वयि मे प्रभो ॥ 14॥ नैतदौपयिकं राजंस्त्वयि भीष्मे च जीवति । यदन्योन्येन ते पुत्रा विरुध्यन्ते नराधिप ॥ 15॥ मेढीभूतः स्वयं राजन्निग्रहे प्रग्रहे भवान् । किमर्थमनयं घोरमुत्पतन्तमुपेक्षसे ॥ 16॥ दस्यूनामिव यद्वृत्तं सभायां कुरुनन्दन । तेन न भ्राजसे राजंस्तापसानां समागमे ॥ 17॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततो व्यावृत्य राजानं दुर्योधनममर्षणम् । उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा मैत्रेयो भगवानृषिः ॥ 18॥ दुर्योधन महाबाहो निबोध वदतां वर । वचनं मे महाप्राज्ञ ब्रुवतो यद्धितं तव ॥ 19॥ मा द्रुहः पाण्डवान्राजन्कुरुष्व हितमात्मनः । पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च लोकस्य च नरर्षभ ॥ 20॥ ते हि सर्वे नरव्याघ्राः शूरा विक्रान्तयोधिनः । सर्वे नागायुतप्राणा वज्रसंहनना दृढाः ॥ 21॥ सत्यव्रतपराः सर्वे सर्वे पुरुषमानिनः । हन्तारो देवशत्रूणां रक्षसां कामरूपिणाम् ॥ हिडिम्बबकमुख्यानां किर्मीरस्य च रक्षसः ॥ 22॥ इतः प्रच्यवतां रात्रौ यः स तेषां महात्मनाम् । आवृत्य मार्गं रौद्रात्मा तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥ 23॥ तं भीमः समरश्लाघी बलेन बलिनां वरः । जघान पशुमारेण व्याघ्रः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा ॥ 24॥ पश्य दिग्विजये राजन्यथा भीमेन पातितः । जरासन्धो महेष्वासो नागायुतबलो युधि ॥ 25॥ सम्बन्धी वासुदेवश्च येषां श्यालश्च पार्षतः । कस्तान्युधि समासीत जरामरणवान्नरः ॥ 26॥ तस्य ते शम एवास्तु पाण्डवैर्भरतर्षभ । कुरु मे वचनं राजन्मा मृत्युवशमन्वगाः ॥ 27॥ एवं तु ब्रुवतस्तस्य मैत्रेयस्य विशां पते । ऊरुं गजकराकारं करेणाभिजघान सः ॥ 28॥ दुर्योधनः स्मितं कृत्वा चरणेनालिखन्महीम् । न किञ्चिदुक्त्वा दुर्मेधास्तस्थौ किञ्चिदवाङ्मुखः ॥ 29॥ तमशुश्रूषमाणं तु विलिखन्तं वसुन्धराम् । दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनं राजन्मैत्रेयं कोप आविशत् ॥ 30॥ स कोपवशमापन्नो मैत्रेयो मुनिसत्तमः । विधिना सम्प्रयुक्तश्च शापायास्य मनो दधे ॥ 31॥ ततः स वार्युपस्पृश्य कोपसंरक्तलोचनः । मैत्रेयो धार्तराष्ट्रं तमशपद्दुष्टचेतसम् ॥ 32॥ यस्मात्त्वं मामनादृत्य नेमां वाचं चिकीर्षसि । तस्मादस्याभिमानस्य सद्यः फलमवाप्नुहि ॥ 33॥ त्वदभिद्रोहसंयुक्तं युद्धमुत्पत्स्यते महत् । यत्र भीमो गदापातैस्तवोरुं भेत्स्यते बली ॥ 34॥ इत्येवमुक्ते वचने धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः । प्रसादयामास मुनिं नैतदेवं भवेदिति ॥ 35॥ मैत्रेय उवाच॥ शमं यास्यति चेत्पुत्रस्तव राजन्यथा तथा । शापो न भविता तात विपरीते भविष्यति ॥ 36॥ |

Dhritarashtra said, 'O wise sage, you speak the truth! I and the other kings understand it well! Indeed, what you see as good for the Kurus was pointed out to me by Vidura, Bhishma, and Drona. If I have earned your favour and you care for the Kurus, please advise my troubled son Duryodhana!' Vyasa replied, 'O king, having seen the Pandava brothers, the holy sage Maitreya is coming to meet us. This powerful sage will counsel your son for the good of our family. And, O Kauravya, you must follow his advice without question, for if you ignore his guidance, he may curse your son in anger.' Vaisampayana continued, 'After saying this, Vyasa left, and Maitreya arrived. The king and his son greeted the tired sage with respect, offering him Arghya and other rites. King Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, spoke kindly to the sage, saying, 'O holy one, was your journey from Kuru-jangala pleasant? Are those great heroes, the five Pandavas, living happily? Do they plan to stay till their time is up? Will the bond of brotherhood among the Kauravas ever be broken?' "Maitreya said, 'As I journeyed to various sacred sites, I unexpectedly encountered the just Yudhishthira in the Kamyaka woods. Many sages had gathered there to see the noble Yudhishthira, living as an ascetic, dressed in deer skin and with matted hair. It was here, O great king, that I learned of the serious mistake made by your sons and the dire consequences resulting from their gambling. That is why I have come to you, for the sake of the Kauravas, driven by my deep affection for you and my admiration for you! O king, it is inappropriate for your sons to conflict with each other while you and Bhishma are still alive. You are the anchor, the one who can guide and deliver justice! Why, then, do you ignore this grave threat looming over all? O descendant of the Kurus, given the misdeeds that have taken place in your court, you are not held in high regard by the ascetics!' Vaisampayana continued, 'Turning to the angry prince Duryodhana, the esteemed sage Maitreya spoke gently, 'O strong-armed Duryodhana, greatest of orators, listen closely to my words for your own benefit! O king, do not start a feud with the Pandavas! O noble one, pursue the well-being of yourself, the Pandavas, the Kauravas, and the world! Those brave warriors are heroes of exceptional skill in battle, as strong as ten thousand elephants, unyielding in their promises, and proud of their valour! They have defeated the celestial foes—the Rakshasas, capable of changing shapes, led by Hidimba and Kirmira!'! When those noble souls departed, that fierce Rakshasa blocked their night path like an unyielding mountain. Just as a tiger takes down a small deer, Bhima, the strongest among them and ever eager for a fight, killed that monster. Consider, O king, how Bhima, during his campaign of conquest, defeated the great warrior Jarasandha, who had the strength of ten thousand elephants. Linked to Vasudeva, and with the sons of King Drupada as their brothers-in-law, who would dare face them in battle while subject to age and death? O pride of the Bharata lineage, let there be peace between you and the Pandavas! Heed my advice and do not give in to anger! ‘After being advised by Maitreya, Duryodhana began to hit his thigh, resembling an elephant's trunk, and mockingly scratched the ground with his foot. The wicked man fell silent, hanging his head. And, O monarch, seeing Duryodhana silently insult him, Maitreya grew angry. As if driven by fate, Maitreya, the greatest among sages, filled with wrath, decided to curse Duryodhana! His eyes burning with anger, Maitreya touched water and condemned the ill-hearted son of Dhritarashtra, saying, ‘Since you have chosen to disrespect me and not follow my words, you will soon face the consequences of your pride! In the great war stemming from your wrongdoings, the mighty Bhima will shatter your thigh with a blow from his mace! ‘When the sage spoke this, King Dhritarashtra tried to pacify him, hoping to prevent the curse from coming true. But Maitreya stated, ‘O king, if your son makes peace with the Pandavas, my curse will not take effect; otherwise, it shall be as I have proclaimed!’ |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ भोजाः प्रव्रजिताञ्श्रुत्वा वृष्णयश्चान्धकैः सह । पाण्डवान्दुःखसन्तप्तान्समाजग्मुर्महावने ॥ 1॥ पाञ्चालस्य च दायादा धृष्टकेतुश्च चेदिपः । केकयाश्च महावीर्या भ्रातरो लोकविश्रुताः ॥ 2॥ वने तेऽभिययुः पार्थान्क्रोधामर्शसमन्विताः । गर्हयन्तो धार्तराष्ट्रान्किं कुर्म इति चाब्रुवन् ॥ 3॥ वासुदेवं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वे ते क्षत्रियर्षभाः । परिवार्योपविविशुर्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 4। वासुदेव उवाच॥ नेदं कृच्छ्रमनुप्राप्तो भवान्स्याद्वसुधाधिप । यद्यहं द्वारकायां स्यां राजन्संनिहितः पुरा ॥ 5॥ आगच्छेयमहं द्यूतमनाहूतोऽपि कौरवैः । आम्बिकेयेन दुर्धर्ष राज्ञा दुर्योधनेन च ॥ 6॥ वारयेयमहं द्यूतं बहून्दोषान्प्रदर्शयन् । भीष्मद्रोणौ समानाय्य कृपं बाह्लीकमेव च ॥ 7॥ वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानमलं द्यूतेन कौरव । पुत्राणां तव राजेन्द्र त्वन्निमित्तमिति प्रभो ॥ 8॥ तत्र वक्ष्याम्यहं दोषान्यैर्भवानवरोपितः । वीरसेनसुतो यैश्च राज्यात्प्रभ्रंशितः पुरा ॥ 9॥ अभक्षितविनाशं च देवनेन विशां पते । एवमुक्तो यदि मया गृह्णीयाद्वचनं मम । अनामयं स्याद्धर्मस्य कुरूणां कुरुनन्दन ॥ 10॥ न चेत्स मम राजेन्द्र गृह्णीयान्मधुरं वचः । पथ्यं च भरतश्रेष्ठ निगृह्णीयां बलेन तम् ॥ 11॥ अथैनानभिनीयैवं सुहृदो नाम दुर्हृदः । सभासदश्च तान्सर्वान्भेदयेयं दुरोदरान् ॥ 12॥ असांनिध्यं तु कौरव्य ममानर्तेष्वभूत्तदा । येनेदं व्यसनं प्राप्ता भवन्तो द्यूतकारितम् ॥ 13॥ सोऽहमेत्य कुरुश्रेष्ठ द्वारकां पाण्डुनन्दन । अश्रौषं त्वां व्यसनिनं युयुधानाद्यथातथम् ॥ 14॥ श्रुत्वैव चाहं राजेन्द्र परमोद्विग्नमानसः । तूर्णमभ्यागतोऽस्मि त्वां द्रष्टुकामो विशां पते ॥ 15॥ अहो कृच्छ्रमनुप्राप्ताः सर्वे स्म भरतर्षभ । ये वयं त्वां व्यसनिनं पश्यामः सह सोदरैः ॥ 16॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुः कौरवं पुरुषोत्तमः । आमन्त्र्य प्रययौ धीमान्पाण्डवान्मधुसूदनः ॥ 17॥ अभिवाद्य महाबाहुर्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् । राज्ञा मूर्धन्युपाघ्रातो भीमेन च महाभुजः ॥ 18॥ सुभद्रामभिमन्युं च रथमारोप्य काञ्चनम् । आरुरोह रथं कृष्णः पाण्डवैरभिपूजितः ॥ 19॥ सैन्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा । द्वारकां प्रययौ कृष्णः समाश्वास्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 20 ततः प्रयाते दाशार्हे धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि पार्षतः । द्रौपदेयानुपादाय प्रययौ स्वपुरं तदा ॥ 21॥ धृष्टकेतुः स्वसारं च समादायाथ चेदिराट् । जगाम पाण्डवान्दृष्ट्वा रम्यां शुक्तिमतीं पुरीम् ॥ 22॥ केकयाश्चाप्यनुज्ञाताः कौन्तेयेनामितौजसा । आमन्त्र्य पाण्डवान्सर्वान्प्रययुस्तेऽपि भारत ॥ 23॥ ब्राह्मणाश्च विशश्चैव तथा विषयवासिनः । विसृज्यमानाः सुभृशं न त्यजन्ति स्म पाण्डवान् ॥ 24॥ समवायः स राजेन्द्र सुमहाद्भुतदर्शनः । आसीन्महात्मनां तेषां काम्यके भरतर्षभ ॥ 25॥ युधिष्ठिरस्तु विप्रांस्ताननुमान्य महामनाः । शशास पुरुषान्काले रथान्योजयतेति ह ॥ 26॥ |

Vaisampayana said, 'Upon hearing that the Pandavas had been exiled, the Bhojas, Vrishnis, and Andhakas traveled to the great forest to comfort these suffering heroes. The relatives of Panchala, King Dhrishtaketu of Chedi, and the renowned Kaikeyas, incensed and driven by anger, also went into the forest to see the sons of Pritha. They confronted the sons of Dhritarashtra, asking, 'What should we do?' The noble warriors of the Kshatriya lineage, led by Vasudeva, gathered around Yudhishthira the just. With deep respect, Kesava addressed that foremost of the Kurus, saying, 'O ruler of the land, if I had been at Dwaraka, this misfortune would not have befallen you! Even if uninvited by Dhritarashtra's son Duryodhana or the other Kauravas, I would have come to the gambling match to prevent it, calling upon Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Bahlika to help. For your sake, I would have warned the son of Vichitravirya, urging him to keep his sons away from dice! I would have laid bare the many dangers of gambling that led you to such grief, just as Nala lost his kingdom.' If he had listened to my words, the well-being of the Kurus and the essence of virtue would have been preserved! And, O greatest of kings, if he had turned away from my gentle advice, which I offered like a remedy, I would have forced him to listen! If those around him, who claim to be friends but are really his enemies, had backed him, I would have taken them all down, along with those gamblers present! O Kauravya, it is because I was away from the Anartta land that you have fallen into this trouble caused by dice! O best of Kurus, O son of Pandu, when I arrived at Dwarka, Yuyudhana told me of your misfortune! O greatest of kings, upon hearing this, with a heavy heart filled with sorrow, I hurried here to see you, O king! Alas! O strong one of the Bharata lineage, you are all in deep trouble! I see you and your brothers caught in hardship! Vaisampayana continued, "After addressing the mighty Kaurava, the strong warrior and slayer of Madhu, he respectfully saluted the Pandavas and prepared to leave. The powerful hero bowed to Yudhishthira, who reciprocated with a bow, while Bhima honored him by smelling the crown of his head. Arjuna embraced him, and the twins respectfully saluted him. Dhaumya honoured him properly, and Draupadi wept as she worshipped him. Taking Subhadra and Abhimanyu with him, Krishna climbed aboard his golden chariot, receiving worship from the Pandavas. Consoling Yudhishthira, Krishna set off for Dwaraka in his brilliant chariot drawn by the horses Saivya and Sugriva. After Krishna, of the Dasharha lineage left, Dhristadyumna, departed for his home with the sons of Draupadi. The Chedi king, Dhrishtaketu, also left for his lovely city of Suktimati, taking his sister with him and bidding farewell to the Pandavas. Furthermore, the Kaikeyas departed, with Kunti's energetic son granting them permission, having reverently saluted the Pandavas. Yet, the Brahmanas, Vaisyas, and residents of Yudhishthira's kingdom, despite being urged to leave, chose to stay with the Pandavas.". |
