वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

जयद्रथस्तु सम्प्रेक्ष्य भ्रातरावुद्यतायुधौ ।

प्राद्रवत्तूर्णमव्यग्रो जीवितेप्सुः सुदुःखितः ॥ 1॥

तं भीमसेनो धावन्तमवतीर्य रथाद्बली ।

अभिद्रुत्य निजग्राह केशपक्षेऽत्यमर्षणः ॥ 2॥

समुद्यम्य च तं रोषान्निष्पिपेष महीतले ।

गले गृहीत्वा राजानं ताडयामास चैव ह ॥ 3॥

पुनः सञ्जीवमानस्य तस्योत्पतितुमिच्छतः ।

पदा मूर्ध्नि महाबाहुः प्राहरद्विलपिष्यतः ॥ 4॥

तस्य जानुं ददौ भीमो जघ्ने चैनमरत्निना ।

स मोहमगमद्राजा प्रहारवरपीडितः ॥ 5॥

विरोषं भीमसेनं तु वारयामास फल्गुनः ।

दुःशलायाः कृते राजा यत्तदाहेति कौरव ॥ 6॥

भीमसेन उवाच॥

नायं पापसमाचारो मत्तो जीवितुमर्हति ।

द्रौपद्यास्तदनर्हायाः परिक्लेष्टा नराधमः ॥ 7॥

किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद्राजा सततं घृणी ।

त्वं च बालिशया बुद्ध्या सदैवास्मान्प्रबाधसे ॥ 8॥

एवमुक्त्वा सटास्तस्य पञ्च चक्रे वृकोदरः ।

अर्धचन्द्रेण बाणेन किञ्चिदब्रुवतस्तदा ॥ 9॥

विकल्पयित्वा राजानं ततः प्राह वृकोदरः ।

जीवितुं चेच्छसे मूढ हेतुं मे गदतः शृणु ॥ 10॥

दासोऽस्मीति त्वया वाच्यं संसत्सु च सभासु च ।

एवं ते जीवितं दद्यामेष युद्धजितो विधिः ॥ 11॥

एवमस्त्विति तं राजा कृच्छ्रप्राणो जयद्रथः ।

प्रोवाच पुरुषव्याघ्रं भीममाहवशोभिनम् ॥ 12॥

तत एनं विचेष्टन्तं बद्ध्वा पार्थो वृकोदरः ।

रथमारोपयामास विसञ्ज्ञं पांसुगुण्ठितम् ॥ 13॥

ततस्तं रथमास्थाय भीमः पार्थानुगस्तदा ।

अभ्येत्याश्रममध्यस्थमभ्यगच्छद्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 14॥

दर्शयामास भीमस्तु तदवस्थं जयद्रथम् ।

तं राजा प्राहसद्दृष्ट्वा मुच्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥ 15॥

राजानं चाब्रवीद्भीमो द्रौपद्यै कथयेति वै ।

दासभावं गतो ह्येष पाण्डूनां पापचेतनः ॥ 16॥

तमुवाच ततो ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सप्रणयं वचः ।

मुञ्चैनमधमाचारं प्रमाणं यदि ते वयम् ॥ 17॥

द्रौपदी चाब्रवीद्भीममभिप्रेक्ष्य युधिष्ठिरम् ।

दासोऽयं मुच्यतां राज्ञस्त्वया पञ्चसटः कृतः ॥ 18॥

स मुक्तोऽभ्येत्य राजानमभिवाद्य युधिष्ठिरम् ।

ववन्दे विह्वलो राजा तांश्च सर्वान्मुनींस्तदा ॥ 19॥

तमुवाच घृणी राजा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।

तथा जयद्रथं दृष्ट्वा गृहीतं सव्यसाचिना ॥ 20॥

अदासो गच्छ मुक्तोऽसि मैवं कार्षीः पुनः क्वचित् ।

स्त्रीकामुक धिगस्तु त्वां क्षुद्रः क्षुद्रसहायवान् ॥

एवंविधं हि कः कुर्यात्त्वदन्यः पुरुषाधमः ॥ 21॥

गतसत्त्वमिव ज्ञात्वा कर्तारमशुभस्य तम् ।

सम्प्रेक्ष्य भरतश्रेष्ठः कृपां चक्रे नराधिपः ॥ 22॥

धर्मे ते वर्धतां बुद्धिर्मा चाधर्मे मनः कृथाः ।

साश्वः सरथपादातः स्वस्ति गच्छ जयद्रथ ॥ 23॥

एवमुक्तस्तु सव्रीडं तूष्णीं किञ्चिदवाङ्मुखः ।

जयद्रथोऽपि मंदात्मा स्वमेव भवनं ययौ ॥24

Vaisampayana said, "Fleeing for his life upon seeing those two brothers standing tall, Jayadratha was filled with fear and ran away quickly and calmly. But the strong and furious Bhimasena got down from his chariot and chased after him, grabbing him by the hair. Lifting him high, Bhima slammed him down to the ground with force. He then held the prince by the head and struck him repeatedly. When the coward finally came to his senses, he moaned and tried to stand up. But that hero, with his powerful arms, kicked him on the head. Bhima pressed him down with his knees and fists, and soon the battered prince lost consciousness. 

Then Phalguna tried to calm the angry Bhimasena, reminding him of Yudhishthira’s words about their sister Dussala. But Bhima replied, 'This wicked man has harmed Draupadi, who cannot tolerate such disgrace. He deserves to die at my hands! But what can I do? The king is always full of mercy, and you keep getting in my way with your childish sense of righteousness!' After saying this, Vrikodara used his crescent-shaped arrow to shave the prince’s head, leaving five tufts of hair in different spots. Jayadratha didn’t utter a word." 

Then Vrikodara spoke to his enemy, saying, 'If you wish to live, listen to me, fool! I will reveal how you might survive! In public gatherings and courts, you must declare, 'I am a servant of the Pandavas.' Only on this condition will I spare your life! This is the way of victory in battle.' King Jayadratha, trembling and covered in dust, replied to the fierce warrior, 'So be it!' Arjuna and Vrikodara then chained him and placed him in a chariot. Bhima, climbing aboard, and joined by Arjuna, drove toward the hermitage. When they reached Yudhishthira, who was seated there, they presented Jayadratha before the king. Smiling, Yudhishthira instructed them to release the Sindhu prince. Bhima then told the king, 'Inform Draupadi that this scoundrel is now a servant of the Pandavas.' Yudhishthira, affectionately, urged, 'If you care for us, set him free!' Draupadi, sensing the king's intent, said, 'Release him! He is now the king's servant, and you’ve humiliated him by leaving five strands of hair on his head.' The humbled prince, now freed, approached King Yudhishthira and bowed before him, also saluting the sages present.

The compassionate King Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, saw Jayadratha in such a state, nearly supported by Arjuna, and said to him, 'You are free now; I set you free! Now leave and don’t ever act this way again; you should be ashamed! You intended to abduct a lady using force, even though you're so weak and cowardly! Who else, but you, would even consider such a vile act?' The wise king of the Bharata clan looked at the wicked man with pity, believing he had lost his mind, and said, 'May your heart grow in virtue! Never again pursue immoral actions! You may leave in peace now with your chariots, cavalry, and infantry.' After Yudhishthira spoke, the foolish Jayadratha, filled with shame and lowering his head, sadly made his way back to his home.

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

अभिप्रायमथो ज्ञात्वा महेन्द्रस्य विभावसुः ।

कुण्डलार्थे महाराज सूर्यः कर्णमुपागमत् ॥ 1॥

महार्हे शयने वीरं स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते ।

शयानमभिविश्वस्तं ब्रह्मण्यं सत्यवादिनम् ॥ 2॥

स्वप्नान्ते निशि राजेन्द्र दर्शयामास रश्मिवान् ।

कृपया परयाविष्टः पुत्रस्नेहाच्च भारत ॥ 3॥

ब्राह्मणो वेदविद्भूत्वा सूर्यो योगाद्धि रूपवान् ।

हितार्थमब्रवीत्कर्णं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥ 4॥

कर्ण मद्वचनं तात शृणु सत्यभृतां वर ।

ब्रुवतोऽद्य महाबाहो सौहृदात्परमं हितम् ॥ 5॥

उपायास्यति शक्रस्त्वां पाण्डवानां हितेप्सया ।

ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना कर्ण कुण्डलापजिहीर्षया ॥ 6॥

तस्मै प्रयाचमानाय न देये कुण्डले त्वया ।

अनुनेयः परं शक्त्या श्रेय एतद्धि ते परम् ॥ 7॥

अहं तात सहस्रांशुः सौहृदात्त्वां निदर्शये ।

कुरुष्वैतद्वचो मे त्वमेतच्छ्रेयः परं हि ते ॥ 8॥

यद्यागच्छति शक्रो मां ब्राह्मणच्छद्मनावृतः ।

हितार्थं पाण्डुपुत्राणां खेचरोत्तम भिक्षितुम् ॥ 9॥

दास्यामि विबुधश्रेष्ठ कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ।

न मे कीर्तिः प्रणश्येत त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ॥ 10॥

मद्विधस्यायशस्यं हि न युक्तं प्राणरक्षणम् ।

युक्तं हि यशसा युक्तं मरणं लोकसंमतम् ॥ 11॥

सूर्य उवाच॥

यदि तात ददास्येते वज्रिणे कुण्डले शुभे ।

त्वमप्येनमथो ब्रूया विजयार्थं महाबल ॥ 12॥

नियमेन प्रदद्यास्त्वं कुण्डले वै शतक्रतोः ।

अवध्यो ह्यसि भूतानां कुण्डलाभ्यां समन्वितः ॥13 ॥

अर्जुनेन विनाशं हि तव दानवसूदनः ।

प्रार्थयानो रणे वत्स कुण्डले ते जिहीर्षति ॥ 14॥

स त्वमप्येनमाराध्य सूनृताभिः पुनः पुनः ।

अभ्यर्थयेथा देवेशममोघार्थं पुरंदरम् ॥ 15॥

अमोघां देहि मे शक्तिममित्रविनिबर्हिणीम् ।

दास्यामि ते सहस्राक्ष कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ॥ 16॥

इत्येवं नियमेन त्वं दद्याः शक्राय कुण्डले ।

तया त्वं कर्ण सङ्ग्रामे हनिष्यसि रणे रिपून् ॥ 17॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

यदा तु कर्णो राजेन्द्र भानुमन्तं दिवाकरम् ।

स्तौति मध्यंदिने प्राप्ते प्राञ्जलिः सलिले स्थितः ॥ 18।

तत्रैनमुपतिष्ठन्ति ब्राह्मणा धनहेतवः ।

नादेयं तस्य तत्काले किञ्चिदस्ति द्विजातिषु ॥ 19॥

तमिन्द्रो ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा भिक्षां देहीत्युपस्थितः ।

स्वागतं चेति राधेयस्तमथ प्रत्यभाषत ॥ 20॥

देवराजमनुप्राप्तं ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना वृषः ।

दृष्ट्वा स्वागतमित्याह न बुबोधास्य मानसम् ॥ 21॥

हिरण्यकण्ठीः प्रमदा ग्रामान्वा बहुगोकुलान् ।

किं ददानीति तं विप्रमुवाचाधिरथिस्ततः ॥ 22॥

ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

हिरण्यकण्ठ्यः प्रमदा यच्चान्यत्प्रीतिवर्धनम् ।

नाहं दत्तमिहेच्छामि तदर्थिभ्यः प्रदीयताम् ॥ 23

यदेतत्सहजं वर्म कुण्डले च तवानघ ।

एतदुत्कृत्य मे देहि यदि सत्यव्रतो भवान् ॥ 24

एतदिच्छाम्यहं क्षिप्रं त्वया दत्तं परन्तप ।

एष मे सर्वलाभानां लाभः परमको मतः ॥ 25॥

कर्ण उवाच॥

अवनिं प्रमदा गाश्च निर्वापं बहुवार्षिकम् ।

तत्ते विप्र प्रदास्यामि न तु वर्म न कुण्डले ॥ 26॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्याच्यमानः स तु द्विजः ।

कर्णेन भरतश्रेष्ठ नान्यं वरमयाचत ॥ 27॥

विदितो देवदेवेश प्रागेवासि मम प्रभो ।

न तु न्याय्यं मया दातुं तव शक्र वृथा वरम् ॥ 28॥

त्वं हि देवेश्वरः साक्षात्त्वया देयो वरो मम ।

अन्येषां चैव भूतानामीश्वरो ह्यसि भूतकृत् ॥ 29॥

तस्माद्विनिमयं कृत्वा कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ।

हरस्व शक्र कामं मे न दद्यामहमन्यथा ॥ 30॥

शक्र उवाच॥

विदितोऽहं रवेः पूर्वमायन्नेव तवान्तिकम् ।

तेन ते सर्वमाख्यातमेवमेतन्न संशयः ॥ 31॥

काममस्तु तथा तात तव कर्ण यथेच्छसि ।

वर्जयित्वा तु मे वज्रं प्रवृणीष्व यदिच्छसि ॥ 32॥

कर्ण उवाच॥

वर्मणा कुण्डलाभ्यां च शक्तिं मे देहि वासव ।

अमोघां शत्रुसङ्घानां घातनीं पृतनामुखे ॥ 33॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा मुहूर्तमिव वासवः ।

शक्त्यर्थं पृथिवीपाल कर्णं वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥ 34॥

कुण्डले मे प्रयच्छस्व वर्म चैव शरीरजम् ।

गृहाण कर्ण शक्तिं त्वमनेन समयेन मे ॥ 35॥

अमोघा हन्ति शतशः शत्रून्मम करच्युता ।

पुनश्च पाणिमभ्येति मम दैत्यान्विनिघ्नतः ॥ 36॥

सेयं तव करं प्राप्य हत्वैकं रिपुमूर्जितम् ।

गर्जन्तं प्रतपन्तं च मामेवैष्यति सूतज ॥ 37॥

कर्ण उवाच॥

एकमेवाहमिच्छामि रिपुं हन्तुं महाहवे ।

गर्जन्तं प्रतपन्तं च यतो मम भयं भवेत् ॥ 38॥

इन्द्र उवाच॥

एकं हनिष्यसि रिपुं गर्जन्तं बलिनं रणे ।

कर्ण उवाच॥

एवमप्यस्तु भगवन्नेकवीरवधे मम ।

अमोघा प्रवरा शक्तिर्येन हन्यां प्रतापिनम् ॥ 39॥

उत्कृत्य तु प्रदास्यामि कुण्डले कवचं च ते ।

निकृत्तेषु च गात्रेषु न मे बीभत्सता भवेत् ॥ 40॥

इन्द्र उवाच॥

न ते बीभत्सता कर्ण भविष्यति कथञ्चन ।

व्रणश्चापि न गात्रेषु यस्त्वं नानृतमिच्छसि ॥ 41॥

यादृशस्ते पितुर्वर्णस्तेजश्च वदतां वर ।

तादृशेनैव वर्णेन त्वं कर्ण भविता पुनः ॥ 42॥

विद्यमानेषु शस्त्रेषु यद्यमोघामसंशये ।

प्रमत्तो मोक्ष्यसे चापि त्वय्येवैषा पतिष्यति ॥ 43॥

कर्ण उवाच॥

संशयं परमं प्राप्य विमोक्ष्ये वासवीमिमाम् ।

यथा मामात्थ शक्र त्वं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ 44॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः शक्तिं प्रज्वलितां प्रतिगृह्य विशां पते ।

शस्त्रं गृहीत्वा निशितं सर्वगात्राण्यकृन्तत ॥ 45॥

ततो देवा मानवा दानवाश्च; निकृन्तन्तं कर्णमात्मानमेवम् ।

दृष्ट्वा सर्वे सिद्धसङ्घाश्च नेदु;र्न ह्यस्यासीद्दुःखजो वै विकारः ॥ 46॥

ततो दिव्या दुन्दुभयः प्रणेदुः; पपातोच्चैः पुष्पवर्षं च दिव्यम् ।

दृष्ट्वा कर्णं शस्त्रसङ्कृत्तगात्रं; मुहुश्चापि स्मयमानं नृवीरम् ॥ 47॥

ततश्छित्त्वा कवचं दिव्यमङ्गा;त्तथैवार्द्रं प्रददौ वासवाय ।

तथोत्कृत्य प्रददौ कुण्डले ते; वैकर्तनः कर्मणा तेन कर्णः ॥ 48॥

Vaisampayana said, "O great king, upon realizing the intentions of the celestial chief regarding Karna's earrings, the radiant Surya approached Karna. While that hero, devoted to the Brahmans and known for his honesty, was comfortably resting at night on a luxurious bed, the shining deity, filled with love for his son, appeared to him in a dream. Taking the form of a handsome Brahman skilled in the Vedas through his ascetic power, Surya gently spoke to Karna for his welfare, 'O son, listen to my words, O you who are known for your truthfulness! Today, out of affection, I share what is for your ultimate benefit! To get your earrings, Sakra, wishing to help the Pandavas, will come to you disguised as a Brahman. When he asks you for the earrings, do not give them up, but respond to him with kind words as best you can.' 

The Brahman then said, 'O son, I am Surya! Out of love, I guide you! Follow my advice, as it is for your great good!' Karna replied, 'If Sakra comes to me, disguised as a Brahman, seeking for the benefit of the Pandavas, I will give him the earrings and the fine armour so that my reputation across the three worlds remains intact! It is not right for people like us to protect our lives through disgraceful acts. Rather, it is better to face death with honour and in a manner that brings us glory.'’

Surya said, 'My son, if you intend to give your earrings to the wielder of the thunderbolt, strong warrior, you should also speak to him to secure victory, saying, 'O you who have performed a hundred sacrifices, I will give you these earrings on one condition.' With the earrings, you cannot be killed by any being. This is why, my son, your enemies desire to strip you of them—to see you defeated by Arjuna, the destroyer of the Danavas. Constantly honour the lord of the gods, Purandara, who wields unbreakable weapons, and ask him, saying, 'Grant me an unstoppable weapon that can vanquish all foes, and I will give you the earrings along with my fine armour!' You should offer the earrings to Sakra only under this condition. With that weapon, Karna, you will emerge victorious in battle. 

When, O greatest of kings, Karna would rise from the waters at noon to worship the radiant Surya with folded hands, the Brahmanas would approach him for gifts. At that time, he would give anything to the twice-born. Then, Indra, disguised as a Brahmana, approached him and said, 'Please give me!' And Radha's son replied, 'You are welcome!"

Vaisampayana said, "When Indra appeared disguised as a Brahman, Kama welcomed him and, unaware of his true intentions, asked, 'What would you like? A gold necklace, lovely maidens, or prosperous villages with herds of cattle?' The Brahmana replied, 'I don’t want your gold necklace, beautiful maidens, or anything else nice. Give those to those who ask for such things. If you are truly committed to your vow, then you should remove this armor you’ve always worn and the earrings you have, and give them to me! That single gift would be worth more than anything else!' Upon hearing this, Kama said, 'I will give you land, beautiful maidens, cattle, and fields; but I cannot give you my armor and earrings!'" 

Vaisampayana continued, "When the great slayer of Paka refused to ask for another boon, Kama smiled and said, 'O god among gods, I recognized you long ago, Sakra. It wouldn’t be right for me to grant you something worthless, since you are the lord of the divine! Rather, considering you are the Creator and master of all things, you should be granting boons to me! If I give you my armour and earrings, I will surely face ruin, and you will be ridiculed! So, O Sakra, I’ll trade you my earrings and fine armour for something you grant me in return! Otherwise, I won’t give them to you!' To which Sakra replied, 'Even before I came to you, Surya knew my purpose, and undoubtedly, he has revealed everything to you! O Karna, as you wish! O son, besides my thunderbolt, tell me what you would like'!' 

Vaisampayana continued, "After hearing Indra's words, Karna was filled with joy, realizing his goal was within reach. He approached Vasava, eager to obtain an unstoppable dart. He said to Indra, 'O Vasava, in exchange for my armour and earrings, grant me a weapon that cannot miss and can annihilate my enemies in battle!' Then, O ruler of the earth, after contemplating the dart, Vasava replied to Karna, 'If you give me your earrings and the armour you were born with, I will give you this weapon. However, it will only slay a single powerful enemy of yours. After achieving this, it will return to me with a roar!' 

Karna responded, 'I want to defeat even one fierce enemy, who roars and burns with anger, someone I'm afraid of!' To this, Indra affirmed, 'You will slay such a foe in battle.' Karna then asked, 'Even so, esteemed one, grant me the weapon that will only defeat one powerful enemy! I will give you my armour and earrings, cutting them from my body. But please ensure my body remains unblemished!' Upon hearing this, Indra promised, 'Since you, O Karna, are dedicated to honesty, your body will remain flawless, with no scars left behind. You will possess the complexion and vigour of your father himself. Should you throw this dart in a rage, while other weapons are still with you, and with your life not in immediate danger, it will fall upon you instead.' Karna replied, 'As you guide me, O Sakra, I will only use this Vasavi weapon when I am truly in danger! I swear this to you!" 

Vaisampayana continued, "Then, O king, Karna, taking the blazing dart, started to peel off his natural armour. Seeing him cut into his own flesh, celestial beings, humans, and demons roared like lions. Karna showed no sign of pain as he removed his armour. Observing this hero of men harm himself with a weapon, yet smiling from time to time, celestial drums began to beat, and heavenly flowers rained down on him. After removing his fine armor, he handed it to Indra, still wet with blood. He also cut off his earrings and gave those to Indra as well. This is why he came to be known as Karna.".
