वासुदेव उवाच॥ उपपन्नमिदं वाक्यं सोमकानां धुरन्धरे । अर्थसिद्धिकरं राज्ञः पाण्डवस्य महौजसः ॥ 1॥ एतच्च पूर्वकार्यं नः सुनीतमभिकाङ्क्षताम् । अन्यथा ह्याचरन्कर्म पुरुषः स्यात्सुबालिशः ॥ 2॥ किं तु सम्बन्धकं तुल्यमस्माकं कुरुपाण्डुषु । यथेष्टं वर्तमानेषु पाण्डवेषु च तेषु च ॥ 3॥ ते विवाहार्थमानीता वयं सर्वे यथा भवान् । कृते विवाहे मुदिता गमिष्यामो गृहान्प्रति ॥ 4॥ भवान्वृद्धतमो राज्ञां वयसा च श्रुतेन च । शिष्यवत्ते वयं सर्वे भवामेह न संशयः ॥ 5॥ भवन्तं धृतराष्ट्रश्च सततं बहु मन्यते । आचार्ययोः सखा चासि द्रोणस्य च कृपस्य च ॥ 6॥ स भवान्प्रेषयत्वद्य पाण्डवार्थकरं वचः । सर्वेषां निश्चितं तन्नः प्रेषयिष्यति यद्भवान् ॥ 7॥ यदि तावच्छमं कुर्यान्न्यायेन कुरुपुङ्गवः । न भवेत्कुरुपाण्डूनां सौभ्रात्रेण महान्क्षयः ॥ 8॥ अथ दर्पान्वितो मोहान्न कुर्याद्धृतराष्ट्रजः । अन्येषां प्रेषयित्वा च पश्चादस्मान्समाह्वयेः ॥ 9॥ ततो दुर्योधनो मन्दः सहामात्यः सबान्धवः । निष्ठामापत्स्यते मूढः क्रुद्धे गाण्डीवधन्वनि ॥ 10॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततः सत्कृत्य वार्ष्णेयं विराटः पृथिवीपतिः । गृहान्प्रस्थापयामास सगणं सहबान्धवम् ॥ 11॥ द्वारकां तु गते कृष्णे युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः । चक्रुः साङ्ग्रामिकं सर्वं विराटश्च महीपतिः ॥ 12॥ ततः सम्प्रेषयामास विराटः सह बान्धवैः । सर्वेषां भूमिपालानां द्रुपदश्च महीपतिः ॥ 13॥ वचनात्कुरुसिंहानां मत्स्यपाञ्चालयोश्च ते । समाजग्मुर्महीपालाः सम्प्रहृष्टा महाबलाः ॥ 14॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा पाण्डुपुत्राणां समागच्छन्महद्बलम् । धृतराष्ट्रसुतश्चापि समानिन्ये महीपतीन् ॥ 15॥ समाकुला मही राजन्कुरुपाण्डवकारणात् । तदा समभवत्कृत्स्ना सम्प्रयाणे महीक्षिताम् ॥ 16॥ बलानि तेषां वीराणामागच्छन्ति ततस्ततः । चालयन्तीव गां देवीं सपर्वतवनामिमाम् ॥ 17॥ ततः प्रज्ञावयोवृद्धं पाञ्चाल्यः स्वपुरोहितम् । कुरुभ्यः प्रेषयामास युधिष्ठिरमते तदा ॥ 18॥ |

" Krishna said, 'These worlds belong to the leader of the Somaka tribe and should serve the interests of Pandu's incredibly strong son. Since we aim to act wisely, this should be our top priority; anyone who does otherwise is foolish. Our bonds with both the Kurus and the Pandus are equal, regardless of how these two sides treat one another. You and we are gathered here for a wedding, which has now taken place, so let's return home content. You are the greatest of kings, both in age and knowledge, and we all look up to you as if you are our teacher. Dhritarashtra has always held you in high regard, and you are also a friend to the wise mentors Drona and Kripa. Therefore, I urge you to send a message to the Kurus on behalf of the Pandavas. We are all united in wanting you to do this. If that leader of the Kuru clan agrees to just terms for peace, the brotherly bonds between the Kuras and Pandus will remain intact. But if the son of Dhritarashtra grows arrogant and foolishly rejects peace, then gather others and call on us as well. The bearer of Gandiva will be filled with anger, and the foolish and evil Duryodhana, along with his allies and friends, will face their doom.' Vaisampayana said, 'King Virata honoured Krishna, sending him home with his followers and family. Once Krishna left for Dwaraka, Yudhishthira and his companions, along with King Virata, began preparing for battle. Virata and his kin instructed all the kings, and King Drupada did the same. At the request of the noble Kuru clan, as well as the two kings of the Matsyas and the Panchalas, many powerful lords of the land arrived happily. When the sons of Dhritarashtra learned that the Pandavas had gathered a vast army, they, too, summoned numerous rulers. At that moment, the entire land was filled with rulers marching to support either the Kurus or the Pandavas, and military forces from all sides began to converge. The earth seemed to tremble beneath the weight of armies with her mountains and forests shaking. The king of the Panchalas, after considering Yudhishthira's wishes, sent his own aged priest to the Kurus to discuss matters.' |

द्रुपद उवाच॥ भूतानां प्राणिनः श्रेष्ठाः प्राणिनां बुद्धिजीविनः । बुद्धिमत्सु नराः श्रेष्ठा नराणां तु द्विजातयः ॥ 1॥ द्विजेषु वैद्याः श्रेयांसो वैद्येषु कृतबुद्धयः । स भवान्कृतबुद्धीनां प्रधान इति मे मतिः ॥ 2॥ कुलेन च विशिष्टोऽसि वयसा च श्रुतेन च । प्रज्ञयानवमश्चासि शुक्रेणाङ्गिरसेन च ॥ 3॥ विदितं चापि ते सर्वं यथावृत्तः स कौरवः । पाण्डवश्च यथावृत्तः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥ 4॥ धृतराष्ट्रस्य विदिते वञ्चिताः पाण्डवाः परैः । विदुरेणानुनीतोऽपि पुत्रमेवानुवर्तते ॥ 5॥ शकुनिर्बुद्धिपूर्वं हि कुन्तीपुत्रं समाह्वयत् । अनक्षज्ञं मताक्षः सन्क्षत्रवृत्ते स्थितं शुचिम् ॥ 6॥ ते तथा वञ्चयित्वा तु धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् । न कस्याञ्चिदवस्थायां राज्यं दास्यन्ति वै स्वयम् ॥ 7॥ भवांस्तु धर्मसंयुक्तं धृतराष्ट्रं ब्रुवन्वचः । मनांसि तस्य योधानां ध्रुवमावर्तयिष्यति ॥ 8॥ विदुरश्चापि तद्वाक्यं साधयिष्यति तावकम् । भीष्मद्रोणकृपाणां च भेदं सञ्जनयिष्यति ॥ 9॥ अमात्येषु च भिन्नेषु योधेषु विमुखेषु च । पुनरेकाग्रकरणं तेषां कर्म भविष्यति ॥ 10॥ एतस्मिन्नन्तरे पार्थाः सुखमेकाग्रबुद्धयः । सेनाकर्म करिष्यन्ति द्रव्याणां चैव सञ्चयम् ॥ 11॥ भिद्यमानेषु च स्वेषु लम्बमाने च वै त्वयि । न तथा ते करिष्यन्ति सेनाकर्म न संशयः ॥ 12॥ एतत्प्रयोजनं चात्र प्राधान्येनोपलभ्यते । सङ्गत्या धृतराष्ट्रश्च कुर्याद्धर्म्यं वचस्तव ॥ 13॥ स भवान्धर्मयुक्तश्च धर्म्यं तेषु समाचरन् । कृपालुषु परिक्लेशान्पाण्डवानां प्रकीर्तयन् ॥ 14॥ वृद्धेषु कुलधर्मं च ब्रुवन्पूर्वैरनुष्ठितम् । विभेत्स्यति मनांस्येषामिति मे नात्र संशयः ॥ 15॥ न च तेभ्यो भयं तेऽस्ति ब्राह्मणो ह्यसि वेदवित् । दूतकर्मणि युक्तश्च स्थविरश्च विशेषतः ॥ 16॥ स भवान्पुष्ययोगेन मुहूर्तेन जयेन च । कौरवेयान्प्रयात्वाशु कौन्तेयस्यार्थसिद्धये ॥ 17॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ तथानुशिष्टः प्रययौ द्रुपदेन महात्मना । पुरोधा वृत्तसम्पन्नो नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥ 18। |

Drupada said, 'Among all beings, those with life hold the highest place. Among living beings, those with intelligence are the most esteemed. Among intelligent creatures, humans are the most superior. Among humans, the twice-born, or those with higher birth, are the esteemed ones. Among the twice-born, the students of the Veda are the superior ones. Among the Veda students, those with cultured understanding stand out. Among cultured individuals, those who are practically wise take the lead. Ultimately, among the practical, those who know the Supreme Being are the greatest. You, in my eyes, are at the pinnacle of cultured understanding. You are notable for both your experience and learning. Your intellect matches that of Sukra or Vrihaspati, the son of Angiras. You understand the nature of the Kuru leader and also the nature of Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti. Under Dhritarashtra’s watch, the Pandavas were deceived by their adversaries. Even though Vidura guided him, he still chooses to follow his son! Shakuni deliberately challenged Yudhishthira to a game of chance, knowing the latter was inexperienced while he himself was a master at it. Yudhishthira, honest and true to the rules of honor, was an easy target for their deception. Having cheated the honourable Yudhishthira, they will never willingly relinquish the kingdom. If you speak words of justice to Dhritarashtra, you will surely win the allegiance of his soldiers. Vidura will use your words to sway the loyalty of Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others. When state officials are disloyal and soldiers lose their spirit, the enemy’s challenge is to win them back. Meanwhile, the Pandavas will focus wholeheartedly on preparing their army and gathering supplies. When the enemy’s supporters become divided, and as you linger among them, they will be unable to prepare properly for battle. This seems like a wise approach. When you meet Dhritarashtra, he might just listen to you. Since you are a person of integrity, you should behave accordingly towards them. You must speak to the compassionate ones about the many struggles the Pandavas have faced. Also, you should remind the elders of their ancestors’ traditions to sway their hearts. I have no doubt about this. You need not fear any harm from them, for you are a Brahmana, knowledgeable in the Vedas; you go as an envoy, and being an elder adds to your credibility. Therefore, I urge you to head to the Kauravas immediately to advocate for the Pandavas, choosing the timing that aligns with the Pushya astrological combination and at the favoured moment of day known as Jaya." 'Vaisampayana continued, 'Following the wise counsel of Drupada, the honourable priest departed for Hastinapura.' |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ गते द्वारवतीं कृष्णे बलदेवे च माधवे । सह वृष्ण्यन्धकैः सर्वैर्भोजैश्च शतशस्तथा ॥ 1॥ सर्वमागमयामास पाण्डवानां विचेष्टितम् । धृतराष्ट्रात्मजो राजा दूतैः प्रणिहितैश्चरैः ॥ 2॥ स श्रुत्वा माधवं यातं सदश्वैरनिलोपमैः । बलेन नातिमहता द्वारकामभ्ययात्पुरीम् ॥ 3॥ तमेव दिवसं चापि कौन्तेयः पाण्डुनन्दनः । आनर्तनगरीं रम्यां जगामाशु धनञ्जयः ॥ 4॥ तौ यात्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रौ द्वारकां कुरुनन्दनौ । सुप्तं ददृशतुः कृष्णं शयानं चोपजग्मतुः ॥ 5॥ ततः शयाने गोविन्दे प्रविवेश सुयोधनः । उच्छीर्षतश्च कृष्णस्य निषसाद वरासने ॥ 6॥ ततः किरीटी तस्यानु प्रविवेश महामनाः । पश्चार्धे च स कृष्णस्य प्रह्वोऽतिष्ठत्कृताञ्जलिः ॥ 7॥ प्रतिबुद्धः स वार्ष्णेयो ददर्शाग्रे किरीटिनम् । स तयोः स्वागतं कृत्वा यथार्हं प्रतिपूज्य च ॥ 8॥ तदागमनजं हेतुं पप्रच्छ मधुसूदनः ॥ ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णमुवाच प्रहसन्निव । विग्रहेऽस्मिन्भवान्साह्यं मम दातुमिहार्हति ॥ 9॥ समं हि भवतः सख्यं मयि चैवार्जुनेऽपि च । तथा सम्बन्धकं तुल्यमस्माकं त्वयि माधव ॥ 10॥ अहं चाभिगतः पूर्वं त्वामद्य मधुसूदन । पूर्वं चाभिगतं सन्तो भजन्ते पूर्वसारिणः ॥ 11॥ त्वं च श्रेष्ठतमो लोके सतामद्य जनार्दन । सततं संमतश्चैव सद्वृत्तमनुपालय ॥ 12॥ कृष्ण उवाच॥ भवानभिगतः पूर्वमत्र मे नास्ति संशयः । दृष्टस्तु प्रथमं राजन्मया पार्थो धनञ्जयः ॥ 13॥ तव पूर्वाभिगमनात्पूर्वं चाप्यस्य दर्शनात् । साहाय्यमुभयोरेव करिष्यामि सुयोधन ॥ 14॥ प्रवारणं तु बालानां पूर्वं कार्यमिति श्रुतिः । तस्मात्प्रवारणं पूर्वमर्हः पार्थो धनञ्जयः ॥ 15॥ मत्संहननतुल्यानां गोपानामर्बुदं महत् । नारायणा इति ख्याताः सर्वे सङ्ग्रामयोधिनः ॥ 16॥ ते वा युधि दुराधर्षा भवन्त्वेकस्य सैनिकाः । अयुध्यमानः सङ्ग्रामे न्यस्तशस्त्रोऽहमेकतः ॥ 17॥ आभ्यामन्यतरं पार्थ यत्ते हृद्यतरं मतम् । तद्वृणीतां भवानग्रे प्रवार्यस्त्वं हि धर्मतः ॥ 18॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ एवमुक्तस्तु कृष्णेन कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः । अयुध्यमानं सङ्ग्रामे वरयामास केशवम् ॥ 19॥ सहस्राणां सहस्रं तु योधानां प्राप्य भारत । कृष्णं चापहृतं ज्ञात्वा सम्प्राप परमां मुदम् ॥ 20॥ दुर्योधनस्तु तत्सैन्यं सर्वमादाय पार्थिवः । ततोऽभ्ययाद्भीमबलो रौहिणेयं महाबलम् ॥ 21॥ सर्वं चागमने हेतुं स तस्मै संन्यवेदयत् । प्रत्युवाच ततः शौरिर्धार्तराष्ट्रमिदं वचः ॥ 2॥ विदितं ते नरव्याघ्र सर्वं भवितुमर्हति । यन्मयोक्तं विराटस्य पुरा वैवाहिके तदा ॥ 23॥ निगृह्योक्तो हृषीकेशस्त्वदर्थं कुरुनन्दन । मया सम्बन्धकं तुल्यमिति राजन्पुनः पुनः ॥ 24॥ न च तद्वाक्यमुक्तं वै केशवः प्रत्यपद्यत । न चाहमुत्सहे कृष्णं विना स्थातुमपि क्षणम् ॥ 25॥ नाहं सहायः पार्थानां नापि दुर्योधनस्य वै । इति मे निश्चिता बुद्दिर्वासुदेवमवेक्ष्य ह ॥ 26॥ जातोऽसि भारते वंशे सर्वपार्थिवपूजिते । गच्छ युध्यस्व धर्मेण क्षात्रेण भरतर्षभ ॥ 27॥ इत्येवमुक्तः स तदा परिष्वज्य हलायुधम् । कृष्णं चापहृतं ज्ञात्वा युद्धान्मेने जितं जयम् ॥ 28॥ सोऽभ्ययात्कृतवर्माणं धृतराष्ट्रसुतो नृपः । कृतवर्मा ददौ तस्य सेनामक्षौहिणीं तदा ॥ 29॥ स तेन सर्वसैन्येन भीमेन कुरुनन्दनः । वृतः प्रतिययौ हृष्टः सुहृदः सम्प्रहर्षयन् ॥ 30॥ गते दुर्योधने कृष्णः किरीटिनमथाब्रवीत् । अयुध्यमानः कां बुद्धिमास्थायाहं त्वया वृतः ॥ 31॥ अर्जुन उवाच॥ भवान्समर्थस्तान्सर्वान्निहन्तुं नात्र संशयः । निहन्तुमहमप्येकः समर्थः पुरुषोत्तम ॥ 32॥ भवांस्तु कीर्तिमाँल्लोके तद्यशस्त्वां गमिष्यति । यशसा चाहमप्यर्थी तस्मादसि मया वृतः ॥ 33॥ सारथ्यं तु त्वया कार्यमिति मे मानसं सदा । चिररात्रेप्सितं कामं तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥ 34॥ वासुदेव उवाच॥ उपपन्नमिदं पार्थ यत्स्पर्धेथा मया सह । सारथ्यं ते करिष्यामि कामः सम्पद्यतां तव ॥ 35॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ एवं प्रमुदितः पार्थः कृष्णेन सहितस्तदा । वृतो दाशार्हप्रवरैः पुनरायाद्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 36॥ |

"Vaisampayana said, 'After sending the priest to the city named after the elephant, they dispatched messengers to kings from various lands. The great Kuru warrior Dhananjaya, son of Kunti, then set off for Dwaraka. Meanwhile, Krishna and Baladeva, descendants of Madhu, left for Dwaraka along with many Vrishnis, Andhakas, and Bhojas. The royal son of Dhritarashtra secretly gathered information about the Pandavas' activities through his spies. When he learned that Krishna was on his way, he quickly travelled to Dwaraka with a small contingent of swift horses. On the same day, Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti and Pandu, arrived at the beautiful city of Anarta. The two noble sons of the Kuru lineage, fierce like tigers, approached Krishna as he lay asleep. Duryodhana entered first, taking his seat at the head of the bed, followed by the noble Arjuna, who stood respectfully at the back, hands clasped in greeting. When Krishna awoke, he first noticed Arjuna. After ensuring their safe travels and exchanging greetings, he asked them about the purpose of their visit. Duryodhana, with a bright smile, said to Krishna, 'I need your support in the upcoming war. Both Arjuna and I are your loyal friends.'. O descendant of Madhu, you share a bond with both of us. Today, O slayer of Madhu, I am the first to approach you. Those with good judgment support the one who comes to them first; that's how the ancients acted. O Krishna, you are the pinnacle of all whose minds are just, and you are always held in high regard. I urge you to adhere to the principles upheld by the just. Krishna then replied, 'I have no doubt, O king, that you were the first to arrive. However, I first laid eyes on Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti. Because you came first and I saw Arjuna before you, I will certainly help both of you, O Suyodhana. But it is said that younger individuals should be given the first choice. Thus, Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti, has the right to choose first. There are ten lakh skilled cowherds known as the Narayanas, powerful in battle and ready to fight. One of you will receive these fierce soldiers while I will choose not to fight and set down my arms to go with the other. O son of Kunti, you may choose whichever option suits you best, for according to the rules, that choice is yours first.' "Vaisampayana went on, 'After Krishna spoke, Dhananjaya, Kunti's son, chose Kesava, who would not battle on the field, even Narayana himself, the destroyer of enemies, eternal and born among men at his own will—the greatest of all Kshatriyas and above all the gods and Danavas. Duryodhana, on the other hand, gathered that entire army (made up of the Narayanas). And, O descendant of Bharata, having acquired those troops, countless in number, he felt immense joy, despite knowing that Krishna was not on his side. With that powerful army secured, Duryodhana approached Balarama and explained his purpose. Balarama responded to Dhritarashtra's son, 'Remember, O mighty one, all I said at Vitrata's wedding. To honour you, I challenged Krishna and opposed his views. I emphasized that our ties to both sides are equal. However, Krishna did not accept my words; I cannot go against him for even a moment. Thus, I’ve resolved not to fight for Kunti's sons or for you. And, O esteemed Bharata, born into a race respected by kings, go and engage in battle according to proper conduct.' "Vaisampayana continued, 'After Duryodhana spoke, he embraced that hero who wielded a plow as his weapon. Even though he knew Krishna was no longer beside him, he viewed Arjuna as already defeated. The royal son of Dhritarashtra then approached Kritavarman, who provided him with an army consisting of an Akshauhini. Surrounded by this formidable military force, Duryodhana marched forth, bringing joy to his allies. After Duryodhana left, Krishna, the Creator of the universe, dressed in yellow, spoke to Arjuna, saying, 'Why have you chosen me, who will not fight at all?' 'Arjuna replied, 'I know you can defeat them all, as I can as well, O greatest of warriors. But your fame is unmatched, and that glory will follow you. I seek fame too, which is why I chose you. I have always wished for you to be my charioteer, so I ask you to fulfil this long-held desire.' 'Vasudeva's son then replied, 'It suits you well, O son of Kunti, to challenge me. I will be your charioteer; let your wish be granted.' 'Vaisampayana continued, 'With joy in his heart, Kunti's son, along with Krishna and the finest of the Dasarha lineage, returned to Yudhishthira.'.' |
