भीष्म उवाच॥ एते रथास्ते सङ्ख्यातास्तथैवातिरथा नृप । य चाप्यर्धरथा राजन्पाण्डवानामतः शृणु ॥ 1॥ यदि कौतूहलं तेऽद्य पाण्डवानां बले नृप । रथसङ्ख्यां महाबाहो सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥ 2॥ स्वयं राजा रथोदारः पाण्डवः कुन्तिनन्दनः । अग्निवत्समरे तात चरिष्यति न संशयः ॥ 3॥ भीमसेनस्तु राजेन्द्र रथोऽष्टगुणसंमितः । नागायुतबलो मानी तेजसा न स मानुषः ॥ 4॥ माद्रीपुत्रौ तु रथिनौ द्वावेव पुरुषर्षभौ । अश्विनाविव रूपेण तेजसा च समन्वितौ ॥ 5॥ सर्व एव महात्मानः शालस्कन्धा इवोद्गताः । प्रादेशेनाधिकाः पुम्भिरन्यैस्ते च प्रमाणतः ॥ 6॥ सिंहसंहननाः सर्वे पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः । चरितब्रह्मचर्याश्च सर्वे चातितपस्विनः ॥ 7॥ एकैकशस्ते सङ्ग्रामे हन्युः सर्वान्महीक्षितः । प्रत्यक्षं तव राजेन्द्र राजसूये यथाभवत् ॥ 8॥ द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं द्यूते च परुषा गिरः । ते संस्मरन्तः सङ्ग्रामे विचरिष्यन्ति कालवत् ॥ 9॥ लोहिताक्षो गुडाकेशो नारायणसहायवान् । उभयोः सेनयोर्वीर रथो नास्तीह तादृशः ॥ 10॥ भूतोऽथ वा भविष्यो वा रथः कश्चिन्मया श्रुतः । समायुक्तो महाराज यथा पार्थस्य धीमतः ॥ 11॥ वासुदेवश्च संयन्ता योद्धा चैव धनञ्जयः । गाण्डीवं च धनुर्दिव्यं ते चाश्वा वातरंहसः ॥ 12॥ अभेद्यं कवचं दिव्यमक्षय्यौ च महेषुधी । एष हन्याद्धि संरम्भी बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।13 तव सेनां महाबाहुः स्वां चैव परिपालयन् ॥ अहं चैनं प्रत्युदियामाचार्यो वा धनञ्जयम् । 14 न तृतीयोऽस्ति राजेन्द्र सेनयोरुभयोरपि ॥ य एनं शरवर्षाणि वर्षन्तमुदियाद्रथी ॥ 15॥ जीमूत इव घर्मान्ते महावातसमीरितः । समायुक्तस्तु कौन्तेयो वासुदेवसहायवान् ॥ तरुणश्च कृती चैव जीर्णावावामुभावपि ॥ 16॥ द्रौपदेया महाराज सर्वे पञ्च महारथाः । वैराटिरुत्तरश्चैव रथो मम महान्मतः ॥ 17॥ अभिमन्युर्महाराज रथयूथपयूथपः । समः पार्थेन समरे वासुदेवेन वा भवेत् ॥ 18॥ लघ्वस्त्रश्चित्रयोधी च मनस्वी दृढविक्रमः । संस्मरन्वै परिक्लेशं स्वपितुर्विक्रमिष्यति ॥ 19॥ सात्यकिर्माधवः शूरो रथयूथपयूथपः । एष वृष्णिप्रवीराणाममर्षी जितसाध्वसः ॥ 20॥ उत्तमौजास्तथा राजन्रथो मम महान्मतः । युधामन्युश्च विक्रान्तो रथोदारो नरर्षभः ॥ 21॥ अजेयौ समरे वृद्धौ विराटद्रुपदावुभौ । महारथौ महावीर्यौ मतौ मे पुरुषर्षभौ ॥ 22॥ वयोवृद्धावपि तु तौ क्षत्रधर्मपरायणौ । यतिष्येते परं शक्त्या स्थितौ वीरगते पथि ॥ 23॥ लोकवीरौ महेष्वासौ त्यक्तात्मानौ च भारत । प्रत्ययं परिरक्षन्तौ महत्कर्म करिष्यतः ॥ 24॥ |

Bhishma said, 'Now, O king, I've pointed out your charioteers and the great warriors among them. Pay attention now to the story of the charioteers and the great warriors on the side of the Pandavas. If you're curious, listen along with these kings to the story of their charioteers in battle. King Yudhisthira is a formidable charioteer, surely, he will move through the battlefield like a raging fire. Bhimasena, O king, is considered equal to eight charioteers. In combat with a mace or arrows, none can match him. With the strength of ten thousand elephants and filled with pride, his energy is beyond that of ordinary men. Those two mighty sons of Madri are also charioteers, as beautiful as the divine twins, and they possess great vigour. Leading their divisions, they remember their trials and roam the battlefield like numerous Indras! All of them are noble and towering like Sala trees. Each of the sons of Pandu stands half a cubit taller than other men, possessing the bravery of lions and exceptional strength. They have all upheld the Brahmacharya vows and other forms of ascetic discipline. Endowed with humility, these men are fierce like true tigers. Each one has the power to defeat all the kings of the earth! The events that transpired during the Rajasuya sacrifice occurred right before your eyes! Remembering Draupadi's sufferings and the harsh words after their defeat in the dice game, they will charge into battle like fearsome Rudras.' When it comes to Arjuna, with Krishna as his ally, there is no brave charioteer in either army who can match him. Not even among gods, demons, serpents, giants, or spirits, has there ever been or will there ever be a charioteer like him! O great king, wise Partha drives a chariot with a banner depicting a monkey; the driver is Vasudeva! Dhananjaya himself is the warrior fighting from it, armed with the divine bow Gandiva, and he has horses as swift as the wind. His armour is impenetrable and divine, and his two quivers are never empty. Fuelled by rage and unmatched in strength, this mighty warrior will surely defeat your troops while protecting his own! Only Drona and I, among both armies, can oppose Dhananjaya, the one who showers arrows like rain during a storm, when Vasudeva stands by his side for battle! He is skilled and young, while we are both old and weary!' "Bhishma said,
· 'All five of Draupadi's sons, O king, are great warriors. Virata's son Uttara is, in my opinion, among the top charioteers. · The strong Abhimanyu leads the leaders in chariot battles. Truly, this enemy-slayer is as fierce in combat as Arjuna or Krishna himself. He is skilled in archery and knows all forms of warfare, full of energy, and steadfast in his commitments. Remembering the struggles of his father, he will show his strength. · The valiant Satyaki from the Madhu lineage is also a top commander of chariots. Among the heroes of the Vrishni clan, he is filled with fierce anger and is completely fearless. · Uttamaujas, too, O king, is an excellent chariot warrior in my view. Similarly, Yudhamanyu, full of strength, is also a remarkable car-warrior.
Both the mighty veterans, old Virata and Drupada, renowned for their skills, are indeed great champions. Despite their age, they remain committed to the values of the Kshatriyas. These formidable archers, disregarding their own lives, will lead their respective troops to perform great deeds, fulfilling the trust placed in them by the Pandavas.' |

भीष्म उवाच॥ पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतो राजन्परपुरञ्जयः । शिखण्डी रथमुख्यो मे मतः पार्थस्य भारत ॥ 1॥ धृष्टद्युम्नश्च सेनानीः सर्वसेनासु भारत । मतो मेऽतिरथो राजन्द्रोणशिष्यो महारथः ॥ 2॥ एष योत्स्यति सङ्ग्रामे सूदयन्वै परान्रणे । भगवानिव सङ्क्रुद्धः पिनाकी युगसङ्क्षये ॥ 3॥ क्षत्रधर्मा तु राजेन्द्र मतो मेऽर्धरथो नृप । धृष्टद्युम्नस्य तनयो बाल्यान्नातिकृतश्रमः ॥ 4॥ शिशुपालसुतो वीरश्चेदिराजो महारथः । धृष्टकेतुर्महेष्वासः सम्बन्धी पाण्डवस्य ह ॥ 5॥ क्षत्रधर्मरतो मह्यं मतः परपुरञ्जयः । क्षत्रदेवस्तु राजेन्द्र पाण्डवेषु रथोत्तमः ॥ जयन्तश्चामितौजाश्च सत्यजिच्च महारथः ॥ 6॥ महारथा महात्मानः सर्वे पाञ्चालसत्तमाः । योत्स्यन्ते समरे तात संरब्धा इव कुञ्जराः ॥ 7॥ अजो भोजश्च विक्रान्तौ पाण्डवेषु महारथौ । पाण्डवानां सहायार्थे परं शक्त्या यतिष्यतः ॥ शीघ्रास्त्रौ चित्रयोद्धारौ कृतिनौ दृढविक्रमौ ॥ 8॥ केकयाः पञ्च राजेन्द्र भ्रातरो युद्धदुर्मदाः । सर्व एते रथोदाराः सर्वे लोहितकध्वजाः ॥ 9॥ काशिकः सुकुमारश्च नीलो यश्चापरो नृपः । सूर्यदत्तश्च शङ्खश्च मदिराश्वश्च नामतः ॥ 10॥ सर्व एते रथोदाराः सर्वे चाहवलक्षणाः । सर्वास्त्रविदुषः सर्वे महात्मानो मता मम ॥ 11॥ वार्धक्षेमिर्महाराज रथो मम महान्मतः । चित्रायुधश्च नृपतिर्मतो मे रथसत्तमः ॥ 12 स हि सङ्ग्रामशोभी च भक्तश्चापि किरीटिनः ॥ चेकितानः सत्यधृतिः पाण्डवानां महारथौ । 13 द्वाविमौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ रथोदारौ मतौ मम ॥ व्याघ्रदत्तश्च राजेन्द्र चन्द्रसेनश्च भारत ।14 मतौ मम रथोदारौ पाण्डवानां न संशयः ॥ सेनाबिन्दुश्च राजेन्द्र क्रोधहन्ता च नामतः ।15 यः समो वासुदेवेन भीमसेनेन चाभिभूः ॥ स योत्स्यतीह विक्रम्य समरे तव सैनिकैः ॥ 16॥ मां द्रोणं च कृपं चैव यथा संमन्यते भवान् । तथा स समरश्लाघी मन्तव्यो रथसत्तमः ॥ 17॥ काश्यः परमशीघ्रास्त्रः श्लाघनीयो रथोत्तमः । रथ एकगुणो मह्यं मतः परपुरञ्जयः ॥ 18॥ अयं च युधि विक्रान्तो मन्तव्योऽष्टगुणो रथः । सत्यजित्समरश्लाघी द्रुपदस्यात्मजो युवा ॥ 19॥ गतः सोऽतिरथत्वं हि धृष्टद्युम्नेन संमितः । पाण्डवानां यशस्कामः परं कर्म करिष्यति ॥ 20॥ अनुरक्तश्च शूरश्च रथोऽयमपरो महान् । पाण्ड्यराजो महावीर्यः पाण्डवानां धुरन्धरः ॥ 21॥ दृढधन्वा महेष्वासः पाण्डवानां रथोत्तमः । श्रेणिमान्कौरवश्रेष्ठ वसुदानश्च पार्थिवः ॥ उभावेतावतिरथौ मतौ मम परन्तप ॥ 22॥ |

Bhishma said,
· 'That conqueror of enemy cities, Sikhandin, the son of the king of the Panchalas, is, in my view, one of Yudhishthira's greatest warriors. · Dhrishtadyumna, the leader of Yudhishthira's entire army and a mighty charioteer who is also a student of Drona, is, in my opinion, an Atiratha. · Kshattradharman, Dhrishtadyumna's son, due to his youth and lack of experience in battle, is, in my judgment, only half a Ratha. · Dhrishtaketu, the powerful archer and heroic son of Sisupala, the Chedi king, is a Maharatha and a relative of the Pandavas. · Kshattradeva, another conqueror of enemy cities, committed to the virtues of Kshatriya, is, in my sight, one of the finest Rathas among the Pandavas. · Among the brave Panchalas, Jayanta, Amitaujas, and the great charioteer Satyajit are all revered as Maharathas. They will, indeed, fight in battle with the ferocity of raging elephants.' · Aja and Bhoja, both incredibly skilled, are great warriors. Armed with immense strength, these two heroes will fight for the Pandavas. They are both agile in combat and well-versed in every form of warfare, showing remarkable skill and determination. · The five Kshatriya brothers, O king, who are nearly impossible to defeat and carry blood-red banners, are the finest of the warriors. Kasika, Sukumara, Nila, along with Suryadatta, and Sankha, known as Madiraswa, stand out as exemplary fighters. They possess all the qualities needed for battle, are well-acquainted with every weapon, and are noble at heart. · Vardhakshemi, O king, is a warrior of great renown, while King Chitrayudha is among the best of fighters, highly valued on the battlefield and deeply loyal to Arjuna, adorned with a crown. · Those powerful charioteers, true heroes among men, Chekitana and Satyadhriti, are two of the finest warriors for the Pandavas, in my view. · Vyaghradatta and Chandrasena, O monarch, are, without a doubt, two of the top warriors among the warriors of Pandavas, as I believe. · Senabindu, O king, also known as Krodhahanta, is seen as equal to Vasudeva and Bhimasena and will bravely face your warriors in battle. Truly, that great king, who constantly speaks of his victories in combat, should be honoured by you just as you honour me, Drona, and Kripa! · Kasya, the finest among men, is known for his exceptional skill with weapons. This conqueror of enemy cities is recognized as strong as one Ratha, yet truly displays the might of eight Rathas in battle. · Satyajit, son of Drupada, is young but, like Dhrishtadyumna, is an Atiratha. Aiming to elevate the Pandavas' glory, he will perform mighty deeds. Also devoted to the Pandavas, · King Pandya, a powerful archer, is another great warrior among them. · Furthermore, Dhridadhanwan, the strong archer, is another Maharatha of the Pandavas. · O conqueror of enemy cities, both Srenimant and King Vasudeva are, in my view, Atirathas |

भीष्म उवाच॥ रोचमानो महाराज पाण्डवानां महारथः । योत्स्यतेऽमरवत्सङ्ख्ये परसैन्येषु भारत ॥ 1॥ पुरुजित्कुन्तिभोजश्च महेष्वासो महाबलः । मातुलो भीमसेनस्य स च मेऽतिरथो मतः ॥ 2॥ भैमसेनिर्महाराज हैडिम्बो राक्षसेश्वरः । मतो मे बहुमायावी रथयूथपयूथपः ॥ 3॥ योत्स्यते समरे तात मायाभिः समरप्रियः । ये चास्य राक्षसाः शूराः सचिवा वशवर्तिनः ॥ 4॥ नेष्यन्ति समरे सेनां भीमां यौधिष्ठिरीं नृप । महेन्द्रेणेव वीरेण पाल्यमानां किरीटिना ॥ 5॥ तैरहं समरे वीर त्वामायद्भिर्जयैषिभिः । योत्स्यामि जयमाकाङ्क्षन्नथ वा निधनं रणे ॥ 6॥ पार्थं च वासुदेवं च चक्रगाण्डीवधारिणौ । सन्ध्यागताविवार्केन्दू समेष्ये पुरुषोत्तमौ ॥ 7॥ ये चैव ते रथोदाराः पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकाः । सहसैन्यानहं तांश्च प्रतीयां रणमूर्धनि ॥ 8॥ एते रथाश्चातिरथाश्च तुभ्यं; यथाप्रधानं नृप कीर्तिता मया । तथा राजन्नर्धरथाश्च के चि;त्तथैव तेषामपि कौरवेन्द्र ॥ 9॥ लोकस्तद्वेद यदहं पितुः प्रियचिकीर्षया । प्राप्तं राज्यं परित्यज्य ब्रह्मचर्ये धृतव्रतः ॥ 10॥ चित्राङ्गदं कौरवाणामहं राज्येऽभ्यषेचयम् । विचित्रवीर्यं च शिशुं यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयम् ॥ 11॥ देवव्रतत्वं विख्याप्य पृथिव्यां सर्वराजसु । नैव हन्यां स्त्रियं जातु न स्त्रीपूर्वं कथञ्चन ॥ 12॥ स हि स्त्रीपूर्वको राजञ्शिखण्डी यदि ते श्रुतः । कन्या भूत्वा पुमाञ्जातो न योत्स्ये तेन भारत ॥ 13॥ सर्वांस्त्वन्यान्हनिष्यामि पार्थिवान्भरतर्षभ । यान्समेष्यामि समरे न तु कुन्तीसुतान्नृप ॥ 14॥ |

Bhishma said, 'O great king, Rochamana is another great warrior of the Pandavas. He will, O Bharata, face enemy warriors in battle like a divine being. The powerful archer Purujit, son of Kuntibhoja and uncle to Bhimasena, is, in my opinion, a top-tier warrior. That prince of demons, Ghatotkacha, born of Bhima and Hidimba, is skilled in magic and, I believe, a leader among the charioteers. He loves battle and has great magical powers; he will fight fiercely, supported by his heroic demon allies. ' These and many other regional rulers will lead the fierce army of Yudhishthira, protected by that hero, Arjuna, who shines like the mighty Indra himself. It is with them, empowered and driven by the will to win, that I shall engage in this battle, ready for victory or death. 'I have now named the charioteers and elite warriors according to their rank, those half-warriors loyal to you or to them, O chief of the Kauravas! I will stand against Arjuna, Vasudeva, and any other lords of the earth who may be present, all whom I can see, O Bharata.'! But you, strong warrior, I will not attack or kill Sikhandin, the prince of Panchala, even if I see him charging at me in battle with his weapons raised. Everyone knows that to please my father, I gave up the kingdom that was rightfully mine and chose to live by the vow of Brahmacharya. I then made Chitrangada the ruler of the Kauravas, while appointing the young Vichitravirya as the heir. Announcing my noble vow to all the kings, I have sworn never to harm a woman or anyone who was once a woman. You should know, O king, that Sikhandin was born as a girl before being transformed into a man. I will not fight him, O Bharata; I will certainly battle against all other kings I meet. However, I will not be able to kill the sons of Kunti!" |
