धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥ सेनापत्यं च सम्प्राप्य कौरवाणां धुरन्धरः । किमचेष्टत गाङ्गेयो महाबुद्धिपराक्रमः ॥ 1॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततस्तत्सञ्जयस्तस्मै सर्वमेव न्यवेदयत् । यथोक्तं कुरुवृद्धेन भीष्मेणामिततेजसा ॥ 2॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ सेनापत्यमनुप्राप्य भीष्मः शान्तनवो नृप । दुर्योधनमुवाचेदं वचनं हर्षयन्निव ॥ 3॥ सेनाकर्मण्यभिज्ञोऽस्मि व्यूहेषु विविधेषु च । कर्म कारयितुं चैव भृतानप्यभृतांस्तथा ॥ 4॥ यात्रायानेषु युद्धेषु लब्धप्रशमनेषु च । भृशं वेद महाराज यथा वेद बृहस्पतिः ॥ 5॥ सोऽहं योत्स्यामि तत्त्वेन पालयंस्तव वाहिनीम् । यथावच्छास्त्रतो राजन्व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥ 6॥ दुर्योधन उवाच॥ न विद्यते मे गाङ्गेय भयं देवासुरेष्वपि । समस्तेषु महाबाहो सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ 7॥ किं पुनस्त्वयि दुर्धर्षे सेनापत्ये व्यवस्थिते । द्रोणे च पुरुषव्याघ्रे स्थिते युद्धाभिनन्दिनि ॥ 8॥ भवद्भ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां स्थिताभ्यां विजयो मम । न दुर्लभं कुरुश्रेष्ठ देवराज्यमपि ध्रुवम् ॥ 9॥ रथसङ्ख्यां तु कार्त्स्न्येन परेषामात्मनस्तथा । तथैवातिरथानां च वेत्तुमिच्छामि कौरव ॥ 10॥ पितामहो हि कुशलः परेषामात्मनस्तथा । श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं सर्वैः सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥ 11॥ भीष्म उवाच॥ गान्धारे शृणु राजेन्द्र रथसङ्ख्यां स्वके बले । ये रथाः पृथिवीपाल तथैवातिरथाश्च ये ॥ 12॥ भवानग्रे रथोदारः सह सर्वैः सहोदरैः । दुःशासनप्रभृतिभिर्भ्रातृभिः शतसंमितैः ॥ 13॥ सर्वे कृतप्रहरणाश्छेद्यभेद्यविशारदाः । रथोपस्थे गजस्कन्धे गदायुद्धेऽसिचर्मणि ॥ 14॥ न त्वात्मनो गुणान्वक्तुमर्हामि विदितोऽस्मि ते ॥ कृतवर्मा त्वतिरथो भोजः प्रहरतां वरः ।15 मद्रराजो महेष्वासः शल्यो मेऽतिरथो मतः । स्पर्धते वासुदेवेन यो वै नित्यं रणे रणे ॥ 16॥ भूरिश्रवाः कृतास्त्रश्च तव चापि हितः सुहृत् ॥ सौमदत्तिर्महेष्वासो रथयूथपयूथपः । बलक्षयममित्राणां सुमहान्तं करिष्यति ॥ 17॥ सिन्धुराजो महाराज मतो मे द्विगुणो रथः । योत्स्यते समरे राजन्विक्रान्तो रथसत्तमः ॥ 18॥ द्रौपदीहरणे पूर्वं परिक्लिष्टः स पाण्डवैः । संस्मरंस्तं परिक्लेशं योत्स्यते परवीरहा ॥ 19॥ सुदक्षिणस्तु काम्बोजो रथ एकगुणो मतः । तवार्थसिद्धिमाकाङ्क्षन्योत्स्यते समरे परैः ॥ 20 नीलो माहिष्मतीवासी नीलवर्मधरस्तव । रथवंशेन शत्रूणां कदनं वै करिष्यति ॥ 21॥ विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ समेतौ रथसत्तमौ । कृतिनौ समरे तात दृढवीर्यपराक्रमौ ॥ 22॥ त्रिगर्ता भ्रातरः पञ्च रथोदारा मता मम । कृतवैराश्च पार्थेन विराटनगरे तदा ॥ 23॥ लक्ष्मणस्तव पुत्रस्तु तथा दुःशासनस्य च । उभौ तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ सङ्ग्रामेष्वनिवर्तिनौ ॥ 24॥ तरुणौ सुकुमारौ च राजपुत्रौ तरस्विनौ । युद्धानां च विशेषज्ञौ प्रणेतारौ च सर्वशः ॥ 25॥ दण्डधारो महाराज रथ एको नरर्षभः । योत्स्यते समरं प्राप्य स्वेन सैन्येन पालितः ॥ 26॥ बृहद्बलस्तथा राजा कौसल्यो रथसत्तमः । रथो मम मतस्तात दृढवेगपराक्रमः ॥ 27॥ कृपः शारद्वतो राजन्रथयूथपयूथपः । प्रियान्प्राणान्परित्यज्य प्रधक्ष्यति रिपूंस्तव ॥ 28॥ |

Dhritarashtra said, 'Now that you have taken command of the Kauravas, what did the great warrior, the son of Ganga, known for his intelligence and power, do?' Vaisampayana continued, 'In response to this question, Sanjaya informed him about what Bhishma, the eldest of the Kurus and a warrior of immense energy, had said.' Sanjaya replied, 'O king, when Bhishma received the command, he spoke these words to Duryodhana, bringing him great joy: 'I am skilled in all matters of war and familiar with different formations. I know how to direct regular soldiers and volunteers in their roles. When it comes to leading troops, forming lines for battle, or retreating, I am as knowledgeable, great king, as Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods! I will protect your army and fight according to the principles of warfare! Please, let your worries be eased!' Upon hearing this, Duryodhana said, 'O son of Ganga with strong arms, I assure you, I fear not even the combined might of gods and Asuras! How could I fear when you, the invincible one, lead my forces, alongside that champion, Drona, who is eager for battle? With you both fighting on my side, victory and even the rule of the heavens cannot be beyond my reach! However, I wish to know, O wise elder, who among my warriors and those of the enemy are considered Rathas and Atirathas. You are well aware of the strengths of our fighters and those against us! I desire to hear this knowledge, along with all these lords of the land!' "Bhishma said, 'Listen, O son of Gandhari, o king of kings, to the story of the Rathas in your own army! Hear, O king, about who the Rathas are and who the Atirathas are!
· First, with your fellow warriors including Dussasana and others, you stand among the greatest of the Rathas! All of you excel in striking and are skilled at breaking chariots and piercing foes. You are all expert charioteers while driving from the front, and you excel at managing elephants while riding them. You are also proficient fighters with maces, spears, swords, and shields. I won’t speak of my own abilities; you already know them. · The greatest of all weapon wielders, chief Kritavarman is an Atiratha. Without a doubt, he will fulfill your battle needs. Immeasurable by skilled warriors, adept at throwing his weapons from afar, and a ferocious fighter, he will decimate the enemy ranks just as the mighty Indra defeats the Danavas. · The ruler of the Madras, the formidable archer Shalya, I believe, is also an Atiratha. This warrior boasts of being equal to Vasudeva in every battle.' · The mighty archer Bhurisravas, son of Somadatta, skilled in combat and true to your cause, leads the divisions of chariots. He will certainly wreak havoc among your enemies’ warriors. · Jayadratha, king of the Sindhus, is, in my view, as strong as two chariots. That outstanding warrior will showcase his skill in battle. Remembering how he was humiliated by the Pandavas when they captured Draupadi, he will fight fiercely for you. · Sudhakshina, the ruler of the Kambhojas, is like a single chariot. Loyal to your cause, he will definitely engage the enemy in combat. · Nila, dressed in blue armor and hailing from Mahishmati, is one of your chariots. He will bring great misfortune to your foes. · The fierce princes Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti are both excellent charioteers skilled in battle. · The five brothers of Trigarta are all top charioteers, having entered into conflict with the sons of Pritha in the city of Virata. · Your son Lakshmana and Dussasana’s son are both courageous in battle. Young and agile, these two princes, skilled in warfare and capable leaders, are among our best charioteers, worthy of praise as formidable warriors. Dedicated to the responsibilities of the warrior class, these two champions will accomplish remarkable deeds. · Dandadhara, O king, is like a formidable chariot, supported by his loyal soldiers, ready to fight bravely for you. · King Brihadbala, ruler of the Kosalas, is, in my view, also as powerful as a single chariot. Fierce in combat, this skilled archer is committed to the welfare of the Dhartarashtras and will give his all in battle, bringing joy to his allies. · Kripa, son of Saradwat, is a top leader among charioteers. Fearless even of his own life, he will obliterate your enemies. |

भीष्म उवाच॥ शकुनिर्मातुलस्तेऽसौ रथ एको नराधिप । प्रसज्य पाण्डवैर्वैरं योत्स्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ 1॥ द्रोणपुत्रो महेष्वासः सर्वेषामति धन्विनाम् । समरे चित्रयोधी च दृढास्त्रश्च महारथः ॥ 2॥ क्रोधस्तेजश्च तपसा सम्भृतोऽऽश्रमवासिना । द्रोणेनानुगृहीतश्च दिव्यैरस्त्रैरुदारधीः ॥ 3॥ दोषस्त्वस्य महानेको येनैष भरतर्षभ । न मे रथो नातिरथो मतः पार्थिवसत्तम ॥ 4 जीवितं प्रियमत्यर्थमायुष्कामः सदा द्विजः । न ह्यस्य सदृशः कश्चिदुभयोः सेनयोरपि ॥ 5॥ पिता त्वस्य महातेजा वृद्धोऽपि युवभिर्वरः । रणे कर्म महत्कर्ता तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ॥ 6॥ अस्त्रवेगानिलोद्धूतः सेनाकक्षेन्धनोत्थितः । पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्यानि प्रधक्ष्यति जये धृतः ॥ 7॥ रथयूथपयूथानां यूथपः स नरर्षभः । भारद्वाजात्मजः कर्ता कर्म तीव्रं हिताय वः ॥ 8॥ सर्वमूर्धाभिषिक्तानामाचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः । गच्छेदन्तं सृञ्जयानां प्रियस्त्वस्य धनञ्जयः ॥ 9॥ नैष जातु महेष्वासः पार्थमक्लिष्टकारिणम् । हन्यादाचार्यकं दीप्तं संस्मृत्य गुणनिर्जितम् ॥ 10॥ श्लाघत्येष सदा वीरः पार्थस्य गुणविस्तरैः । पुत्रादभ्यधिकं चैव भारद्वाजोऽनुपश्यति ॥ 11॥ पौरवो राजशार्दूलस्तव राजन्महारथः । मतो मम रथो वीर परवीररथारुजः ॥ 12॥ वृषसेनो रथाग्र्यस्ते कर्णपुत्रो महारथः । प्रधक्ष्यति रिपूणां ते बलानि बलिनां वरः ॥ 13॥ जलसन्धो महातेजा राजन्रथवरस्तव । त्यक्ष्यते समरे प्राणान्मागधः परवीरहा ॥ 14॥ बाह्लीकोऽतिरथश्चैव समरे चानिवर्तिता । मम राजन्मतो युद्धे शूरो वैवस्वतोपमः ॥ 15॥ सेनापतिर्महाराज सत्यवांस्ते महारथः । रणेष्वद्भुतकर्मा च रथः पररथारुजः ॥ 16॥ एष चारिषु विक्रान्तः कर्म सत्पुरुषोचितम् । कर्ता विमर्दे सुमहत्त्वदर्थे पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ 17॥ अलायुधो राक्षसेन्द्रः क्रूरकर्मा महाबलः । हनिष्यति परान्राजन्पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन् ॥ 18॥ एष राक्षससैन्यानां सर्वेषां रथसत्तमः । मायावी दृढवैरश्च समरे विचरिष्यति ॥ 19॥ प्राग्ज्योतिषाधिपो वीरो भगदत्तः प्रतापवान् । गजाङ्कुशधरश्रेष्ठो रथे चैव विशारदः ॥ 20॥ |

Bhishma continued,
· 'Your maternal uncle Shakuni, O king, is like a powerful chariot. He has instigated the current conflict with the sons of Pandu and is ready to fight. · Aswatthaman, Drona's son, is unmatched among archers. Skilled in all forms of combat and wielding invincible weapons, he is a great warrior. Through his austerities in the hermitage, he has heightened his rage and strength. Gifted with great intelligence, Drona has blessed him with celestial arms. However, there is a significant flaw in him, due to which I do not see him as a true warrior. This esteemed man has a deep love for life, and life means everything to him. · Drona, his father, is powerful and even in old age surpasses many youths. He will perform remarkable feats in battle, there is no doubt. Firmly planting himself on the battlefield, he will decimate Yudhishthira's forces. The Pandava army will be like dried grass, ready to ignite, and the force of his weapons will be the wind that fans the flames. This mighty man leads the charioteers. Drona will achieve incredible victories for your sake! He, the teacher of all noble Kshatriyas, will eliminate the Srinjayas. Yet, he holds Dhananjaya dear. This great archer, because of his own esteemed service as a teacher, will struggle to defeat Partha, who achieves great feats with ease. O hero, Drona often praises Partha's many talents. In fact, Bharadwaja has more affection for him than for his own son. With tremendous strength, he can, in a single chariot, overcome in battle all gods, Gandharvas, and uniting humans. · Among your great warriors, Paurava stands out like a tiger. He can break through enemy ranks and, in my opinion, is one of your best chariot-fighters. Leading his large army, he will devastate the Panchalas as fire devours dry grass. · Similarly, Vrishasena, Karna's son, is among your top chariot warriors and will overpower your enemy's troops. Full of energy, Jalasandha, from the lineage of Madhu, is another of your elite warriors; he is ready to sacrifice his life in battle. · Bahlika, who never retreats and is as fierce as Yama himself, is, in my view, an Atiratha. He charges into battle without hesitation and will slay foes like the Wind-god. · As for Satyavan, your commander skilled in tactics and known for his remarkable prowess, he is a Maharatha who faces battle without fear. · Your chief of Rakshasas, Alambhusha, known for his ruthless actions and remembering his past conflicts with the Pandavas, will wreak havoc in combat. He is the best of the Rakshasa warriors, skilled in deception and fierce on the battlefield. · Lastly, Bhagadatta, the brave ruler of Pragjyotisha, is unmatched among those who wield the elephant hook and excels in chariot warfare. |

भीष्म उवाच॥ अचलो वृषकश्चैव भ्रातरौ सहितावुभौ । रथौ तव दुराधर्षौ शत्रून्विध्वंसयिष्यतः ॥ 1॥ सखा ते दयितो नित्यं य एष रणकर्कशः । प्रोत्साहयति राजंस्त्वां विग्रहे पाण्डवैः सह ॥ 2॥ एष नैव रथः पूर्णो नाप्येवातिरथो नृप । वियुक्तः कवचेनैष सहजेन विचेतनः ॥ 3॥ कुण्डलाभ्यां च दिव्याभ्यां वियुक्तः सततं घृणी ॥ अभिशापाच्च रामस्य ब्राह्मणस्य च भाषणात् । 4 करणानां वियोगाच्च तेन मेऽर्धरथो मतः ॥ नैष फल्गुनमासाद्य पुनर्जीवन्विमोक्ष्यते ॥ 5॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ ततोऽब्रवीन्महाबाहुर्द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः । एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वं न मिथ्यास्तीति किञ्चन ॥ 6॥ रणे रणेऽतिमानी च विमुखश्चैव दृश्यते । घृणी कर्णः प्रमादी च तेन मेऽर्धरथो मतः ॥ 7॥ एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु राधेयः क्रोधादुत्फुल्ललोचनः । उवाच भीष्मं राजेन्द्र तुदन्वाग्भिः प्रतोदवत् ॥ 8॥ पितामह यथेष्टं मां वाक्षरैरुपकृन्तसि । अनागसं सदा द्वेषादेवमेव पदे पदे ॥ 9॥ मर्षयामि च तत्सर्वं दुर्योधनकृतेन वै ॥ त्वं तु मां मन्यसेऽशक्तं यथा कापुरुषं तथा । भवानर्धरथो मह्यं मतो नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥ 10॥ सर्वस्य जगतश्चैव गाङ्गेय न मृषा वदे । कुरूणामहितो नित्यं न च राजावबुध्यते ॥ 11॥ को हि नाम समानेषु राजसूदात्तकर्मसु । तेजोवधमिमं कुर्याद्विभेदयिषुराहवे ॥ यथा त्वं गुणनिर्देशादपराधं चिकीर्षसि ॥ 12॥ यथेच्छकं स्वयङ्ग्राहाद्रथानतिरथांस्तथा । कामद्वेषसमायुक्तो मोहात्प्रकुरुते भवान् ॥ 13॥ दुर्योधन महाबाहो साधु सम्यगवेक्ष्यताम् । त्यज्यतां दुष्टभावोऽयं भीष्मः किल्बिषकृत्तव ॥ 14॥ भिन्ना हि सेना नृपते दुःसन्धेया भवत्युत । मौलापि पुरुषव्याघ्र किमु नाना समुत्थिता ॥ 15॥ आसाद्य माममोघेषुं गमिष्यन्ति दिशो दश । पाण्डवाः सहपञ्चालाः शार्दूलं वृषभा इव ॥ 16॥ क्व च युद्धविमर्दो वा मन्त्राः सुव्याहृतानि वा । क्व च भीष्मो गतवया मन्दात्मा कालमोहितः ॥ 17॥ स्पर्धते हि सदा नित्यं सर्वेण जगता सह । न चान्यं पुरुषं कञ्चिन्मन्यते मोघदर्शनः ॥ 18॥ श्रोतव्यं खलु वृद्धानामिति शास्त्रनिदर्शनम् । न त्वेवाप्यतिवृद्धानां पुनर्बाला हि ते मताः ॥ 19॥ अहमेको हनिष्यामि पाण्डवान्नात्र संशयः । सुयुद्धे राजशार्दूल यशो भीष्मं गमिष्यति ॥ 20॥ कृतः सेनापतिस्त्वेष त्वया भीष्मो नराधिप । सेनापतिं गुणो गन्ता न तु योधान्कथञ्चन ॥ 21॥ भीष्म उवाच॥ समुद्यतोऽयं भारो मे सुमहान्सागरोपमः । धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सङ्ग्रामे वर्षपूगाभिचिन्तितः ॥ 22 तस्मिन्नभ्यागते काले प्रतप्ते लोमहर्षणे । मिथोभेदो न मे कार्यस्तेन जीवसि सूतज ॥ 23॥ न ह्यहं नाद्य विक्रम्य स्थविरोऽपि शिशोस्तव । युद्धश्रद्धां रणे छिन्द्यां जीवितस्य च सूतज ॥ 24॥ जामदग्न्येन रामेण महास्त्राणि प्रमुञ्चता । न मे व्यथाभवत्काचित्त्वं तु मे किं करिष्यसि ॥ 25॥ त्वां प्राप्य वैरपुरुषं कुरूणामनयो महान् । उपस्थितो विनाशाय यतस्व पुरुषो भव ॥ 26॥ युध्यस्व पार्थं समरे येन विस्पर्धसे सह । द्रक्ष्यामि त्वां विनिर्मुक्तमस्माद्युद्धात्सुदुर्मते ॥ 27॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ तमुवाच ततो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो महामनाः । मामवेक्षस्व गाङ्गेय कार्यं हि महदुद्यतम् ॥ 28॥ चिन्त्यतामिदमेवाग्रे मम निःश्रेयसं परम् । उभावपि भवन्तौ मे महत्कर्म करिष्यतः ॥ 29॥ भूयश्च श्रोतुमिच्छामि परेषां रथसत्तमान् । ये चैवातिरथास्तत्र तथैव रथयूथपाः ॥ 30॥ बलाबलममित्राणां श्रोतुमिच्छामि कौरव । प्रभातायां रजन्यां वै इदं युद्धं भविष्यति ॥ 31॥ |

Bhishma said,
· 'Both Achala and Vrisha are great charioteers. Unbeatable in combat, they will defeat your enemies.
· As for your ever-loyal friend, this one who constantly brags about his battle skills, this one who always pushes you, O king, to fight the Pandavas, this arrogant fool, Karna, the son of Surya, your advisor and companion, this conceited man who lacks wisdom, Karna is neither a great charioteer nor a formidable one. Lacking sense, he has lost his natural armour. Though kind-hearted, he has also been stripped of his divine earrings. Due to the curse of Rama, his mentor in war, and another curse from a Brahmana, as well as his loss of battle gear, I believe he is merely half a charioteer. When he confronts Phalguni in battle, he is unlikely to survive!' Hearing this, Drona, the most skilled warrior, responded, 'What you say is true! He boasts before every battle, yet he always withdraws from every fight. Compassionate yet incompetent, that’s why, in my opinion, Karna is only half a charioteer!
"Upon hearing these words, Radha's son, his eyes wide with anger, attacked Bhishma with piercing words like sharp arrows, saying to Ganga's son, 'O grandsire, even though I am innocent, your disdain for me causes you to wound me with your sharp words at every turn. I endure all this for Duryodhana's sake. You portray me as only half a warrior, deeming me worthless, as if I were a coward! Is there any doubt about this? I don’t lie when I say that you, O son of Ganga, are an enemy to the entire world, especially to all the Kurus! Yet the king remains unaware of this! Who else would try to divide and weaken these brave kings, all equal in might, as you do out of your hatred for talent? Guided by lust and envy, and acting out of ignorance, you have ranked warriors based solely on your whims! Blessed be you, mighty Duryodhana, think wisely! Cast aside this wicked Bhishma, who wrongs you! Once your warriors become divided, it will be hard to unite them again. O tiger among men, your main army will struggle to unite under these conditions, and it will be even harder to gather an army from various lands.! When the Pandavas and the Panchalas encounter me, who never wastes an arrow, they will scatter like oxen fleeing from a tiger! Where have all the battles gone, with the clash of armed warriors, the wise strategies, and eloquent speeches? And what of Bhishma, old and wicked, driven by fate to face his doom? He stands alone against the entire universe, seeing no one else as worthy. It's true that wisdom teaches us to heed the advice of the elderly, but that doesn't apply to those who are too old, as they revert to a childlike state. I will single-handedly wipe out the Pandava army! But the glory of this victory will belong to Bhishma, fierce among kings, for you, O king, have made him the leader of your forces, and fame always belongs to the commander, not the troops. Bhishma said, 'I am about to take on the immense burden of Duryodhana's battle against the Pandavas, a task I have contemplated for many years. Now that the moment for this fierce confrontation has arrived, I should not bring discord among us. This is why you exist, Suta's son! Otherwise, despite my old age and your youth, I would extinguish your desire for battle and snuff out your hopes of survival! Even Rama, the son of Jamadagni, with all his powerful weapons, couldn't harm me. What can you possibly do to me? Alone, I have halted the charge of countless kings and their soldiers on this battlefield! With you embodying conflict, disaster is poised to strike the Kurus! So, strive to defeat our enemies. Be brave, challenge Arjuna, as you often do. Oh, with your wicked thoughts, I want to see you emerge alive from that battle!' "King Duryodhana then said to Bhishma, who was strong and powerful, 'Look at me, O son of Ganga! There’s an important task ahead! Consider carefully how I can gain the most from this situation! Both of you will provide me with great support! I want to learn about the best chariot-warriors among our enemies, especially those who are the greatest fighters and those who lead the chariot divisions. O Kaurava, I want to know the strengths and weaknesses of my opponents, for when dawn arrives, our great battle will begin.' |
