वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततः प्रहस्य दाशार्हः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः । दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥ 1॥ लप्स्यसे वीरशयनं काममेतदवाप्स्यसि । स्थिरो भव सहामात्यो विमर्दो भविता महान् ॥ 2॥ यच्चैवं मन्यसे मूढ न मे कश्चिद्व्यतिक्रमः । पाण्डवेष्विति तत्सर्वं निबोधत नराधिपाः ॥ 3॥ श्रिया सन्तप्यमानेन पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् । त्वया दुर्मन्त्रितं द्यूतं सौबलेन च भारत ॥ 4॥ कथं च ज्ञातयस्तात श्रेयांसः साधुसंमताः । तथान्याय्यमुपस्थातुं जिह्मेनाजिह्मचारिणः ॥ 5॥ अक्षद्यूतं महाप्राज्ञ सतामरतिनाशनम् । असतां तत्र जायन्ते भेदाश्च व्यसनानि च ॥ 6॥ तदिदं व्यसनं घोरं त्वया द्यूतमुखं कृतम् । असमीक्ष्य सदाचारैः सार्धं पापानुबन्धनैः ॥ 7॥ कश्चान्यो ज्ञातिभार्यां वै विप्रकर्तुं तथार्हति । आनीय च सभां वक्तुं यथोक्ता द्रौपदी त्वया ॥ 8॥ कुलीना शीलसम्पन्ना प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसी । महिषी पाण्डुपुत्राणां तथा विनिकृता त्वया ॥ 9॥ जानन्ति कुरवः सर्वे यथोक्ताः कुरुसंसदि । दुःशासनेन कौन्तेयाः प्रव्रजन्तः परन्तपाः ॥ 10॥ सम्यग्वृत्तेष्वलुब्धेषु सततं धर्मचारिषु । स्वेषु बन्धुषु कः साधुश्चरेदेवमसाम्प्रतम् ॥ 11॥ नृशंसानामनार्याणां परुषाणां च भाषणम् । कर्णदुःशासनाभ्यां च त्वया च बहुशः कृतम् ॥ 12॥ सह मात्रा प्रदग्धुं तान्बालकान्वारणावते । आस्थितः परमं यत्नं न समृद्धं च तत्तव ॥ 13॥ ऊषुश्च सुचिरं कालं प्रच्छन्नाः पाण्डवास्तदा । मात्रा सहैकचक्रायां ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने ॥ 14॥ विषेण सर्पबन्धैश्च यतिताः पाण्डवास्त्वया । सर्वोपायैर्विनाशाय न समृद्धं च तत्तव ॥ 15॥ एवम्बुद्धिः पाण्डवेषु मिथ्यावृत्तिः सदा भवान् । कथं ते नापराधोऽस्ति पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ॥ 16॥ कृत्वा बहून्यकार्याणि पाण्डवेषु नृशंसवत् । मिथ्यावृत्तिरनार्यः सन्नद्य विप्रतिपद्यसे ॥ 17॥ मातापितृभ्यां भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च । शाम्येति मुहुरुक्तोऽसि न च शाम्यसि पार्थिव ॥ 18॥ शमे हि सुमहानर्थस्तव पार्थस्य चोभयोः । न च रोचयसे राजन्किमन्यद्बुद्धिलाघवात् ॥ 19॥ न शर्म प्राप्स्यसे राजन्नुत्क्रम्य सुहृदां वचः । अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च क्रियते पार्थिव त्वया ॥ 20॥ एवं ब्रुवति दाशार्हे दुर्योधनममर्षणम् । दुःशासन इदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥ 21॥ न चेत्सन्धास्यसे राजन्स्वेन कामेन पाण्डवैः । बद्ध्वा किल त्वां दास्यन्ति कुन्तीपुत्राय कौरवाः ॥ 22॥ वैकर्तनं त्वां च मां च त्रीनेतान्मनुजर्षभ । पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रदास्यन्ति भीष्मो द्रोणः पिता च ते ॥ 23॥ भ्रातुरेतद्वचः श्रुत्वा धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः । क्रुद्धः प्रातिष्ठतोत्थाय महानाग इव श्वसन् ॥ 24॥ विदुरं धृतराष्ट्रं च महाराजं च बाह्लिकम् । कृपं च सोमदत्तं च भीष्मं द्रोणं जनार्दनम् ॥ 25॥ सर्वानेताननादृत्य दुर्मतिर्निरपत्रपः । अशिष्टवदमर्यादो मानी मान्यावमानिता ॥ 26॥ तं प्रस्थितमभिप्रेक्ष्य भ्रातरो मनुजर्षभम् । अनुजग्मुः सहामात्या राजानश्चापि सर्वशः ॥ 27॥ सभायामुत्थितं क्रुद्धं प्रस्थितं भ्रातृभिः सह । दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य भीष्मः शान्तनवोऽब्रवीत् ॥ 28॥ धर्मार्थावभिसन्त्यज्य संरम्भं योऽनुमन्यते । हसन्ति व्यसने तस्य दुर्हृदो नचिरादिव ॥ ॥29 दुरात्मा राजपुत्रोऽयं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽनुपायवित् । मिथ्याभिमानी राज्यस्य क्रोधलोभवशानुगः ॥ 30॥ कालपक्वमिदं मन्ये सर्वक्षत्रं जनार्दन । सर्वे ह्यनुसृता मोहात्पार्थिवाः सह मन्त्रिभिः ॥ 31॥ भीष्मस्याथ वचः श्रुत्वा दाशार्हः पुष्करेक्षणः । भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वानभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान् ॥ 32॥ सर्वेषां कुरुवृद्धानां महानयमतिक्रमः । प्रसह्य मन्दमैश्वर्ये न नियच्छत यन्नृपम् ॥ 33॥ तत्र कार्यमहं मन्ये प्राप्तकालमरिंदमाः । क्रियमाणे भवेच्छ्रेयस्तत्सर्वं शृणुतानघाः ॥ 34॥ प्रत्यक्षमेतद्भवतां यद्वक्ष्यामि हितं वचः । भवतामानुकूल्येन यदि रोचेत भारताः ॥ 35॥ भोजराजस्य वृद्धस्य दुराचारो ह्यनात्मवान् । जीवतः पितुरैश्वर्यं हृत्वा मन्युवशं गतः ॥ 36॥ उग्रसेनसुतः कंसः परित्यक्तः स बान्धवैः । ज्ञातीनां हितकामेन मया शस्तो महामृधे ॥ 37॥ आहुकः पुनरस्माभिर्ज्ञातिभिश्चापि सत्कृतः । उग्रसेनः कृतो राजा भोजराजन्यवर्धनः ॥ 38॥ कंसमेकं परित्यज्य कुलार्थे सर्वयादवाः । सम्भूय सुखमेधन्ते भारतान्धकवृष्णयः ॥ 39॥ तथा दुर्योधनं कर्णं शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् । बद्ध्वा दुःशासनं चापि पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रयच्छत ॥ 40॥ त्यजेत्कुलार्थे पुरुषं ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् । ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥ 41॥ राजन्दुर्योधनं बद्ध्वा ततः संशाम्य पाण्डवैः । त्वत्कृते न विनश्येयुः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥ 42॥ |

" Vaisampayana said, 'With his eyes blazing in anger, Krishna addressed Duryodhana in the assembly of the Kuru princes and said, 'Do you wish for a hero's resting place? You will receive it, along with your advisors. Just wait for a moment; a great slaughter is coming. Do you really believe, foolish one, that you haven't wronged the Pandavas? Let the assembled kings be the judge. Suffering from the prosperity of the noble Pandavas, you are conspiring, O Bharata, with Shakuni over the gambling match. How could your virtuous and honourable relatives take part in such a wicked act alongside the deceitful Shakuni? O wise one, gambling can rob even the good of their sense, and for the wicked, it brings discord and disaster. It was you who planned this terrible calamity of a gambling match with your evil advisors, without consulting anyone virtuous. Who could disrespect a brother's wife as you did, dragging her into the assembly and speaking to her as you did to Draupadi? Though born of noble blood and known for her admirable conduct, the queen of Pandu's sons was treated like this by you. Everyone knows what Dussasana said to the sons of Kunti in the assembly when they were about to head into the forest. Who is capable of being so despicable toward his honest kinsmen, who are dedicated to virtue, free of greed, and always righteous in their actions?' Such cruel and contemptible language is spoken only by those devoid of heart, frequently echoed by Karna and Dussasana, as well as you. You made great efforts to burn alive the sons of Pandu and their mother in Varanavata when they were just children, though your attempt ended in failure. After that, the Pandavas and their mother had to hide away for a long time in the town of Ekachakra, sheltered by a Brahmana. You have tried every means of their destruction—poison, snakes, and ropes—but none of your schemes have worked. With such treachery, how can you deny having wronged the noble Pandavas? You, wicked man, refuse to grant them their rightful share of the kingdom, even as they plead with you for it. You will eventually have to give it to them when you are brought low and stripped of your fortunes. Having callously wronged the Pandavas and betrayed them, you now attempt to appear virtuous. Despite being urged by your parents, Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura to make peace, you still refuse, O king. Peace would greatly benefit both you and Yudhishthira, yet it seems you have lost the will for it. Ignoring the advice of your friends will lead you away from your own good. The actions you are about to take are sinful and disgraceful, O king.' "Vaisampayana went on, 'As the one from Dasarha's lineage spoke these words, Dussasana turned to the vengeful Duryodhana and said in front of the Kauravas, 'If you, O king, do not choose to make peace with the Pandavas, it is certain that the Kauravas will restrain you and hand you over to the son of Kunti. Bhishma, Drona, and even your father, O mighty one, will surrender us—Vikartana's son, yourself, and me—to the Pandavas!' Vaisampayana continued, 'Upon hearing his brother's words, Dhritarashtra's son, the wicked and arrogant Suyodhana, furious like a great serpent, rose from his seat in anger. He disregarded Vidura, Dhritarashtra, the great king Bahlika, Kripa, Somadatta, Bhishma, Drona, and Janardana—all of them—and stormed out of the court. Noticing this formidable man leave, his brother and all his advisors, along with the kings, followed him. As Duryodhana left the court in rage with his brothers, Bhishma, son of Santanu, remarked, 'The enemies of one who forsakes virtue and gain and is driven by anger will soon see him fall into distress. ‘This wicked son of Dhritarashtra, unaware of the true path to achieve his goals, this fool who is wrongly proud of his power, only follows the commands of anger and greed. I see, O Janardana, that the moment has come for all those Kshatriyas, as the kings, caught in delusion, have sided with Duryodhana and his advisors.’ Hearing Bhishma's words, Krishna, addressed everyone present, including Bhishma and Drona: 'This is a serious wrongdoing by the elders of the Kuru family, as they fail to restrain and bind this wicked king in his pursuit of power. Brave ones, I believe the time has come to act. If we do this, it still might lead to good outcomes. Listen to me, you virtuous ones. What I will say can bring beneficial results if you, O Bharatas, heed my advice as it is worthwhile. The wicked son of the old Bhoja king, having taken his father's power while he was still alive, invited his own demise. Indeed, Kansa, the son of Ugrasena, forsaken by his kin, was defeated by me in a great battle, all for the good of my family. We, together with our relatives, honored Ugrasena, the son of Ahuka, and placed that rightful ruler on the throne. All the Yadavas, Andhakas, and Vrishnis, leaving behind Kansa for the welfare of their entire lineage, have thrived and found happiness. Similarly, Duryodhana, Karna, Sakuni, the son of Suvala, and Dussasana can be bound, hand them over to the Pandavas. For the good of a family, one person might need to be sacrificed. For a village, a family might need to be sacrificed. For a province, a village may be sacrificed. Ultimately, for one's own sake, one might sacrifice the entire earth. O king, by securely binding Duryodhana, seek peace with the Pandavas. O leader among warriors, do not let the entire Kshatriya clan be destroyed because of you." |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततोऽब्रवीन्महाबाहुर्धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् । द्रोणं पितामहं भीष्मं क्षत्तारं बाह्लिकं कृपम् ॥ 1॥ प्रत्यक्षमेतद्भवतां यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि । यथा चाशिष्टवन्मन्दो रोषादसकृदुत्थितः ॥ 2॥ वदत्यनीशमात्मानं धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः । आपृच्छे भवतः सर्वान्गमिष्यामि युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 3॥ आमन्त्र्य प्रस्थितं शौरिं रथस्थं पुरुषर्षभम् । अनुजग्मुर्महेष्वासाः प्रवीरा भरतर्षभाः ॥ 4॥ भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपः क्षत्ता धृतराष्ट्रोऽथ बाह्लिकः । अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च युयुत्सुश्च महारथः ॥ 5॥ ततो रथेन शुभ्रेण महता किङ्किणीकिना । कुरूणां पश्यतां प्रायात्पृथां द्रष्टुं पितृष्वसाम् ॥ 6॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ प्रविश्याथ गृहं तस्याश्चरणावभिवाद्य च । आचख्यौ तत्समासेन यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि ॥ 7॥ वासुदेव उवाच॥ उक्तं बहुविधं वाक्यं ग्रहणीयं सहेतुकम् । ऋषिभिश्च मया चैव न चासौ तद्गृहीतवान् ॥ 8॥ कालपक्वमिदं सर्वं दुर्योधनवशानुगम् । आपृच्छे भवतीं शीघ्रं प्रयास्ये पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥ 9॥ किं वाच्याः पाण्डवेयास्ते भवत्या वचनान्मया । तद्ब्रूहि त्वं महाप्राज्ञे शुश्रूषे वचनं तव ॥ 10॥ कुन्त्युवाच॥ नमो धर्माय महते धर्मो धारयति प्रजाः ॥ एतद्धनञ्जयो वाच्यो नित्योद्युक्तो वृकोदरः ॥ 11 यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते तस्य कालोऽयमागतः ॥ न हि वैरं समासाद्य सीदन्ति पुरुषर्षभाः ॥ 12॥ विदिता ते सदा बुद्धिर्भीमस्य न स शाम्यति । यावदन्तं न कुरुते शत्रूणां शत्रुकर्शनः ॥ 13॥ सर्वधर्मविशेषज्ञां स्नुषां पाण्डोर्महात्मनः । ब्रूया माधव कल्याणीं कृष्णां कृष्ण यशस्विनीम् ॥ 14॥ युक्तमेतन्महाभागे कुले जाते यशस्विनि । यन्मे पुत्रेषु सर्वेषु यथावत्त्वमवर्तिथाः ॥ 15॥ माद्रीपुत्रौ च वक्तव्यौ क्षत्रधर्मरतावुभौ । विक्रमेणार्जितान्भोगान्वृणीतं जीवितादपि ॥ 16॥ विक्रमाधिगता ह्यर्थाः क्षत्रधर्मेण जीवतः । मनो मनुष्यस्य सदा प्रीणन्ति पुरुषोत्तम ॥ 17॥ यच्च वः प्रेक्षमाणानां सर्वधर्मोपचायिनी । पाञ्चाली परुषाण्युक्ता को नु तत्क्षन्तुमर्हति ॥ 18॥ न राज्यहरणं दुःखं द्यूते चापि पराजयः । प्रव्राजनं सुतानां वा न मे तद्दुःखकारणम् ॥ 19॥ यत्तु सा बृहती श्यामा सभायां रुदती तदा । अश्रौषीत्परुषा वाचस्तन्मे दुःखतरं मतम् ॥ 20॥ स्त्रीधर्मिणी वरारोहा क्षत्रधर्मरता सदा । नाध्यगच्छत्तदा नाथं कृष्णा नाथवती सती ॥ 21॥ तं वै ब्रूहि महाबाहो सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् । अर्जुनं पुरुषव्याघ्रं द्रौपद्याः पदवीं चर ॥ 22॥ विदितौ हि तवात्यन्तं क्रुद्धाविव यमान्तकौ । भीमार्जुनौ नयेतां हि देवानपि परां गतिम् ॥ 23॥ तयोश्चैतदवज्ञानं यत्सा कृष्णा सभागता । दुःशासनश्च यद्भीमं कटुकान्यभ्यभाषत ॥ पश्यतां कुरुवीराणां तच्च संस्मारयेः पुनः ॥ 24॥ पाण्डवान्कुशलं पृच्छेः सपुत्रान्कृष्णया सह । मां च कुशलिनीं ब्रूयास्तेषु भूयो जनार्दन ॥ अरिष्टं गच्छ पन्थानं पुत्रान्मे परिपालय ॥ 25 वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ अभिवाद्याथ तां कृष्णः कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम् । निश्चक्राम महाबाहुः सिंहखेलगतिस्ततः ॥ 26॥ ततो विसर्जयामास भीष्मादीन्कुरुपुङ्गवान् । आरोप्य च रथे कर्णं प्रायात्सात्यकिना सह ॥ 27॥ ततो निर्याय नगरात्प्रययौ पुरुषोत्तमः । मन्त्रयामास च तदा कर्णेन सुचिरं सह ॥ 28॥ विसर्जयित्वा राधेयं सर्वयादवनन्दनः । ततो जवेन महता तूर्णमश्वानचोदयत् ॥ 29॥ ते व्यतीत्य तमध्वानं क्षिप्रं श्येना इवाशुगाः । उच्चैः सूर्यमुपप्लव्यं शार्ङ्गधन्वानमावहन् ॥ 30॥ |

Vaisampayana continued, 'The strong-armed Janardana then spoke to Dhritarashtra, Drona, the elder Bhishma, Kshattri, Vahlika, and Kripa, saying, 'You have all seen what has unfolded in the Kuru assembly, how wicked Duryodhana stormed out in anger like a foolish child, and how King Dhritarashtra has portrayed himself as helpless. With your permission, I will now return to Yudhishthira.' After bowing to them, Sauri, that great man, climbed onto his chariot and set off. The brave Bharatas— Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Kshattri, Aswatthaman, Vikarna, and the skilled warrior Yuyutsu— began to follow him. And Kesava, on his grand white chariot adorned with jingling bells, moved through the sight of the Kurus, towards the home of his aunt, Kunti.' Vaisampayana recounted, 'Upon entering her home and honoring her feet, Kesava promptly recounted everything that had happened in the Kuru assembly. Vasudeva said, 'I spoke many wise words filled with rationale, but Duryodhana disregarded them. As for Suyodhana and his allies, their time has come. With your permission, I will quickly go to the Pandavas. What should I convey as your message to them? Share your wise words with me, I wish to hear your counsel.' Kunti said, 'I honour righteousness, which is greater than all. It is righteousness that upholds all living beings. You must communicate this message to Dhananjaya. Then to Vrikodara, who is always eager to act, convey these words: 'The moment has arrived for what a Kshatriya woman brings forth a son for! Those who are the best among men never lose heart in battles. You know how Bhima feels. That warrior against foes is never satisfied until he conquers them. You should also tell the auspicious Krishna, revered by many, the daughter-in-law of noble Pandu, who understands every virtue, these words: 'O blessed one, of noble lineage and great renown, your kindness towards my sons is indeed commendable.' Additionally, remind the sons of Madri, who are devoted to Kshatriya ideals, to treasure those rewards earned through skill as more important than life itself. Accomplishments gained through effort always bring joy to those who live by Kshatriya values. As you strive to embrace every virtue, remember how the princess of Panchala was cruelly insulted before your eyes. Who can forgive such humiliation? I was not troubled by their loss of the kingdom, nor did their defeat in gambling upset me. But that noble and graceful Draupadi, while crying in the assembly, had to endure those harsh and insulting words—this is what truly pains me. Alas, beautiful Krishna, ever devoted to Kshatriya ways, had no defender on that day, despite being married to such mighty protectors.' O you of strong arms, tell that fierce warrior, Arjuna, the greatest of all fighters, that he should always follow the path shown by Draupadi. You know well, Kesava, that Bhima and Arjuna—those fearsome agents of destruction—can make even the gods submit to their power. Is it not a disgrace that their wife, Krishna, was dragged into the assembly? O Kesava, remind them of all the cruel and harsh words that Dussasana hurled at Bhima in front of all the Kuru warriors. Ask about the well-being of the Pandavas, their children, and Krishna, on my behalf. Tell them, O Janardana, that I am alright. Now you go on your noble journey, and look after my sons!' 'Vaisampayana went on, 'After bowing and circling around her, the mighty Krishna, whose stride was as regal as a lion's, left Pritha’s home. He then sent away the Kuru leaders, with Bhishma in charge, who had accompanied him, and taking Karna on his chariot, departed from the Kuru city, along with Satyaki. Once outside the city, the foremost among men discussed matters with Karna for a long time. Then, that joyous leader of the Yadavas sent Karna away and urged his horses for greater speed. Swiftly covering a great distance like swift hawks, they arrived at Upaplavya in no time, carrying the wielder of Saranga.' |
