वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ एवमुक्त्वा ततः कृष्णमभ्यभाषत भारत । स्वर्ग्यं लोक्यं च मामात्थ धर्म्यं न्याय्यं च केशव ॥ 1॥ न त्वहं स्ववशस्तात क्रियमाणं न मे प्रियम् । अङ्ग दुर्योधनं कृष्ण मन्दं शास्त्रातिगं मम ॥ 2॥ अनुनेतुं महाबाहो यतस्व पुरुषोत्तम । सुहृत्कार्यं तु सुमहत्कृतं ते स्याज्जनार्दन ॥ 3॥ ततोऽभ्यावृत्य वार्ष्णेयो दुर्योधनममर्षणम् । अब्रवीन्मधुरां वाचं सर्वधर्मार्थतत्त्ववित् ॥ 4॥ दुर्योधन निबोधेदं मद्वाक्यं कुरुसत्तम । समर्थं ते विशेषेण सानुबन्धस्य भारत ॥ 5॥ महाप्राज्ञ कुले जातः साध्वेतत्कर्तुमर्हसि । श्रुतवृत्तोपसम्पन्नः सर्वैः समुदितो गुणैः ॥ 6॥ दौष्कुलेया दुरात्मानो नृशंसा निरपत्रपाः । त एतदीदृशं कुर्युर्यथा त्वं तात मन्यसे ॥ 7॥ धर्मार्थयुक्ता लोकेऽस्मिन्प्रवृत्तिर्लक्ष्यते सताम् । असतां विपरीता तु लक्ष्यते भरतर्षभ ॥ 8॥ विपरीता त्वियं वृत्तिरसकृल्लक्ष्यते त्वयि । अधर्मश्चानुबन्धोऽत्र घोरः प्राणहरो महान् ॥ 9॥ अनेकशस्त्वन्निमित्तमयशस्यं च भारत । तमनर्थं परिहरन्नात्मश्रेयः करिष्यसि ॥ 10॥ भ्रातॄणामथ भृत्यानां मित्राणां च परन्तप । अधर्म्यादयशस्याच्च कर्मणस्त्वं प्रमोक्ष्यसे ॥ 11॥ प्राज्ञैः शूरैर्महोत्साहैरात्मवद्भिर्बहुश्रुतैः । सन्धत्स्व पुरुषव्याघ्र पाण्डवैर्भरतर्षभ ॥ 12॥ तद्धितं च प्रियं चैव धृतराष्ट्रस्य धीमतः । पितामहस्य द्रोणस्य विदुरस्य महामतेः ॥ 13॥ कृपस्य सोमदत्तस्य बाह्लीकस्य च धीमतः । अश्वत्थाम्नो विकर्णस्य सञ्जयस्य विशां पते ॥ 14॥ ज्ञातीनां चैव भूयिष्ठं मित्राणां च परन्तप । शमे शर्म भवेत्तात सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा ॥ 15॥ दुःशासने दुर्विषहे कर्णे चापि ससौबले । एतेष्वैश्वर्यमाधाय भूतिमिच्छसि भारत ॥ 16॥ न चैते तव पर्याप्ता ज्ञाने धर्मार्थयोस्तथा । विक्रमे चाप्यपर्याप्ताः पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत ॥ 17॥ न हीमे सर्वराजानः पर्याप्ताः सहितास्त्वया । क्रुद्धस्य भीमसेनस्य प्रेक्षितुं मुखमाहवे ॥ 18॥ इदं संनिहितं तात समग्रं पार्थिवं बलम् । अयं भीष्मस्तथा द्रोणः कर्णश्चायं तथा कृपः ॥ 19॥ भूरिश्रवाः सौमदत्तिरश्वत्थामा जयद्रथः । अशक्ताः सर्व एवैते प्रतियोद्धुं धनञ्जयम् ॥ 20॥ अजेयो ह्यर्जुनः क्रुद्धः सर्वैरपि सुरासुरैः । मानुषैरपि गन्धर्वैर्मा युद्धे चेत आधिथाः ॥ 21॥ दृश्यतां वा पुमान्कश्चित्समग्रे पार्थिवे बले । योऽर्जुनं समरे प्राप्य स्वस्तिमानाव्रजेद्गृहान् ॥ 21॥ किं ते जनक्षयेणेह कृतेन भरतर्षभ । यस्मिञ्जिते जितं ते स्यात्पुमानेकः स दृश्यताम् ॥ 22॥ यः स देवान्सगन्धर्वान्सयक्षासुरपन्नगान् । अजयत्खाण्डवप्रस्थे कस्तं युध्येत मानवः ॥ 23॥ पाण्डवैः संशमं कृत्वा कृत्वा च सुहृदां वचः । सम्प्रीयमाणो मित्रैश्च चिरं भद्राण्यवाप्स्यसि ॥ 24॥ |

Vaisampayana continued, 'The king of the Kuru lineage spoke to Krishna, saying, 'You have told me, O Kesava, about the path to heaven, what benefits the world, aligns with virtue, and is grounded in reason. However, I am not free from influence. Duryodhana always acts against my wishes. Therefore, O mighty-armed Krishna, the best among people, please try to reason with my foolish and wicked son, who disobeys me. He ignores the good advice of Gandhari, wise Vidura, and other friends like Bhishma, all of whom want what's best for him. So, I urge you, help counsel this deceitful, senseless, and wicked-hearted prince. By doing this, O Janardana, you will have performed a noble act that a true friend should do.' Thus addressed, the one of Vrishni's race, knowledgeable in virtue and good, approached the ever-angry Duryodhana and spoke these gentle words, 'O Duryodhana, best of the Kurus, heed these words of mine, meant for your benefit and that of your followers as well. You are born into a family known for its wisdom. It is your duty to act righteously as I suggest. You possess knowledge and display admirable behavior, showcasing all excellent qualities. Only those from lowly backgrounds or who are wicked, cruel, and shameless act in ways that please you. In this world, only the righteous follow the true call of virtue and benefit.' The tendencies of the wicked appear twisted. O noble leader of Bharata's line, the attitudes you keep showing are indeed twisted. Continuing like this is wrong, frightening, extremely evil, and could lead you to doom. It's senseless, and you cannot, O Bharata, hold onto it for long. If you can turn away from this sorrowful path and seek your own good, if, O foe-defeater, you can break free from the shameful actions of your brothers, followers, and advisers, then, O champion among men, make peace with the sons of Pandu, who are wise, brave, accomplished, and in full control of their souls. Such actions will please Dhritarashtra, who is wise, as well as Bhishma, Drona, the noble Kripa, Somadatta, the wise Bahlika, Aswatthaman, Vikarna, Sanjaya, Vivingsati, and many of your relatives and friends. The whole world, dear sir, will benefit from this peace. By relying on Dussasana, Durvisaha, Karna, and Suvala's son, you seek to maintain your success, O Bharata. Yet, these are far less capable than the Pandavas in knowledge, virtue, wealth, and strength. Truly, O Bharata, all these kings together, with you at the forefront, cannot even face Bhima in his fury on the battlefield. Indeed, this army of kings stands ready at your side, along with Bhishma, Drona, Karna, Kripa, Bhurisrava, Somadatta, Aswatthaman, and Jayadratha. None can stand against Dhananjaya. Truly, Arjuna cannot be defeated in battle, even by gods, demons, men, or celestial beings. Do not set your heart on this fight. Can you name a single royal who has faced Arjuna and returned unscathed? O noble warrior of the Bharata lineage, what is the point of causing universal destruction? Show me one person who can conquer Arjuna, for defeating him is the only path to victory for you. Who is brave enough to fight that son of Pandu, who has already defeated all the divine beings alongside Gandharvas, Yakshas, and serpents at Khandavaprastha? By giving half your kingdom to the sons of Pritha, you will gain great prosperity. If you make peace with the Pandavas, follow the advice of your allies, and celebrate with them, you will surely achieve lasting good.'" |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततः शान्तनवो भीष्मो दुर्योधनममर्षणम् । केशवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रोवाच भरतर्षभ ॥ 1॥ कृष्णेन वाक्यमुक्तोऽसि सुहृदां शममिच्छता । अनुपश्यस्व तत्तात मा मन्युवशमन्वगाः ॥ 2॥ अकृत्वा वचनं तात केशवस्य महात्मनः । श्रेयो न जातु न सुखं न कल्याणमवाप्स्यसि ॥ 3॥ धर्म्यमर्थं महाबाहुराह त्वां तात केशवः । तमर्थमभिपद्यस्व मा राजन्नीनशः प्रजाः ॥ 4॥ इमां श्रियं प्रज्वलितां भारतीं सर्वराजसु । जीवतो धृतराष्ट्रस्य दौरात्म्याद्भ्रंशयिष्यसि ॥ 5॥ आत्मानं च सहामात्यं सपुत्रपशुबान्धवम् । सहमित्रमसद्बुद्ध्या जीविताद्भ्रंशयिष्यसि ॥ 6॥ अतिक्रामन्केशवस्य तथ्यं वचनमर्थवत् । पितुश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ विदुरस्य च धीमतः ॥ 7॥ मा कुलघ्नोऽन्तपुरुषो दुर्मतिः कापथं गमः । पितरं मातरं चैव वृद्धौ शोकाय मा ददः ॥ 8॥ अथ द्रोणोऽब्रवीत्तत्र दुर्योधनमिदं वचः । अमर्षवशमापन्नं निःश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः ॥ 9॥ धर्मार्थयुक्तं वचनमाह त्वां तात केशवः । तथा भीष्मः शान्तनवस्तज्जुषस्व नराधिप ॥ 10॥ प्राज्ञौ मेधाविनौ दान्तावर्थकामौ बहुश्रुतौ । आहतुस्त्वां हितं वाक्यं तदादत्स्व परन्तप ॥ 11॥ अनुतिष्ठ महाप्राज्ञ कृष्णभीष्मौ यदूचतुः । मा वचो लघुबुद्धीनां समास्थास्त्वं परन्तप ॥ 12॥ ये त्वां प्रोत्साहयन्त्येते नैते कृत्याय कर्हिचित् । वैरं परेषां ग्रीवायां प्रतिमोक्ष्यन्ति संयुगे ॥ 13॥ मा कुरूञ्जीघनः सर्वान्पुत्रान्भ्रातॄंस्तथैव च । वासुदेवार्जुनौ यत्र विद्ध्यजेयं बलं हि तत् ॥ 14॥ तस्मिन्वाक्यान्तरे वाक्यं क्षत्तापि विदुरोऽब्रवीत् । दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य धार्तराष्ट्रममर्षणम् ॥ 15॥ दुर्योधन न शोचामि त्वामहं भरतर्षभ । इमौ तु वृद्धौ शोचामि गान्धारीं पितरं च ते ॥ 16॥ यावनाथौ चरिष्येते त्वया नाथेन दुर्हृदा । हतमित्रौ हतामात्यौ लूनपक्षाविव द्विजौ ॥ 17॥ भिक्षुकौ विचरिष्येते शोचन्तौ पृथिवीमिमाम् । कुलघ्नमीदृशं पापं जनयित्वा कुपूरुषम् ॥ 18॥ अथ दुर्योधनं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत । आसीनं भ्रातृभिः सार्धं राजभिः परिवारितम् ॥ 19॥ दुर्योधन निबोधेदं शौरिणोक्तं महात्मना । आदत्स्व शिवमत्यन्तं योगक्षेमवदव्ययम् ॥ 20॥ अनेन हि सहायेन कृष्णेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा । इष्टान्सर्वानभिप्रायान्प्राप्स्यामः सर्वराजसु ॥ 21॥ सुसंहितः केशवेन गच्छ तात युधिष्ठिरम् । चर स्वस्त्ययनं कृत्स्नं भारतानामनामयम् ॥ 22॥ वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन तात गच्छस्व सङ्गमम् । कालप्राप्तमिदं मन्ये मा त्वं दुर्योधनातिगाः ॥ 23॥ शमं चेद्याचमानं त्वं प्रत्याख्यास्यसि केशवम् । त्वदर्थमभिजल्पन्तं न तवास्त्यपराभवः ॥ 24॥ |

Vaisampayana said, 'Listen, O noble one of Bharata's lineage, to Kesava's words. Bhishma, son of Santanu, then addressed the vengeful Duryodhana, saying, 'Krishna has reached out to you, wishing to restore peace among your family. O chief, heed his advice and resist the pull of anger. If you ignore the wisdom of the noble Kesava, you will never find prosperity, happiness, or what is truly best for you. The powerful Kesava has shared counsel that aligns with virtue and benefit. Embrace it, and do not, O king, bring destruction upon the earth's people. Your pride will bring about the downfall of the Bharatas and ruin all during Dhritarashtra's reign, causing you along with your advisors, sons, brothers, and kin to lose their lives. If, O leading one of Bharata's blood, you disregard the advice of Kesava, your father, and wise Vidura—advice grounded in truth and beneficial for you—you'll be damning your lineage. Do not become the destroyer of your own people; do not commit wrongdoing, do not allow sin to control your heart. Do not drown your parents in deep sorrow.'' After Bhishma finished speaking, Drona turned to Duryodhana, who was seething with anger, and said, 'O king, the advice that Kesava has given you is wise and beneficial, and Bhishma has echoed the same sentiment. You should heed their words, for they are both knowledgeable and wise, aiming to help you with pure intentions and deep understanding. They have shared what will serve you well. Therefore, O wise king, follow the guidance of both Krishna and Bhishma. O master of warriors, don’t let confusion lead you to dismiss Madhava’s counsel. Those who flatter you cannot secure your victory; in battle, they will shift blame to others. Do not sacrifice the lives of the innocent. Do not kill your own kin. Remember that the force which includes Vasudeva and Arjuna cannot be defeated. Vaisampayana continued, 'When Drona finished, Vidura, known as Kshattri, looked at Duryodhana and said to the bitter son of Dhritarashtra, 'O Duryodhana, I do not pity you. My concern is for your aged parents, Gandhari and your father. They will lose you, their wicked protector, and be left vulnerable, like birds stripped of their wings, forced to fend for themselves, bereft of allies and guidance. With such a ruinous son, they will roam the earth in despair, surviving on whatever alms they can find.' After this, King Dhritarashtra turned to Duryodhana, who was sitting among his brothers and surrounded by various kings, and said, 'Listen, Duryodhana, to the wise words of Sauri. Embrace the teachings that are eternal, beneficial, and meant for your ultimate well-being. With the help of this Krishna, who is pure in action, we, among all kings, will surely attain our heart's desires. United by Kesava's strength, strive for reconciliation with Yudhishthira. Seek this great benefit for the Bharatas, like a sacred rite of peace. Through Vasudeva, foster a close bond with the Pandavas. I believe the time for this has come. Do not let this opportunity slip by. However, if you ignore Kesava, who is urging you to seek peace for the good of all, then victory will never be yours.'" |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ श्रुत्वा दुर्योधनो वाक्यमप्रियं कुरुसंसदि । प्रत्युवाच महाबाहुं वासुदेवं यशस्विनम् ॥ 1॥ प्रसमीक्ष्य भवानेतद्वक्तुमर्हति केशव । मामेव हि विशेषेण विभाष्य परिगर्हसे ॥ 2॥ भक्तिवादेन पार्थानामकस्मान्मधुसूदन । भवान्गर्हयते नित्यं किं समीक्ष्य बलाबलम् ॥ 3॥ भवान्क्षत्ता च राजा च आचार्यो वा पितामहः । मामेव परिगर्हन्ते नान्यं कञ्चन पार्थिवम् ॥ 4॥ न चाहं लक्षये कञ्चिद्व्यभिचारमिहात्मनः । अथ सर्वे भवन्तो मां विद्विषन्ति सराजकाः ॥ 5॥ न चाहं कञ्चिदत्यर्थमपराधमरिंदम । विचिन्तयन्प्रपश्यामि सुसूक्ष्ममपि केशव ॥ 6॥ प्रियाभ्युपगते द्यूते पाण्डवा मधुसूदन । जिताः शकुनिना राज्यं तत्र किं मम दुष्कृतम् ॥ 7॥ यत्पुनर्द्रविणं किञ्चित्तत्राजीयन्त पाण्डवाः । तेभ्य एवाभ्यनुज्ञातं तत्तदा मधुसूदन ॥ 8॥ अपराधो न चास्माकं यत्ते ह्यक्षपराजिताः । अजेया जयतां श्रेष्ठ पार्थाः प्रव्राजिता वनम् ॥ 9॥ केन चाप्यपवादेन विरुध्यन्तेऽरिभिः सह । अशक्ताः पाण्डवाः कृष्ण प्रहृष्टाः प्रत्यमित्रवत् ॥ 10॥ किमस्माभिः कृतं तेषां कस्मिन्वा पुनरागसि । धार्तराष्ट्राञ्जिघांसन्ति पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयैः सह ॥ 11॥ न चापि वयमुग्रेण कर्मणा वचनेन वा । वित्रस्ताः प्रणमामेह भयादपि शतक्रतोः ॥ 12॥ न च तं कृष्ण पश्यामि क्षत्रधर्ममनुष्ठितम् । उत्सहेत युधा जेतुं यो नः शत्रुनिबर्हण ॥ 13॥ न हि भीष्मकृपद्रोणाः सगणा मधुसूदन । देवैरपि युधा जेतुं शक्याः किमुत पाण्डवैः ॥ 14॥ स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठन्तो यदि माधव संयुगे । शस्त्रेण निधनं काले प्राप्स्यामः स्वर्गमेव तत् ॥ 15॥ मुख्यश्चैवैष नो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां जनार्दन । यच्छयीमहि सङ्ग्रामे शरतल्पगता वयम् ॥ 16॥ ते वयं वीरशयनं प्राप्स्यामो यदि संयुगे । अप्रणम्यैव शत्रूणां न नस्तप्स्यति माधव ॥ 17॥ राज्यांशश्चाभ्यनुज्ञातो यो मे पित्रा पुराभवत् । न स लभ्यः पुनर्जातु मयि जीवति केशव ॥ 18॥ यावच्च राजा ध्रियते धृतराष्ट्रो जनार्दन । न्यस्तशस्त्रा वयं ते वाप्युपजीवाम माधव ॥ 19॥ यद्यदेयं पुरा दत्तं राज्यं परवतो मम । अज्ञानाद्वा भयाद्वापि मयि बाले जनार्दन ॥ 20॥ न तदद्य पुनर्लभ्यं पाण्डवैर्वृष्णिनन्दन । ध्रियमाणे महाबाहो मयि सम्प्रति केशव ॥ 21॥ यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण माधव । तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥ 22॥ |

" Vaisampayana said, 'Upon hearing words that displeased him in that assembly of the Kurus, Duryodhana spoke to the renowned Kesava, saying, 'O Kesava, you should consider everything carefully before you speak. You harshly blame me without cause, despite always being treated with respect by the sons of Pritha. Have you truly evaluated our strengths and weaknesses before criticizing me? It seems that you, along with the King, the Teacher, and the Elder, only target me and not any other ruler. Yet, I see no fault in myself. Still, all of you, even the old king, seem to despise me. O vanquisher of enemies, I cannot find any significant fault in myself, nor even the smallest one. In the dice game that was enthusiastically accepted, it was the Pandavas who lost, leading to the victory of Sakuni. How could I be blamed for that? Furthermore, the wealth we acquired from the Pandavas was meant to be returned by my order. It is not our fault that the unbeatable Pandavas lost again at dice and had to retreat to the forest. What accusations can they lay upon us to view us as their foes? And, O Krishna, despite their apparent weakness, why do the Pandavas still approach us with such confidence, as if they were strong? What wrong have we done to them?' Why do the sons of Pandu and the Srinjayas seek to kill the sons of Dhritarashtra? We refuse to bow down to them in fear, even due to their fierce actions or harsh words. We won't submit to Indra himself, let alone the sons of Pandu. I, Krishna, don’t see anyone, upholding the principles of Kshatriya, who could possibly defeat us in battle. The gods themselves cannot defeat Bhishma, Kripa, Drona, and Karna; what chance do the Pandavas have? If we must fall in battle while staying true to our warrior code, even that will lead us to heaven. It is our duty as Kshatriyas to die on the battlefield, surrounded by arrows. If we must embrace death without yielding to our enemies, we will face it with honor. The kingdom my father once granted them will never be theirs again as long as I draw breath. As long as king Dhritarashtra lives, we and they must live under his rule, sheathing our weapons. The kingdom, once given away in my childhood out of ignorance or fear, cannot be handed back to the Pandavas again. O Kesava, as long as I live, even a tiny piece of land, the size of a needle’s point, will never be given to the Pandavas." |
