सञ्जय उवाच॥ ततो युधिष्ठिरो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय सुसमुद्यते । ते सेने सागरप्रख्ये मुहुः प्रचलिते नृप ॥ 1॥ विमुच्य कवचं वीरो निक्षिप्य च वरायुधम् । अवरुह्य रथात्तूर्णं पद्भ्यामेव कृताञ्जलिः ॥ 2॥ पितामहमभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः । वाग्यतः प्रययौ येन प्राङ्मुखो रिपुवाहिनीम् ॥ 3॥ तं प्रयान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः । अवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णं भ्रातृभिः सहितोऽन्वयात् ॥ 4॥ वासुदेवश्च भगवान्पृष्ठतोऽनुजगाम ह । यथामुख्याश्च राजानस्तमन्वाजग्मुरुत्सुकाः ॥ 5॥ अर्जुन उवाच॥ किं ते व्यवसितं राजन्यदस्मानपहाय वै । पद्भ्यामेव प्रयातोऽसि प्राङ्मुखो रिपुवाहिनीम् ॥ 6॥ भीमसेन उवाच॥ क्व गमिष्यसि राजेन्द्र निक्षिप्तकवचायुधः । दंशितेष्वरिसैन्येषु भ्रातॄनुत्सृज्य पार्थिव ॥ 7॥ नकुल उवाच॥ एवङ्गते त्वयि ज्येष्ठे मम भ्रातरि भारत । भीर्मे दुनोति हृदयं ब्रूहि गन्ता भवान्क्व नु ॥ 8॥ सहदेव उवाच॥ अस्मिन्रणसमूहे वै वर्तमाने महाभये । योद्धव्ये क्व नु गन्तासि शत्रूनभिमुखो नृप ॥ 9॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ एवमाभाष्यमाणोऽपि भ्रातृभिः कुरुनन्दन । नोवाच वाग्यतः किञ्चिद्गच्छत्येव युधिष्ठिरः ॥ 10॥ तानुवाच महाप्राज्ञो वासुदेवो महामनाः । अभिप्रायोऽस्य विज्ञातो मयेति प्रहसन्निव ॥ 11॥ एष भीष्मं तथा द्रोणं गौतमं शल्यमेव च । अनुमान्य गुरून्सर्वान्योत्स्यते पार्थिवोऽरिभिः ॥ 12॥ श्रूयते हि पुराकल्पे गुरूनननुमान्य यः । युध्यते स भवेद्व्यक्तमपध्यातो महत्तरैः ॥ 13॥ अनुमान्य यथाशास्त्रं यस्तु युध्येन्महत्तरैः । ध्रुवस्तस्य जयो युद्धे भवेदिति मतिर्मम ॥ 14॥ एवं ब्रुवति कृष्णे तु धार्तराष्ट्रचमूं प्रति । हाहाकारो महानासीन्निःशब्दास्त्वपरेऽभवन् ॥ 15॥ दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरं दूराद्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकाः । मिथः सङ्कथयां चक्रुर्नेशोऽस्ति कुलपांसनः ॥ 16॥ व्यक्तं भीत इवाभ्येति राजासौ भीष्ममन्तिकात् । युधिष्ठिरः ससोदर्यः शरणार्थं प्रयाचकः ॥ 17॥ स विगाह्य चमूं शत्रोः शरशक्तिसमाकुलाम् । भीष्ममेवाभ्ययात्तूर्णं भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥ 18॥ तमुवाच ततः पादौ कराभ्यां पीड्य पाण्डवः । भीष्मं शान्तनवं राजा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम् ॥ 19॥ युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥ आमन्त्रये त्वां दुर्धर्ष योत्स्ये तात त्वया सह । अनुजानीहि मां तात आशिषश्च प्रयोजय ॥ 20॥ भीष्म उवाच॥ यद्येवं नाभिगच्छेथा युधि मां पृथिवीपते । शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय भारत ॥ 21॥ प्रीतोऽस्मि पुत्र युध्यस्व जयमाप्नुहि पाण्डव । यत्तेऽभिलषितं चान्यत्तदवाप्नुहि संयुगे ॥ 22॥ युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥ कथं जयेयं सङ्ग्रामे भवन्तमपराजितम् । एतन्मे मन्त्रय हितं यदि श्रेयः प्रपश्यसि ॥ 23॥ भीष्म उवाच॥ न तं पश्यामि कौन्तेय यो मां युध्यन्तमाहवे । विजयेत पुमान्कश्चिदपि साक्षाच्छतक्रतुः ॥ 24॥ युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥ हन्त पृच्छामि तस्मात्त्वां पितामह नमोऽस्तु ते । जयोपायं ब्रवीहि त्वमात्मनः समरे परैः ॥ 25॥ भीष्म उवाच॥ न शत्रुं तात पश्यामि समरे यो जयेत माम् । न तावन्मृत्युकालो मे पुनरागमनं कुरु ॥ 26॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ ततो युधिष्ठिरो वाक्यं भीष्मस्य कुरुनन्दन । शिरसा प्रतिजग्राह भूयस्तमभिवाद्य च ॥ 27॥ प्रायात्पुनर्महाबाहुराचार्यस्य रथं प्रति । पश्यतां सर्वसैन्यानां मध्येन भ्रातृभिः सह ॥ 28॥ स द्रोणमभिवाद्याथ कृत्वा चैव प्रदक्षिणम् । उवाच वाचा दुर्धर्षमात्मनिःश्रेयसं वचः ॥ 29॥ आमन्त्रये त्वां भगवन्योत्स्ये विगतकल्मषः । जयेयं च रिपून्सर्वाननुज्ञातस्त्वया द्विज ॥ 30॥ द्रोण उवाच॥ यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः । शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय सर्वशः ॥ 31॥ तद्युधिष्ठिर तुष्टोऽस्मि पूजितश्च त्वयानघ । अनुजानामि युध्यस्व विजयं समवाप्नुहि ॥ 32॥ यतो धर्मस्ततः कृष्णो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः । युध्यस्व गच्छ कौन्तेय पृच्छ मां किं ब्रवीमि ते ॥ 33॥ युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥ पृच्छामि त्वां द्विजश्रेष्ठ शृणु मे यद्विवक्षितम् । कथं जयेयं सङ्ग्रामे भवन्तमपराजितम् ॥ 34॥ द्रोण उवाच॥ न शत्रुं तात पश्यामि यो मां हन्याद्रणे स्थितम् । युध्यमानं सुसंरब्धं शरवर्षौघवर्षिणम् ॥ 35॥ ऋते प्रायगतं राजन्न्यस्तशस्त्रमचेतनम् । हन्यान्मां युधि योधानां सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ 36॥ शस्त्रं चाहं रणे जह्यां श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम् । श्रद्धेयवाक्यात्पुरुषादेतत्सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥ 37॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज भारद्वाजस्य धीमतः । अनुमान्य तमाचार्यं प्रायाच्छारद्वतं प्रति ॥ 38॥ सोऽभिवाद्य कृपं राजा कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम् । उवाच दुर्धर्षतमं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥ 39॥ अनुमानये त्वां योत्स्यामि गुरो विगतकल्मषः । जयेयं च रिपून्सर्वाननुज्ञातस्त्वयानघ ॥ 40॥ कृप उवाच॥ यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः । शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय सर्वशः ॥ 41॥ अवध्योऽहं महीपाल युध्यस्व जयमाप्नुहि ॥ प्रीतस्त्वभिगमेनाहं जयं तव नराधिप । आशासिष्ये सदोत्थाय सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ 42॥ एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज गौतमस्य वचस्तदा । अनुमान्य कृपं राजा प्रययौ येन मद्रराट् ॥ 43॥ स शल्यमभिवाद्याथ कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम् । उवाच राजा दुर्धर्षमात्मनिःश्रेयसं वचः ॥ 44॥ अनुमानये त्वां योत्स्यामि गुरो विगतकल्मषः । जयेयं च महाराज अनुज्ञातस्त्वया रिपून् ॥ 45॥ शल्य उवाच॥ यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः । शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय वै रणे ॥ 46॥ तुष्टोऽस्मि पूजितश्चास्मि यत्काङ्क्षसि तदस्तु ते । अनुजानामि चैव त्वां युध्यस्व जयमाप्नुहि ॥ 47॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ अनुमान्याथ कौन्तेयो मातुलं मद्रकेश्वरम् । निर्जगाम महासैन्याद्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥ 48॥ अथ सैन्यस्य मध्ये तु प्राक्रोशत्पाण्डवाग्रजः । योऽस्मान्वृणोति तदहं वरये साह्यकारणात् ॥ 49॥ अथ तान्समभिप्रेक्ष्य युयुत्सुरिदमब्रवीत् । प्रीतात्मा धर्मराजानं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 50॥ अहं योत्स्यामि मिषतः संयुगे धार्तराष्ट्रजान् । युष्मदर्थे महाराज यदि मां वृणुषेऽनघ ॥ 51॥ युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥ एह्येहि सर्वे योत्स्यामस्तव भ्रातॄनपण्डितान् । युयुत्सो वासुदेवश्च वयं च ब्रूम सर्वशः ॥ 52॥ वृणोमि त्वां महाबाहो युध्यस्व मम कारणात् । त्वयि पिण्डश्च तन्तुश्च धृतराष्ट्रस्य दृश्यते ॥ 53॥ भजस्वास्मान्राजपुत्र भजमानान्महाद्युते । न भविष्यति दुर्बुद्धिर्धार्तराष्ट्रोऽत्यमर्षणः ॥ 54॥ सञ्जय उवाच॥ ततो युयुत्सुः कौरव्यः परित्यज्य सुतांस्तव । जगाम पाण्डुपुत्राणां सेनां विश्राव्य दुन्दुभिम् ॥ 55॥ ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा सम्प्रहृष्टः सहानुजैः । जग्राह कवचं भूयो दीप्तिमत्कनकोज्ज्वलम् ॥ 56॥ प्रत्यपद्यन्त ते सर्वे रथान्स्वान्पुरुषर्षभाः । ततो व्यूहं यथापूर्वं प्रत्यव्यूहन्त ते पुनः ॥ 57॥ अवादयन्दुन्दुभींश्च शतशश्चैव पुष्करान् । सिंहनादांश्च विविधान्विनेदुः पुरुषर्षभाः ॥ 58॥ रथस्थान्पुरुषव्याघ्रान्पाण्डवान्प्रेक्ष्य पार्थिवाः । धृष्टद्युम्नादयः सर्वे पुनर्जहृषिरे मुदा ॥ 59॥ गौरवं पाण्डुपुत्राणां मान्यान्मानयतां च तान् । दृष्ट्वा महीक्षितस्तत्र पूजयां चक्रिरे भृशम् ॥ 60॥ सौहृदं च कृपां चैव प्राप्तकालं महात्मनाम् । दयां च ज्ञातिषु परां कथयां चक्रिरे नृपाः ॥ 61॥ साधु साध्विति सर्वत्र निश्चेरुः स्तुतिसंहिताः । वाचः पुण्याः कीर्तिमतां मनोहृदयहर्षिणीः ॥ 62॥ म्लेच्छाश्चार्याश्च ये तत्र ददृशुः शुश्रुवुस्तदा । वृत्तं तत्पाण्डुपुत्राणां रुरुदुस्ते सगद्गदाः ॥ 63॥ ततो जघ्नुर्महाभेरीः शतशश्चैव पुष्करान् । शङ्खांश्च गोक्षीरनिभान्दध्मुर्हृष्टा मनस्विनः ॥ 64॥ |

Sanjaya said, "Then, O king, as the two armies appeared like vast oceans, ready for battle and constantly shifting, the brave king Yudhishthira removed his armor and exceptional weapon, quickly stepped down from his chariot, and, with hands clasped in respect, walked towards the east, gazing at the elder statesman. With restrained words, he headed toward the enemy. Noticing this, Dhananjaya, Kunti's son, swiftly got down from his chariot and followed him, along with his brothers. Vasudeva also trailed behind, while the other leading kings of his army, filled with concern, followed suit. Arjuna said, 'What are you doing, O king, walking towards the enemy without your armor and leaving your brothers behind?' Bhimasena asked, 'Where do you think you’re going, O king of kings, without your armor or weapons, toward the armored enemy and abandoning us?' Nakula voiced, 'You are my eldest brother, O Bharata, and seeing you go like this fills me with fear. Please tell us where you are headed.' Sahadeva added, 'With these numerous and fierce hostile divisions here, why are you moving towards them, O king?'' Sanjaya continued, "Even though his brothers spoke to him, Yudhishthira, the son of the Kuru lineage, stayed silent and moved forward. Then, the wise and noble Vasudeva smiled and remarked, 'I know his purpose. After honouring his elders—Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Shalya—he will confront the enemy. History tells us that one who pays his respects to wise mentors and family before battling those superior to him is destined for victory. That is my belief.' As Krishna spoke, a loud cry of despair erupted from Dhritarashtra's army, while the opposing side remained calm. Noticing Yudhishthira, the courageous warriors of Dhritarashtra murmured among themselves, saying, 'This man is a disgrace to his lineage. Clearly, he approaches Bhishma in fear. Yudhishthira and his brothers seek refuge with Bhishma.' Meanwhile, the king, bravely navigating through the enemy lines filled with arrows and darts, swiftly made his way to Bhishma, accompanied by his brothers. He grasped Bhishma's feet with both hands and addressed Santanu's son, ready for battle, with these words." " Yudhishthira said, 'I greet you, O undefeated one. We will fight alongside you. Please grant us your permission and your blessing for this endeavour.' 'Bhishma replied, 'If, O ruler of the earth, you hadn't approached me for battle, I would have cursed you, O great king, for leading yourself to defeat. I am pleased with you, O son. Engage in battle and achieve victory, O son of Pandu.' 'Yudhishthira said, 'Thus, O respected elder, I beseech you. I bow to you, O grandfather, how can we, in combat, overcome you, the invincible? Share with me your wisdom on this, if you see any good reason to do so.''Bhishma responded, 'O son of Kunti, I do not see anyone, even if they were the chief of the gods, who could defeat me in battle.' 'Yudhishthira said, 'I pay my respects to you, O grandfather. Therefore, I ask you this: How can foes achieve your death in battle?' 'Bhishma answered, 'I do not perceive anyone, O sir, who could vanquish me in battle. My time of death has not yet arrived.' Sanjaya continued, "Then, O descendant of the Kuru clan, Yudhishthira, once again paying his respects, accepted Bhishma's words with a nod. The strong one then made his way to Drona's chariot, passing through the ranks of soldiers who were watching him, joined by his brothers. After saluting Drona and circling him, the king addressed that unbeatable warrior with words meant for his own advantage. Yudhishthira said, 'I seek your counsel, O invincible one, on how I might fight without committing sin, and how I may defeat all my enemies with your blessing, O revered one?' Drona replied, 'If you had come to me without resolve to fight, I would have cursed you, O king, for your absolute defeat. Yet I am pleased and honoured by your approach, O sinless one. I grant you permission to fight and claim victory. Wherever righteousness exists, there is Krishna; wherever Krishna is, there is victory. Go forth and fight, O son of Kunti! Ask me what you wish to know.' Yudhishthira then said, 'O foremost of the righteous, I wish to understand how we can prevail against you in battle, you who are unbeatable.' Drona responded, 'I see no enemy who can slay me while I am fiercely engaged in battle, raining down arrows with fury. Only if I relinquish my arms and retreat into meditation, untouched by the surroundings, will I be vulnerable. This I state as truth. Moreover, I will set aside my weapons in battle if I hear something very disturbing from a trustworthy source.'" Sanjaya continued, "O king, upon hearing the wise words of the son of Bharadwaja and honouring the teacher, Yudhishthira moved toward Saradwat's son. After greeting Kripa and walking around him, Yudhishthira, skilled in speech, addressed the brave warrior with these words. 'With your permission, O teacher, I will fight without committing sin, and with your blessing, O pure one, I will defeat all my enemies.' Kripa replied, 'If you had decided to fight without coming to me, O king, I would have cursed you to assure your downfall. I cannot be defeated, O king. Engage in battle and claim victory. I am pleased by your visit. Each day, I will pray for your success, O monarch. I speak this truthfully.'' Hearing these words from Kripa, the king honoured him and then made his way to meet the ruler of Madra. After greeting Shalya and circling around him, the king spoke to this undefeated warrior, intending to benefit him with his words. 'Yudhishthira said, - 'With your permission, great warrior, I will engage in battle without sinning, and with your blessing, I will conquer my brave enemies.' 'Shalya replied, 'Had you not come to me first to seek counsel, I would have cursed you for your defeat in battle. But I am pleased and honoured by you. So be it as you desire. I give you my permission; go and achieve victory.' 'Sanjaya continued, "After getting the approval of his maternal uncle, the ruler of Madra, Kunti's son, surrounded by his brothers, emerged from the massive army. Then, among all the warriors, the eldest son of Pandu shouted, 'Whoever chooses us, we will choose as our ally!' Looking at them, Yuyutsu spoke these words with a joyful heart to Yudhishthira, 'I will fight for you all against the sons of Dhritarashtra, if you accept me, O king, who is free from sin.'" Yudhishthira replied, 'Come, let's all stand against your foolish brothers. O Yuyutsu, both Vasudeva and I agree— I accept you, mighty warrior. It seems the fate of Dhritarashtra’s line rests on you, as does his legacy. Prince of great glory, accept us as we accept you. The wrathful Duryodhana, with his wicked mind, will be no more.'" Sanjaya continued, 'Yuyutsu then, leaving your sons the Kurus, joined the Pandavas' army, accompanied by the sound of drums and cymbals. King Yudhishthira, strong and joyful, donned his shining golden armour once more. The warriors among men took their positions on their chariots and arranged their troops for battle. They caused hundreds of drums and cymbals to resonate. The mighty warriors roared like lions. Seeing the sons of Pandu, those fierce defenders, on their chariots, the kings on the opposite side, including Dhrishtadyumna, raised cheers of joy. Acknowledging the nobility of the Pandu sons who honoured that worthy of respect, all the present kings praised them highly." The kings conversed about friendship, compassion, and kindness towards kin, shown at the right moments by those noble figures. Their wonderful words spread everywhere, accompanied by praises sung about those legendary men. As a result, everyone present felt drawn to them. The outsiders and the noble ones who saw or heard of the Pandu brothers’ actions wept; their voices thick with emotion. These warriors, filled with great energy, had countless drums and Pushkaras played, and blew their conch shells, shining white as milk.'" |
