आदिपर्व - ādiparva
This Parva commences with the story of the king Janamejaya, the grandson of Pandavas. A sage Utanka advices Janamejaya to embark upon performing Sarpa Yagna or a snake sacrifice, to avenge the death of his Parikshit due to bite of snake Takshaka. When the Sarpa Yagna was at its concluding stage, it was stopped at the intervention of a Saint Astika, the nephew of Snake Vasuki.
Sage Vyasa or Krishna Dwaipayana arrives at the Yagna premises and king Janamejaya requests him to narrate the story of Pandavas and Kauravas. Sage Vyasa directs his disciple Vaisampayana to provide the same to Janamejaya.
Janamejaya narrates the story in brief first and then elaborates. It contains the stories of
· Shantanu and Ganga and the birth of Devavrata or Bhishma
· Marriage of Shantanu with Satyavati and birth of Chitrangada and Vichitravirya
· Death of Chitrangada, marriage of Vichitravirya with Ambika and Ambalika
· Death of Vichitravirya, birth of Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura
· Marriages of Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura
· Curse to Pandu , birth of Pandavas and Kauravas
· Training of Pandavas and Kauravas under Drona
· Attempt to kill Pandavas in Varanavata by Duryodhana, escape of Pandavas
· Eliminating demons Hidimba and Vaka
· Marriage of Pandavas with Draupadi
· Partition of Kingdom and giving half share to Pandavas
· Construction of capital at Indraprastha by Pandavas
· Burning of Khandava Forest
