वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततो द्रुपदमासाद्य भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् । अब्रवीत्पार्षतं राजन्सखायं विद्धि मामिति ॥ 1॥ द्रुपद उवाच॥ अकृतेयं तव प्रज्ञा ब्रह्मन्नातिसमञ्जसी । यन्मां ब्रवीषि प्रसभं सखा तेऽहमिति द्विज ॥ 2॥ न हि राज्ञामुदीर्णानामेवं भूतैर्नरैः क्वचित् । सख्यं भवति मन्दात्मञ्श्रिया हीनैर्धनच्युतैः ॥ 3॥ सौहृदान्यपि जीर्यन्ते कालेन परिजीर्यताम् । सौहृदं मे त्वया ह्यासीत्पूर्वं सामर्थ्यबन्धनम् ॥ 4॥ न सख्यमजरं लोके जातु दृश्येत कर्हिचित् । कामश्चैतन्नाशयति क्रोधो वैनं रहत्युत॥ 5॥ मैवं जीर्णमुपासिष्ठाः सख्यं नवमुपाकुरु । आसीत्सख्यं द्विजश्रेष्ठ त्वया मेऽर्थनिबन्धनम् ॥ 6॥ न दरिद्रो वसुमतो नाविद्वान्विदुषः सखा । शूरस्य न सखा क्लीबः सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते ॥ 7॥ ययोरेव समं वित्तं ययोरेव समं कुलम् । तयोः सख्यं विवाहश्च न तु पुष्टविपुष्टयोः ॥ 8॥ नाश्रोत्रियः श्रोत्रियस्य नारथी रथिनः सखा । नाराज्ञा सङ्गतं राज्ञः सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते ॥ 9॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ द्रुपदेनैवमुक्तस्तु भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् । मुहूर्तं चिन्तयामास मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥ 10॥ स विनिश्चित्य मनसा पाञ्चालं प्रति बुद्धिमान् । जगाम कुरुमुख्यानां नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥ 11॥ कुमारास्त्वथ निष्क्रम्य समेता गजसाह्वयात् । क्रीडन्तो वीटया तत्र वीराः पर्यचरन्मुदा ॥ 12॥ पपात कूपे सा वीटा तेषां वै क्रीडतां तदा । न च ते प्रत्यपद्यन्त कर्म वीटोपलब्धये ॥ 13॥ तेऽपश्यन्ब्राह्मणं श्याममापन्नं पलितं कृशम्। कृत्यवन्तमदूरस्थमग्निहोत्रपुरस्कृतम्॥14 अथ द्रोणः कुमारांस्तान्दृष्ट्वा कृत्यवतस्तदा । प्रहस्य मन्दं पैशल्यादभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान् ॥ 15॥ अहो नु धिग्बलं क्षात्रं धिगेतां वः कृतास्त्रताम् । भरतस्यान्वये जाता ये वीटां नाधिगच्छत ॥ 16॥ एष मुष्टिरिषीकाणां मयास्त्रेणाभिमन्त्रितः । अस्य वीर्यं निरीक्षध्वं यदन्यस्य न विद्यते ॥ 17 वेत्स्यामीषीकया वीटां तामिषीकामथान्यया । तामन्यया समायोगो वीटाया ग्रहणे मम ॥ 18॥ ततो यथोक्तं द्रोणेन तत्सर्वं कृतमञ्जसा॥ तदपश्यन्कुमारास्ते विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनाः 19 आश्चर्यमिदमत्यन्तमिति मत्वा वचोऽब्रुवन्॥ अभिवादयामहे ब्रह्मन्नैतदन्येषु विद्यते ॥20 कोऽसि कं त्वाभिजानीमो वयं किं करवामहे ॥ द्रोण उवाच॥ आचक्षध्वं च भीष्माय रूपेण च गुणैश्च माम् ॥21 स एव सुमहाबुद्धिः साम्प्रतं प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे भीष्ममूचुः पितामहम् ।22 ब्राह्मणस्य वचस्तथ्यं तच्च कर्मविशेषवत् ॥ भीष्मः श्रुत्वा कुमाराणां द्रोणं तं प्रत्यजानत ।23 युक्तरूपः स हि गुरुरित्येवमनुचिन्त्य च ॥ अथैनमानीय तदा स्वयमेव सुसत्कृतम् ।24 परिपप्रच्छ निपुणं भीष्मः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥ हेतुमागमने तस्य द्रोणः सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥ 25 अभ्यागच्छं कुरून्भीष्म शिष्यैरर्थी गुणान्वितैः ॥ प्रतिजग्राह तं भीष्मो गुरुं पाण्डुसुतैः सह ।26 पौत्रानादाय तान्सर्वान्वसूनि विविधानि च ॥ शिष्या इति ददौ राजन्द्रोणाय विधिपूर्वकम् ।27 स च शिष्यान्महेष्वासः प्रतिजग्राह कौरवान् ॥ पाण्डवान्धार्तराष्ट्रांश्च द्रोणो मुदितमानसः॥28 प्रतिगृह्य च तान्सर्वान्द्रोणो वचनमब्रवीत् । रहस्येकः प्रतीतात्मा कृतोपसदनांस्तदा ॥ 29॥ कार्यं मे काङ्क्षितं किञ्चिद्धृदि सम्परिवर्तते । कृतास्त्रैस्तत्प्रदेयं मे तदृतं वदतानघाः ॥ 30॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा कौरवेयास्ते तूष्णीमासन्विशां पते । अर्जुनस्तु ततः सर्वं प्रतिजज्ञे परन्तपः ॥ 31॥ ततोऽर्जुनं मूर्ध्नि तदा समाघ्राय पुनः पुनः । प्रीतिपूर्वं परिष्वज्य प्ररुरोद मुदा तदा ॥ 32॥ ततो द्रोणः पाण्डुपुत्रानस्त्राणि विविधानि च । ग्राहयामास दिव्यानि मानुषाणि च वीर्यवान् ॥ 33॥ राजपुत्रास्तथैवान्ये समेत्य भरतर्षभ । अभिजग्मुस्ततो द्रोणमस्त्रार्थे द्विजसत्तमम् ॥ 34॥ वृष्णयश्चान्धकाश्चैव नानादेश्याश्च पार्थिवाः ॥ ॥ सूतपुत्रश्च राधेयो गुरुं द्रोणमियात्तदा ।35 स्पर्धमानस्तु पार्थेन सूतपुत्रोऽत्यमर्षणः ॥ दुर्योधनं समाश्रित्य सोऽवमन्यत पाण्डवान्॥36 |

Vaisampayana said, 'Then, O king, the powerful son of Bharadyaja came before Drupada and declared to him, 'Consider me your friend.' Drupada replied to Drona, 'O Brahmana, your wisdom is clearly lacking since you suddenly claim friendship with me! Ignorant man, great kings cannot be friends with unfortunate and impoverished beings like you! It’s true we were friends once, as we were both in similar situations. But time, which degrades everything, also erodes friendship. In this world, no friendship truly lasts forever. Time wears it away, and anger can destroy it too. So do not cling to that faded friendship. Forget it. The bond we shared, O foremost of Brahmanas, served a specific purpose. Friendship cannot exist between a poor person and a wealthy one, between an educated man and an uneducated one, between a brave person and a coward. Why do you want to revive our past friendship? Friendship or enmity can only exist among equals in wealth or power. The poor and the rich cannot truly be friends or foes. Someone of low status cannot befriend someone of high status; a non-warrior cannot be a friend to one who is a warrior; and a non-king can never be friends with a king. Therefore, why do you wish to sustain our former friendship?' Upon hearing this from Drupada, the mighty son of Bharadwaja felt furious and, after a moment of thought, resolved on his actions. Recognizing the arrogance of the Panchala king, he decided to put an end to it decisively. Quickly leaving the Panchala capital, Drona headed towards Hastinapura, the capital of the Kurus. One day, the Pandavas and Kauravas, all together, left Hastinapura. Once outside the city, they began playing with a ball, filled with joy. But then, the ball fell into a well, and despite their best efforts, the princes could not retrieve it. At that moment, they noticed an elderly Brahmana nearby, dark-skinned and frail, who had just completed his rituals. Seeing their struggles, the wise Brahmana, who was Drona, smiled slightly and said, 'What a shame for you warriors! Born into the Bharata lineage, yet you can't fetch the ball from this well?' Drona confidently declared, 'With this handful of grass, I can empower it with the strength of weapons through my mantras. Watch as I use this blade to pierce the ball and connect it with another, creating a chain to lift it.' Vaisampayana continued, 'Drona did as he promised, astonishing the princes, who watched in amazement. They exclaimed, 'We honor you, O Brahmana! Your skill is unmatched. Please tell us your name and how we can serve you.' Drona replied, 'Go to Bhishma and describe my appearance and abilities. He will recognize me.' The princes then said, 'So be it,' and went to Bhishma. They told him about the meaning of the Brahmana's words and described his remarkable achievement. After hearing everything from the princes, Bhishma immediately understood that the Brahmana was Drona. Believing he would be the best teacher for the princes, Bhishma went to Drona in person, greeted him warmly, and invited him to the palace. Then, Bhishma, the greatest warrior, skillfully inquired about Drona's reason for coming to Hastinapura. In response, Drona explained everything that had occurred. 'O Bhishma, insulted by Drupada, I am filled with anger. I have come to the Kuru dynasty, seeking intelligent and obedient students. I come to Hastinapura to fulfill your wishes. Please tell me what I should do.' Bhishma, along with his grandsons, the Kaurava princes, presented them to Drona as his students. Drona, the finest archer, happily accepted the Kauravas—children of Pandu and Dhritarashtra—as his pupils. One day, after welcoming them, Drona gathered them and, having them touch his feet, said with a full heart, 'I have a specific purpose in mind. Promise me sincerely, pure ones, that once you become skilled in arms, you will fulfill it.' Hearing this, the Kuru princes were silent, but Arjuna, O king, pledged to achieve it, whatever it may be. Drona then joyfully embraced Arjuna, inhaling the fragrance of his hair with tears of happiness. Drona, endowed with great power, taught the Pandu sons a variety of weapons, both divine and mortal. Additionally, many other princes came to learn from the best of Brahmanas, including the Vrishnis, the Andhakas, and princes from different lands, along with Karna, the adopted son of Radha from the Suta caste, who all became Drona's students. Among them all, the Suta son Karna, filled with jealousy, often challenged Arjuna, and backed by Duryodhana, ignored the Pandavas. |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ अर्जुनस्तु परं यत्नमातस्थे गुरुपूजने । अस्त्रे च परमं योगं प्रियो द्रोणस्य चाभवत् ॥ 1॥ द्रोणेन तु तदाहूय रहस्युक्तोऽन्नसाधकः । अन्धकारेऽर्जुनायान्नं न देयं ते कथञ्चन ॥ 2॥ ततः कदाचिद्भुञ्जाने प्रववौ वायुरर्जुने । तेन तत्र प्रदीपः स दीप्यमानो निवापितः ॥ 3॥ भुङ्क्त एवार्जुनो भक्तं न चास्यास्याद्व्यमुह्यत । हस्तस्तेजस्विनो नित्यमन्नग्रहणकारणात् ॥4 तदभ्यासकृतं मत्वा रात्रावपि स पाण्डवः। योग्यां चक्रे महाबाहुर्धनुषा पाण्डुनन्दनः॥5 द्रोणस्य तु तदा शिष्यौ गदायोग्यां विशेषतः । दुर्योधनश्च भीमश्च कुरूणामभ्यगच्छताम् ॥ 6॥ अश्वत्थामा रहस्येषु सर्वेष्वभ्यधिकोऽभवत् । तथाति पुरुषानन्यान्त्सारुकौ यमजावुभौ ॥ 7॥ युधिष्ठिरो रथश्रेष्ठः सर्वत्र तु धनञ्जयः ॥ 8॥ प्रथितः सागरान्तायां रथयूथपयूथपः । बुद्धियोगबलोत्साहैः सर्वास्त्रेषु च पाण्डवः ॥ 9॥ अस्त्रे गुर्वनुरागे च विशिष्टोऽभवदर्जुनः । तुल्येष्वस्त्रोपदेशेषु सौष्ठवेन च वीर्यवान् ॥ 10॥ एकः सर्वकुमाराणां बभूवातिरथोऽर्जुनः ॥ 11॥ प्राणाधिकं भीमसेनं कृतविद्यं धनञ्जयम् । धार्तराष्ट्रा दुरात्मानो नामृष्यन्त नराधिप ॥ 12॥ तांस्तु सर्वान्समानीय सर्वविद्यासु निष्ठितान् । द्रोणः प्रहरणज्ञाने जिज्ञासुः पुरुषर्षभ ॥ 13॥ कृत्रिमं भासमारोप्य वृक्षाग्रे शिल्पिभिः कृतम् । अविज्ञातं कुमाराणां लक्ष्यभूतमुपादिशत् ॥ 14॥ द्रोण उवाच॥ शीघ्रं भवन्तः सर्वे वै धनूंष्यादाय सत्वराः । भासमेतं समुद्दिश्य तिष्ठन्तां संहितेषवः ॥ 15॥ मद्वाक्यसमकालं च शिरोऽस्य विनिपात्यताम् । एकैकशो नियोक्ष्यामि तथा कुरुत पुत्रकाः ॥ 16॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततो युधिष्ठिरं पूर्वमुवाचाङ्गिरसां वरः । सन्धत्स्व बाणं दुर्धर्ष मद्वाक्यान्ते विमुञ्च च ॥ 17॥ ततो युधिष्ठिरः पूर्वं धनुर्गृह्य महारवम् । तस्थौ भासं समुद्दिश्य गुरुवाक्यप्रचोदितः ॥ 18॥ ततो विततधन्वानं द्रोणस्तं कुरुनन्दनम् । स मुहूर्तादुवाचेदं वचनं भरतर्षभ ॥ 19॥ पश्यस्येनं द्रुमाग्रस्थं भासं नरवरात्मज । पश्यामीत्येवमाचार्यं प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरः ॥ 20॥ स मुहूर्तादिव पुनर्द्रोणस्तं प्रत्यभाषत । अथ वृक्षमिमं मां वा भ्रातृन्वापि प्रपश्यसि ॥ 21॥ तमुवाच स कौन्तेयः पश्याम्येनं वनस्पतिम् । भवन्तं च तथा भ्रातृन्भासं चेति पुनः पुनः ॥ 22॥ तमुवाचापसर्पेति द्रोणोऽप्रीतमना इव । नैतच्छक्यं त्वया वेद्धुं लक्ष्यमित्येव कुत्सयन् ॥ 23॥ ततो दुर्योधनादींस्तान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्महायशाः । तेनैव क्रमयोगेन जिज्ञासुः पर्यपृच्छत ॥ 24॥ अन्यांश्च शिष्यान्भीमादीन्राज्ञश्चैवान्यदेशजान् । तथा च सर्वे सर्वं तत्पश्याम इति कुत्सिताः ॥ 25॥ ततो धनञ्जयं द्रोणः स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत । त्वयेदानीं प्रहर्तव्यमेतल्लक्ष्यं निशम्यताम् ॥ 26॥ मद्वाक्यसमकालं ते मोक्तव्योऽत्र भवेच्छरः । वितत्य कार्मुकं पुत्र तिष्ठ तावन्मुहूर्तकम् ॥ 27॥ एवमुक्तः सव्यसाची मण्डलीकृतकार्मुकः । तस्थौ लक्ष्यं समुद्दिश्य गुरुवाक्यप्रचोदितः ॥ 28॥ मुहूर्तादिव तं द्रोणस्तथैव समभाषत । पश्यस्येनं स्थितं भासं द्रुमं मामपि वेत्युत ॥ 29॥ पश्याम्येनं भासमिति द्रोणं पार्थोऽभ्यभाषत । न तु वृक्षं भवन्तं वा पश्यामीति च भारत ॥ 30॥ ततः प्रीतमना द्रोणो मुहूर्तादिव तं पुनः । प्रत्यभाषत दुर्धर्षः पाण्डवानां रथर्षभम् ॥ 31॥ भासं पश्यसि यद्येनं तथा ब्रूहि पुनर्वचः । शिरः पश्यामि भासस्य न गात्रमिति सोऽब्रवीत् ॥ 32॥ अर्जुनेनैवमुक्तस्तु द्रोणो हृष्टतनूरुहः । मुञ्चस्वेत्यब्रवीत्पार्थं स मुमोचाविचारयन् ॥ 33॥ ततस्तस्य नगस्थस्य क्षुरेण निशितेन ह । शिर उत्कृत्य तरसा पातयामास पाण्डवः ॥ 34॥ तस्मिन्कर्मणि संसिद्धे पर्यश्वजत फल्गुनम् । मेने च द्रुपदं सङ्ख्ये सानुबन्धं पराजितम् ॥35 अथाब्रवीन्महात्मानं भारद्वाजो महारथम् । गृहाणेदं महाबाहो विशिष्टमतिदुर्धरम् ॥ 36॥ अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो नाम सप्रयोगनिवर्तनम् ॥ ॥ न च ते मानुषेष्वेतत्प्रयोक्तव्यं कथञ्चन ।37 जगद्विनिर्दहेदेतदल्पतेजसि पातितम् ॥ ॥ असामान्यमिदं तात लोकेष्वस्त्रं निगद्यते ।38 तद्धारयेथाः प्रयतः शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥ ॥ बाधेतामानुषः शत्रुर्यदा त्वां वीर कश्चन ।39 तद्वधाय प्रयुञ्जीथास्तदास्त्रमिदमाहवे ॥ ॥ तथेति तत्प्रतिश्रुत्य बीभत्सुः स कृताञ्जलिः ।40 जग्राह परमास्त्रं तदाह चैनं पुनर्गुरुः ॥ ॥ भविता त्वत्समो नान्यः पुमाँल्लोके धनुर्धरः ॥41 |

Arjuna, dedicated to mastering weaponry, always stood by his teacher and surpassed all his classmates in skill, strength, and determination. Although everyone received the same teaching, Arjuna's agility and talent made him the best among his peers. Recognizing Arjuna's commitment, Drona privately instructed the cook not to serve him food in the dark, nor mention it to anyone. A few days later, while Arjuna was eating, a gust of wind extinguished the lamp. Nevertheless, Arjuna, accustomed to his routine, continued to eat in the darkness. This made him realize the power of habit, and he resolved to practice archery at night. Two of Drona's students became adept with the mace, Druvodhana and Bhima, though they were often envious of each other. Aswatthaman outshone everyone in martial techniques. The twins, Nakula and Sahadeva, excelled with the sword, while Yudhishthira was unmatched in chariotry. Yet, Arjuna surpassed all in intelligence, adaptability, strength, and determination. Mastering all weapons, he became the greatest chariot fighter, with his renown reaching every corner of the earth. Despite receiving the same instruction, Arjuna stood out for his swiftness and devotion to his teacher, emerging as the top warrior among princes, earning the title of Atiratha, capable of battling sixty thousand foes at once. The wicked sons of Dhritarashtra, seeing Bhimasena full of strength and Arjuna skilled in all weapons, became very envious of them. "One day, Drona, wanting to test the skills of his students in archery, gathered them all together after their training. Before they assembled, he placed a wooden bird in the branches of a nearby tree as the target. When everyone was present, Drona said, 'Quickly take your bows and stand ready to aim at that bird on the tree. Shoot and sever its head when I give the command. Each of you will have your turn, one by one, my children.'" Vaisampayana continued, "Then Drona, the greatest among Angira's sons, first addressed Yudhishthira, saying, 'O unstoppable one, ready your arrow and shoot when I say go.' Yudhishthira took the bow as instructed, aiming at the bird. But Drona, addressing the Kuru prince, said, 'Look, O prince, at the bird in the tree.' Yudhishthira replied, 'I see it.' But then Drona asked, 'What do you see now, O prince? Do you see the tree, me, or your brothers?' Yudhishthira replied, 'I see the tree, myself, my brothers, and the bird.' Drona repeated his question, and Yudhishthira answered the same way each time. Frustrated with Yudhishthira, Drona finally said, 'Step aside. You are not ready to take aim.'' Then Drona repeated the experiment with Duryodhana and the other sons of Dhritarashtra, one after another, as also with his other pupils, Bhima and the rest, including the princes that had come unto him from other lands. But the answer in every case was the same as Yudhishthira's viz., 'We behold the tree, thyself, our fellow-pupils, and the bird.' And reproached by their preceptor, they were all ordered, one after another, to stand apart.'" Vaisampayana said, 'When everyone else had failed, Drona smiled and called Arjuna over, saying, 'You must shoot the target; so focus your gaze on it. Wait for my signal to release the arrow. Now, my son, stand here with your bow and arrow for a moment.' Following his instructor's words, Arjuna aimed at the bird, bow drawn taut. After a moment, Drona asked him, as he had the others, 'Do you see the bird, the tree, and me?' Arjuna replied, 'I see only the bird, neither the tree nor you.' Drona, pleased with Arjuna, then said to the great warrior among the Pandavas, 'If you see the vulture, describe it to me.' Arjuna answered, 'I see just the head of the vulture, not its body.' At this, Drona was filled with joy, his hair standing on end. He then instructed Partha, 'Shoot.' Without hesitation, Arjuna released his arrow, which swiftly severed the vulture's head from its body and sent it crashing to the ground. As soon as this was accomplished, Drona embraced Phalguna, believing that Drupada and his allies had already been defeated in battle. The son of Bharadwaja then spoke to the renowned and powerful warrior Arjuna, saying, 'Take this extremely potent and unmatched weapon known as Brahmasira, along with the techniques for throwing and retrieving it. However, you must never use it against any human enemy, as it could destroy the entire universe if aimed at someone with lesser power. It is said, dear child, that this weapon has no equal across the three realms. So, handle it with great care and heed my words. If ever, brave warrior, a non-human enemy challenges you, you may use it to ensure their defeat in battle.' Vibhatsu vowed to follow these instructions and, with joined hands, accepted the magnificent weapon. The teacher then added, 'No one in the world will ever surpass you as an archer. You will never be defeated by any foe, and your accomplishments will be remarkable.' |
