Vaisampayana went on, "After slaying the Rakshasa, the noble son of Kunti returned to Narayana's hermitage to live there. One day, recalling his brother Arjuna, Yudhishthira gathered all his brothers and Draupadi and said, 'We have enjoyed four peaceful years wandering the woods. Vibhatsu has decided that in the fifth year he will head to the grand cliff Sweta, a mountain of great renown. Arjuna, with unmatched skill, told me he would be away for five years to learn various dance forms.' Having been permitted by his own guru (Chitrasena), and having performed the circumambulation, the pleased and exceedingly joyful Arjuna arrived at Mount Gandhamadana.
Dhananjaya, powerful like Indra and blazing with glory, arrived at the mountain. He first touched the feet of Dhaumya, and immediately after, those of Yudhishthira. He (Arjuna) also saluted the feet of Bhima (Vrikodara), and was in turn saluted by the twin sons of Madri (Nakula and Sahadeva). Then, having met and deeply comforted Draupadi (Krishnaa), he stood humbly by the side of his eldest brother (Yudhishthira). A supreme joy arose among them all upon being reunited with that incomparable hero (Arjuna). And Arjuna (Kirītāmālī), too, beholding them all, rejoiced deeply while showing high honor and praise to King Yudhishthira. After spending a month in Badari, they resumed their journey, retracing their steps to reach Subahu's kingdom, the king of the Kiratas. As they crossed the challenging Himalayan regions and the lands of China, Tukhara, Darada, and all the wealthy Kulinda territories, Subahu, overjoyed to hear that these sons and grandsons of kings had arrive in his realm, eagerly went out to meet them." Then the best of the Kurus greeted him warmly. After meeting King Subahu, they were accompanied by their charioteers led by Visoka, alongside attendants like Indrasena and other kitchen staff. They spent the night comfortably there. The next day, they gathered all the chariots and charioteers, sending Ghatotkacha and his followers away, and went to the king of the mountains near the Yamuna. There, amid towering mountains with waterfalls, grey and orange slopes, and snowy peaks, they discovered the vast Visakhayupa forest, similar to Chitraratha’s, filled with wild boars, various deer, and birds, and made it their home. Passionate about hunting, the sons of Pritha lived peacefully in that forest for a year. When the twelfth year of their forest dwelling came, those noble Kurus, shining with their brilliance and deeply devoted to archery and ascetic practices, joyfully left that forest, reminiscent of Chitraratha, heading toward the desert's edge, eager to settle by the Saraswati River, before making their way to the lake of Dwaitavana. The season that brings an end to the summer, which is pleasant to all living beings—the rainy season—arrived for them while they (Pandavas) were residing right there. Then came the autumn season, crowded with flocks of cranes and swans, with overgrown forest ridges and rivers running with clear water. as soon as the dark fortnight set in immediately after, the Pandavas, along with Dhaumya, their charioteers, and their cooks, set out for the Kamyaka forest. |

Vaisampayana said, “Yudhishthira and his brothers reached the Kamyaka forest, where a group of sages welcomed them warmly and they settled down with Draupadi. While the Pandavas were living there safely, many Brahmanas visited them. One of these Brahmanas said, "Arjuna's close friend—the powerful, self-controlled, and highly intelligent descendant of Sura—will come here soon, because Hari (Krishna) knows you have arrived. He always longs to see you and always looks out for your well-being." Just as the Brahmana said this, Krishna—the greatest of all chariot warriors—appeared, riding a chariot pulled by his horses, Shaivya and Sugriva. The wise Krishna happily stepped down from his chariot and bowed respectfully to the righteous King Yudhishthira and the mighty Bhima, following proper tradition. He then honored their priest Dhaumya, while the twin brothers bowed down to him. Krishna embraced curly-haired Arjuna and spoke comforting words to Draupadi. Seeing his beloved friend Arjuna after such a long time, Krishna, the fierce warrior of the Dasharha tribe, hugged him repeatedly. Then the Pandavas, along with their wife and priests, gathered around and paid their respects to lotus-eyed Krishna. Standing next to Arjuna—the wealthy prince and terror of demons—Krishna looked as magnificent as the great Lord Shiva standing beside his son, Kartikeya. Finally, Arjuna, wearing his crown, told Krishna all about the adventures and trials they had faced in the forest. Arjuna asked, "How are Subhadra and our son, Abhimanyu?" After formally greeting Arjuna and the priest, Krishna sat down with them and spoke highly of King Yudhishthira. He said, "O King, virtue is far better than winning kingdoms; it is truly a spiritual discipline. By staying honest and doing your duty, you have conquered both this world and the next. You studied while fulfilling your religious duties, mastered the science of warfare, earned wealth through proper warrior methods, and performed all traditional rituals. You do not chase sensory pleasures or act out of selfishness, nor do you abandon virtue for greed. This is why you are called the Righteous King. Even with access to kingdoms and luxury, your greatest joys have been charity, truth, spiritual discipline, faith, meditation, tolerance, and patience. When the people of Kuru-jangala saw Draupadi insulted in the assembly hall, who else but you could have tolerated such an illegal and immoral act? Without a doubt, you will soon rule over humanity with great praise, and all your goals will be achieved. We are ready to punish the Kurus the moment your exile agreement ends. Krishna then said to Dhaumya, Bhima, Yudhishthira, the twins, and Draupadi, "How fortunate that, through your blessings, crowned Arjuna has returned after mastering the science of weapons!" Turning to Draupadi, he added, "How fortunate that you are safely reunited with Arjuna. Your sons are dedicated to studying warfare, are well-behaved, and follow the great example of their righteous family. Your father and brothers have offered them kingdoms and lands, but the boys do not care to stay at Drupada's palace or with their maternal uncles. Instead, they moved safely to the land of Anartas, where they love studying warfare. They live in the city of the Vrishnis and love the people there. Subhadra guides them carefully, exactly as you or the respected Queen Kunti would—perhaps even more protectively." "And, Draupadi, the brave Abhimanyu serves as their excellent instructor, constantly teaching your sons how to wield maces, swords, and shields, use missiles, and master chariot driving and horse riding. Whenever your sons go out for outdoor sports, each one is accompanied by a full retinue of chariots, horses, vehicles, and elephants." Krishna then turned to the righteous King Yudhishthira and said, "O King, let the warriors of the Dasharha, Kukura, and Andhaka tribes place themselves under your command and execute your wishes. O leader of men, let the unstoppable army of the Madhus—equipped for war with horsemen, foot soldiers, horses, chariots, and elephants, and led by the plough-wielding Balarama—prepare to do your bidding. O son of Pandu! Send Duryodhana—the vilest and most sinful of men—along with his followers and allies, to the same deathly fate as the lord of Saubha and the son of the Earth (Narakasura). You are welcome to honor the exile agreement made in the assembly hall, King, but let the city of Hastinapur be prepared for your rule once the Dasharha warriors have slaughtered your enemies! After you have traveled freely wherever you wish, freed from your grief and sins, you will return to rule Hastinapur, that famous city in the heart of a beautiful land!" The great King Yudhishthira carefully considered Krishna’s clearly stated strategy. Applauding his words, Yudhishthira joined his palms respectfully and replied to Kesava (Krishna), "O Kesava, without a doubt, you are the ultimate refuge and protector of the Pandavas! When the right time comes, there is no question that you will fulfill everything you have just promised, and even more. As we swore, we must first spend twelve years living in these lonely forests. O Kesava, once we have also completed our required year of living in hiding, the Pandavas will come to you for shelter." Vaisampayana said: “After speaking with them properly, Krishna (Madhusūdana) prepared to get into his chariot and spoke to Draupadi (the daughter of Drupada)." Draupadi, you will live to see Yudhishthira rule the world after the sons of Dhritarashtra are killed and punished for their hostility! The Kuru women who blindly and arrogantly laughed at you when you went into exile will soon find themselves completely helpless and desperate. “ With a reassuring smile, the leader of the Yadavas comforted Draupadi. He then asked the Pandavas to turn back, and set off for his own city in his swift horse-drawn chariot. |

Vaisampayana said, 'And one day there came unto the Pandavas a certain Brahmana, who was well known on earth for his powers of speech. And having conversed with the Pandavas for a while, he went away as pleased him to the court of Dhritarashtra. Received with respect by that chief of the Kurus, the old king, the Brahmana took his seat; and asked by the monarch he began to talk of the sons of Dharma, Pavana, Indra and of the twins. Then, having heard his story, King Dhritarashtra (son of Vichitravirya) was deeply afflicted with pity. With his inner soul struck down by despair, he then spoke, overcome by the heavy breath of his own sighs. “Alas Duryodhana, and Sakuni, and the Suta's son, and Dussasana also of wicked soul, in robbing the Pandavas of their kingdom by means of dice, seem to behold the honey alone without marking the terrible ruin. The gambler Sakuni hath behaved deceitfully towards the son of Pandu, who ever acteth honestly. From affection for my wicked sons I also have acted similarly. Alas, it is owing to this that the hour of destruction hath come for the Kurus!” Hearing those words of Dhritarashtra, Shakuni, seizing the moment and aided by Karna, spoke to Duryodhana, saying, 'Having banished the brave Pandavas through your own skill, O Bharata, rule this earth without a rival, just like the conqueror of Sambhara reigns in heaven! O king, the rulers of the east, south, west, and north are now your vassals! O lord of the land, that radiant Prosperity which once favoured the sons of Pandu now belongs to you and your brothers! This same Prosperity, which just days ago we mourned over Yudhishthira in Indraprastha, is now yours, having been seized from royal Yudhishthira purely by your cleverness. O slayer of foes, all the kings under your rule now wait for your orders, just as they once did under Yudhishthira. O king, the vast goddess Earth, with her seas, mountains, forests, towns, cities, and mines, adorned with woodlands and hills, now belongs to you! Revered by the Brahmanas and honoured by the kings, you shine with brilliance, O king, like the Sun among the gods in the heavens! Surrounded by the Kurus, you dazzle like Yama among the Rudra or Vasava with the Maruts, shining like the Moon among the stars! Therefore, let us go, O king, and see the sons of Pandu—who are now stripped of their fortune, who never followed commands, and who never accepted submission! We have heard, O monarch, that the Pandavas are living by the banks of the Dwaitavana lake, accompanied by many Brahmanas, making the wilderness their home.' Go there, O king, in all your glory, burning the son of Pandu with the sight of your splendor, just as the sun scorches everything with its fierce rays! You are a ruler, while they have lost their power; you are prosperous, while they are poor. Look now, O king, at the sons of Pandu. Let them see you like Yayati, the son of Nahusha, surrounded by a grand entourage and enjoying immense joy. O king, that shining Prosperity, visible to both friends and foes, is truly a blessing! What greater happiness exists than that of someone in fortune gazing at their enemies in misfortune, like a person atop a hill watching another crawling below? O conqueror of kings, the happiness derived from seeing one’s enemies in sorrow surpasses even that gained from riches or kingdom! How joyous will he be who, living in plenty, looks upon Dhananjaya dressed in bark and deer-skins? Let your wife, in her fine garments, witness the mournful Krishna in ragged attire, amplifying his sorrow! Let the daughter of Drupada lament her fate, for the pain she will feel seeing your wife adorned in jewels will far exceed the grief she felt in the great assembly! |

Vaisampayana said, "Upon hearing Karna's words, King Duryodhana felt immense happiness. But soon after, he fell into a deep sadness and said to Karna, 'What you have told me, O Karna, is always in my thoughts. However, I won't be allowed to go to where the Pandavas are living. King Dhritarashtra mourns for those heroes and believes that the sons of Pandu have grown stronger due to their rigorous penances. If the king understands our true intentions, he will never grant us permission, for, O radiant one, our only reason for going to the Dwaitavana forest is to eliminate the Pandavas while they are in exile! You remember what Kshatri (Vidura) told me in your presence and the Shakuni during the dice match! Reflecting on those words and all the sorrow expressed, I can't decide whether to go or not! I would be overjoyed just to see Bhima and Arjuna suffering alongside Krishna in the woods. The delight I would feel from conquering the entire earth pales in comparison to witnessing the sons of Pandu dressed in tree bark and deer skins. What greater joy, O Karna, could there be than seeing Draupadi in tattered rags in the forest?" If King Yudhishthira and Bhima, the sons of Pandu, see me blessed with great wealth, then I will have achieved the ultimate goal of my life! However, I cannot figure out how to reach those woods or gain the king's permission to go there! So, devise a clever plan with Shakuni and Dussasana for us to venture into those woods! I will decide today whether to go or not and will approach the king’s presence tomorrow. When I sit with Bhishma—the finest of the Kurus—you will present any scheme you have developed alongside Shakuni. After hearing Bhishma and the king discuss our journey, I will settle everything by requesting our grandfather’s blessing. All agreed and departed to their quarters. After nightfall, Karna visited the king and smiled as he spoke to Duryodhana, 'I have come up with a plan. Listen closely, O leader of men! Our herds are waiting in the Dwaitavana woods for you! We can go there under the pretext of checking on our cattle stations, as it is customary for kings to inspect them. If we present this reason, your father will surely grant you permission!' While Duryodhana and Karna shared a laugh, Shakuni chimed in, 'This straightforward plan is exactly what I also thought of for our trip! The king will agree to our request or might even send us there himself. Our herds are all waiting in Dwaitavana for you. We can definitely go under the pretext of overseeing our cattle stations!' They all laughed together, shook hands, and with this plan in mind, they set off to meet the chief of Kurus." |
