क्षत्रतेजा ब्रह्मचारी कौमारादपि पाण्डवः ।

तेन संयुगमेष्यन्ति मन्दा विलपतो मम ॥ 1॥

दुर्योधन निवर्तस्व युद्धाद्भरतसत्तम ।

न हि युद्धं प्रशंसन्ति सर्वावस्थमरिंदम ॥ 2॥

अलमर्धं पृथिव्यास्ते सहामात्यस्य जीवितुम् ।

प्रयच्छ पाण्डुपुत्राणां यथोचितमरिंदम ॥ 3॥

एतद्धि कुरवः सर्वे मन्यन्ते धर्मसंहितम् ।

यत्त्वं प्रशान्तिमिच्छेथाः पाण्डुपुत्रैर्महात्मभिः ॥ 4॥

अङ्गेमां समवेक्षस्व पुत्र स्वामेव वाहिनीम् ।

जात एव तव स्रावस्त्वं तु मोहान्न बुध्यसे ॥ 5॥

न ह्यहं युद्धमिच्छामि नैतदिच्छति बाह्लिकः ।

न च भीष्मो न च द्रोणो नाश्वत्थामा न सञ्जयः ॥ 6॥

न सोमदत्तो न शल्यो न कृपो युद्धमिच्छति ।

सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रो जयो भूरिश्रवास्तथा ॥ 7॥

येषु सम्प्रतितिष्ठेयुः कुरवः पीडिताः परैः ।

ते युद्धं नाभिनन्दन्ति तत्तुभ्यं तात रोचताम् ॥ 8॥

न त्वं करोषि कामेन कर्णः कारयिता तव ।

दुःशासनश्च पापात्मा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ॥ 9॥

दुर्योधन उवाच॥

नाहं भवति न द्रोणे नाश्वत्थाम्नि न सञ्जये ।

न विकर्णे न काम्बोजे न कृपे न च बाह्लिके ॥ 10॥

सत्यव्रते पुरुमित्रे भूरिश्रवसि वा पुनः ।

अन्येषु वा तावकेषु भारं कृत्वा समाह्वये ॥ 11॥

अहं च तात कर्णश्च रणयज्ञं वितत्य वै ।

युधिष्ठिरं पशुं कृत्वा दीक्षितौ भरतर्षभ ॥ 12॥

रथो वेदी स्रुवः खड्गो गदा स्रुक्कवचं सदः ।

चातुर्होत्रं च धुर्या मे शरा दर्भा हविर्यशः ॥ 13॥

आत्मयज्ञेन नृपते इष्ट्वा वैवस्वतं रणे ।

विजित्य स्वयमेष्यावो हतामित्रौ श्रिया वृतौ ॥ 14॥

अहं च तात कर्णश्च भ्राता दुःशासनश्च मे ।

एते वयं हनिष्यामः पाण्डवान्समरे त्रयः ॥ 15॥

अहं हि पाण्डवान्हत्वा प्रशास्ता पृथिवीमिमाम् ।

मां वा हत्वा पाण्डुपुत्रा भोक्तारः पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥ 16॥

त्यक्तं मे जीवितं राजन्धनं राज्यं च पार्थिव ।

न जातु पाण्डवैः सार्धं वसेयमहमच्युत ॥ 17॥

यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण मारिष ।

तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥ 18॥

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

सर्वान्वस्तात शोचामि त्यक्तो दुर्योधनो मया ।

ये मन्दमनुयास्यध्वं यान्तं वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥ 19॥

रुरूणामिव यूथेषु व्याघ्राः प्रहरतां वराः ।

वरान्वरान्हनिष्यन्ति समेता युधि पाण्डवाः ॥ 20॥

प्रतीपमिव मे भाति युयुधानेन भारती ।

व्यस्ता सीमन्तिनी त्रस्ता प्रमृष्टा दीर्घबाहुना ॥ 21॥

सम्पूर्णं पूरयन्भूयो बलं पार्थस्य माधवः ।

शैनेयः समरे स्थाता बीजवत्प्रवपञ्शरान् ॥ 22॥

सेनामुखे प्रयुद्धानां भीमसेनो भविष्यति ।

तं सर्वे संश्रयिष्यन्ति प्राकारमकुतोभयम् ॥ 23॥

यदा द्रक्ष्यसि भीमेन कुञ्जरान्विनिपातितान् ।

विशीर्णदन्तान्गिर्याभान्भिन्नकुम्भान्सशोणितान् ॥ 24॥

तानभिप्रेक्ष्य सङ्ग्रामे विशीर्णानिव पर्वतान् ।

भीतो भीमस्य संस्पर्शात्स्मर्तासि वचनस्य मे ॥ 25॥

निर्दग्धं भीमसेनेन सैन्यं हतरथद्विपम् ।

गतिमग्नेरिव प्रेक्ष्य स्मर्तासि वचनस्य मे ॥ 26॥

महद्वो भयमागामि न चेच्छाम्यथ पाण्डवैः ।

गदया भीमसेनेन हताः शममुपैष्यथ ॥ 27॥

महावनमिव छिन्नं यदा द्रक्ष्यसि पातितम् ।

बलं कुरूणां सङ्ग्रामे तदा स्मर्तासि मे वचः ॥ 28॥

Dhritarashtra said, 'Yudhishthira, the son of Pandu, is strong in his warrior spirit and has lived a life of discipline since his youth. Yet, my foolish sons wish to go to war with him, ignoring my sorrow. I urge you, Duryodhana, noble of the Bharata lineage, to abandon this conflict. A war is never something to celebrate, no matter the situation. Half the earth is more than enough for you and your followers. Return to the sons of Pandu what is rightfully theirs. 

All the Kauravas agree it is just that you should seek peace with the honourable sons of Pandu. Consider this carefully, my son, and realize that this army is on a path to your own ruin. You fail to see this because of your foolishness. I do not wish for war, nor do Vahlika, Bhishma, Drona, Aswatthaman, Sanjaya, Somadatta, Salya, Kripa, Satyavrata, Purumitra, or Bhurisravas—none of us desire conflict. In fact, the warriors you will depend on in battle do not support this war. My child, let this understanding be acceptable to you. Alas, you are not pursuing this war willingly; it is Karna, the malevolent Dussasana, and Shakuni, who are steering you toward it.'

Duryodhana declared, 'I challenge the Pandavas to fight, relying solely on myself and Karna, without the help of Drona, Aswatthaman, Sanjaya, Vikarna, Kambhoja, Kripa, Bahlika, Satyavrata, Purumitra, Bhurisravas, or anyone else in your camp. But listen, mighty one, it is only Karna and I who are prepared to make this battle a sacred event, with Yudhishthira as our offering. In this battle, my chariot will be the altar; my sword will serve as the smaller ladle and my mace as the larger one for the offerings; my armour will represent the audience; my four horses will be the officiating priests; my arrows will symbolize the blades of grass; and our honor will be the ghee for the sacrifice. 

O king, as we perform this sacrifice in honor of Yama, with all the elements provided by us, we will emerge victorious, filled with glory after vanquishing our enemies. Three of us—Karana, my brother Dussasana, and I—will defeat the Pandavas. Either I will conquer the Pandavas and rule this Earth, or the sons of Pandu will defeat me and take this land. O king of eternal glory, I would give up my life, my kingdom, my wealth, everything, but I refuse to live alongside the Pandavas. I will not yield to them even a piece of land the size of a needle's tip.' 

"Dhritarashtra said, 'I now forsake Duryodhana for good. Yet, I mourn for all of you kings who will follow this fool into Yama's realm. Like tigers among deer, the mighty sons of Pandu will take down your leading warriors gathered for battle. I fear the Bharata army will be like a defenseless woman, overwhelmed and thrown aside by Yuyudhana with his long arms. Bolstering Yudhishthira's already formidable forces, Sini's son will step onto the battlefield and unleash his arrows like seeds scattered in a field. Bhimasena will position himself at the front lines, and his troops will stand behind him unwavering, like a solid wall. 

Indeed, Duryodhana, when you see elephants as massive as mountains lying defeated, their tusks broken and bodies soaked in blood—when they’re spread out on the battlefield like shattered hills—you will recall my words. When you witness your army of chariots, horses, and elephants consumed by Bhimasena, resembling the aftermath of a terrible inferno, you will remember what I said. If you do not find a way to make peace with the Pandavas, disaster will surely befall you. Slain by Bhimasena and his mace, you will find your peace. And when you see the Kuru forces laid low by Bhima, like a vast forest uprooted, then you will truly remember these words of mine.'

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

देवमानुषयोः शक्त्या तेजसा चैव पाण्डवान् ।

कुरूञ्शक्त्याल्पतरया दुर्योधनमथाब्रवीत् ॥ 1॥

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

दुर्योधनेयं चिन्ता मे शश्वन्नाप्युपशाम्यति ।

सत्यं ह्येतदहं मन्ये प्रत्यक्षं नानुमानतः ॥ 2

आत्मजेषु परं स्नेहं सर्वभूतानि कुर्वते ।

प्रियाणि चैषां कुर्वन्ति यथाशक्ति हितानि च ॥ 3॥

एवमेवोपकर्तॄणां प्रायशो लक्षयामहे ।

इच्छन्ति बहुलं सन्तः प्रतिकर्तुं महत्प्रियम् ॥ 4॥

अग्निः साचिव्यकर्ता स्यात्खाण्डवे तत्कृतं स्मरन् ।

अर्जुनस्यातिभीमेऽस्मिन्कुरुपाण्डुसमागमे ॥ 5॥

जातगृध्याभिपन्नाश्च पाण्डवानामनेकशः ।

धर्मादयो भविष्यन्ति समाहूता दिवौकसः ॥ 6॥

भीष्मद्रोणकृपादीनां भयादशनिसंमितम् ।

रिरक्षिषन्तः संरम्भं गमिष्यन्तीति मे मतिः ॥ 7॥

ते देवसहिताः पार्था न शक्याः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ।

मानुषेण नरव्याघ्रा वीर्यवन्तोऽस्त्रपारगाः ॥ 8॥

दुरासदं यस्य दिव्यं गाण्डीवं धनुरुत्तमम् ।

वारुणौ चाक्षयौ दिव्यौ शरपूर्णौ महेषुधी ॥ 9॥

यमाह भीष्मो द्रोणश्च कृपो द्रौणिस्तथैव च ।

मद्रराजस्तथा शल्यो मध्यस्था ये च मानवाः ॥ 10॥

युद्धायावस्थितं पार्थं पार्थिवैरतिमानुषैः ।

अशक्यं रथशार्दूलं पराजेतुमरिंदमम् ॥ 11॥

क्षिपत्येकेन वेगेन पञ्च बाणशतानि यः ।

सदृशं बाहुवीर्येण कार्तवीर्यस्य पाण्डवम् ॥ 12॥

तमर्जुनं महेष्वासं महेन्द्रोपेन्द्ररक्षितम् ।

निघ्नन्तमिव पश्यामि विमर्देऽस्मिन्महामृधे ॥ 13॥

इत्येवं चिन्तयन्कृत्स्नमहोरात्राणि भारत ।

अनिद्रो निःसुखश्चास्मि कुरूणां शमचिन्तया ॥ 14॥

क्षयोदयोऽयं सुमहान्कुरूणां प्रत्युपस्थितः ।

अस्य चेत्कलहस्यान्तः शमादन्यो न विद्यते ॥ 15॥

शमो मे रोचते नित्यं पार्थैस्तात न विग्रहः ।

कुरुभ्यो हि सदा मन्ये पाण्डवाञ्शक्तिमत्तरान् ॥ 16॥

Finally realizing that the Pandavas possessed both human and divine strength, and knowing that the Kurus were much weaker, Dhritarashtra turned to Duryodhana and said, 'This worry, Duryodhana, weighs heavily on my mind and never leaves me. It feels like I can see it right before my eyes. This feeling isn't just speculation. All living beings have deep affection for their children and try, to the best of their ability, to provide what is good and beneficial for them. We often see this with those who are kind; they naturally wish to repay the kindness they’ve received and to do what pleases their benefactors. Remembering what Agni did for him at Khandava, he will surely aid Arjuna in this fierce battle between the Kurus and the Pandavas. Out of parental love, Dharma and other invoked deities will undoubtedly come to help the Pandavas.' 

I believe that to protect them from Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa, the heavenly beings will become fiercely angry, much like the destructive force of a thunderbolt. The mighty sons of Pritha, skilled and powerful in combat, when joined by these celestial beings, will be beyond the reach of any human warrior. Arjuna, who wields the unrivaled and divine Gandiva bow, and possesses two celestial quivers gifted by Varuna—vast, filled with arrows, and endless—will instill fear even in Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Drona's son, and Salya, the king of the Madras, as well as all fair-minded individuals, for they see him as unbeatable by ordinary kings with superhuman strength. When he is ready for battle, he can shoot five hundred arrows in a single volley, matching Kartavirya's strength.

That great archer, Arjuna, is comparable to Indra or Upendra in power, and I foresee him causing massive devastation in this fierce conflict. O Bharata, thinking about this day and night fills me with worry and I cannot sleep, concerned for the fate of the Kurus. A terrible destruction awaits the Kurus unless we find a peaceful way to resolve this conflict. I advocate for peace with the Pandavas, not war. O child, I believe the Pandavas are stronger than the Kurus.'

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तथा तु पृच्छन्तमतीव पार्था;न्वैचित्रवीर्यं तमचिन्तयित्वा ।

उवाच कर्णो धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रं; प्रहर्षयन्संसदि कौरवाणाम् ॥ 1॥

मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञाय मया यदस्त्रं; रामाद्धृतं ब्रह्मपुरं पुरस्तात् ।

विज्ञाय तेनास्मि तदैवमुक्त;स्तवान्तकालेऽप्रतिभास्यतीति ॥ 2॥

महापराधे ह्यपि संनतेन; महर्षिणाहं गुरुणा च शप्तः ।

शक्तः प्रदग्धुं ह्यपि तिग्मतेजाः; ससागरामप्यवनिं महर्षिः ॥ 3॥

प्रसादितं ह्यस्य मया मनोऽभू;च्छुश्रूषया स्वेन च पौरुषेण ।

ततस्तदस्त्रं मम सावशेषं; तस्मात्समर्थोऽस्मि ममैष भारः ॥ 4॥

निमेषमात्रं तमृषिप्रसाद;मवाप्य पाञ्चालकरूषमत्स्यान् ।

निहत्य पार्थांश्च सपुत्रपौत्राँ;ल्लोकानहं शस्त्रजितान्प्रपत्स्ये ॥ 5॥

पितामहस्तिष्ठतु ते समीपे; द्रोणश्च सर्वे च नरेन्द्रमुख्याः ।

यथाप्रधानेन बलेन यात्वा; पार्थान्हनिष्यामि ममैष भारः ॥ 6॥

एवं ब्रुवाणं तमुवाच भीष्मः; किं कत्थसे कालपरीतबुद्धे ।

न कर्ण जानासि यथा प्रधाने; हते हताः स्युर्धृतराष्ट्रपुत्राः ॥ 7॥

यत्खाण्डवं दाहयता कृतं हि; कृष्णद्वितीयेन धनञ्जयेन ।

श्रुत्वैव तत्कर्म नियन्तुमात्मा; शक्यस्त्वया वै सह बान्धवेन ॥ 8॥

यां चापि शक्तिं त्रिदशाधिपस्ते; ददौ महात्मा भगवान्महेन्द्रः ।

भस्मीकृतां तां पतितां विशीर्णां; चक्राहतां द्रक्ष्यसि केशवेन ॥ 9॥

कर्ण उवाच॥

असंशयं वृष्णिपतिर्यथोक्त;स्तथा च भूयश्च ततो महात्मा ।

अहं यदुक्तः परुषं तु किं चि;त्पितामहस्तस्य फलं शृणोतु ॥ 10॥

न्यस्यामि शस्त्राणि न जातु सङ्ख्ये; पितामहो द्रक्ष्यति मां सभायाम् ।

त्वयि प्रशान्ते तु मम प्रभावं; द्रक्ष्यन्ति सर्वे भुवि भूमिपालाः ॥ 11॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इत्येवमुक्त्वा स महाधनुष्मा;न्हित्वा सभां स्वं भवनं जगाम ।

भीष्मस्तु दुर्योधनमेव राज;न्मध्ये कुरूणां प्रहसन्नुवाच ॥ 12॥

सत्यप्रतिज्ञः किल सूतपुत्र;स्तथा स भारं विषहेत कस्मात् ।

व्यूहं प्रतिव्यूह्य शिरांसि भित्त्वा; लोकक्षयं पश्यत भीमसेनात् ॥ 13॥

आवन्त्यकालिङ्गजयद्रथेषु; वेदिध्वजे तिष्ठति बाह्लिके च ।

अहं हनिष्यामि सदा परेषां; सहस्रशश्चायुतशश्च योधान् ॥ 14॥

यदैव रामे भगवत्यनिन्द्ये; ब्रह्म ब्रुवाणः कृतवांस्तदस्त्रम् ।

तदैव धर्मश्च तपश्च नष्टं; वैकर्तनस्याधमपूरुषस्य ॥ 15॥

Vaisampayana said, 'Ignoring Dhritarashtra, the son of Vichitravirya, who was ready to ask Partha, Karna spoke to the son of Dhritarashtra to uplift the spirits of the gathered Kurus. He revealed, 'Having learned about the deception under which I received the Brahma weapon from Rama long ago, I was warned—when your time comes, you will forget about this weapon. Despite this severe offense, that great sage, my teacher, cursed me lightly. This powerful sage can even consume the entire Earth and its oceans. 

Through my dedication and courage, I won his favor. I still possess that weapon, and my time has not yet come. I am therefore fully prepared to achieve victory. Let me take on this responsibility. With the blessing of that sage, I will swiftly defeat the Panchalas, the Karushas, the Matsyas, and the sons of Pritha along with their descendants, and I will grant you vast regions won by my strength. Let the Grandfather, Drona, and all the kings support you. I will confront the sons of Pritha alongside the leading warriors of my army. This task shall be mine.' 

As Bhishma spoke, he said, 'What do you think, Karna? Your judgment is clouded now that the end is near. Don’t you realize, Karna, that when the leader falls, all the sons of Dhritarashtra will fall too? Having heard of Dhananjaya's great achievement, with Krishna as his only ally, you should calm your mind with your friends and family. The arrow that the great Indra, the chief of the gods, gave you will be shattered and turn to ashes when struck by Kesava’s discus." 

Karna replied, 'Indeed, the chief of the Vrishnis is powerful. I acknowledge that he is even more than that. But let the Grandsire hear the impact of the harsh words he has spoken. I will set down my weapons. From now on, the Grandsire will only see me in court, not in battle. Once you are calm, the rulers of the earth will witness my strength in this world.

"Vaisampayana went on, 'After saying this, the great archer Karna left the court and returned home. But Bhishma, addressing Duryodhana in front of the Kurus and laughing, said, 'How well the son of the charioteer keeps his word! He has repeatedly promised that he would kill countless enemies before the kings of Avanti, Kalinga, Jayadratha, Chediddhaja, and Valhika as they watched. How will he fulfill that promise? Look at the destruction caused by Bhimasena, as he organized his troops and scattered enemies by the thousands. It was in that moment, when Vikartana's son pretended to be a Brahmana to secure that weapon from the pious and virtuous Rama, that he completely lost his honour and spirituality.'.’
