Sabhāparva introduction

 

Maya rakshasa, who was a renowned sculptor in Rakshasa Kingdom and saved by Arjuna during the burning of Khandava Forest, constructs, out of gratitude,  a beautiful Assembly hall for the Pandavas in 14 months.  Thereafter, Yudhisthira proposes to perform Rajasuya Yagna, in order to achieve the title Samrat or emperor among kings, and asks for the advice of Krishna.

After pondering over the pros and cons of the issue, Krishna recommends to Yudhisthira to eliminate Jarasandha, an uncrowned emperor of that period.  Bhima eliminates Jarasandha and the 4 brothers, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva march towards 4 directions and conquer various kingdoms.  Then, Yudhisthira perform Rajasuya Yagna.

Duryodhana, who attends to the Rajasuya Yagna, gets jealous of the prosperity of the Pandavas and puts pressure on his blind father Dhritarashtra to invite Yudhisthira to the game of dice, in which Yudhisthira lacks experience.

Dhritarashtra invites Yudhisthira and other Pandavas to the game of dice.  In accordance with the norms of a king, Yudhisthira does not want reject the offer to the game of dice and attends to it.  He loses everything in the game, making his brothers, himself and even his wife Draupadi as slaves to Kauravas.  Kauravas drag Draupadi, who was in her periods, into the Royal Assembly and humiliates her and Pandavas.  Out of pressure Dhritarashtra gives back everything the Kauravas earned from Pandavas.  However, Yudhisthira was called back again and in the ensued game of dice he loses everything again and was forced to proceed to the Forest for spending 12 years of period there and 1 year to be spent incognito, failing which the Pandavas are supposed to spend another term of 12 years of period in the Forest and 1 year to be spent incognito.
