Rishi Vyasa spoke privately to all the Pandavas, led by Yudhishthira, saying, “The famous princess of Panchala is the wife of you all. Create a rule among yourselves to prevent any discord”. The esteemed Pandavas, upon hearing this from the great Rishi, made a rule in front of the powerful sage. They decided that whenever one of them spent time with Draupadi, any of the other four, who saw him must retreat to the forest for thirteen months. Once the honourable Pandavas had set their leadership among themselves, the wise sage Vyasa, pleased with them, went to his desired destination. Vaisampayana said, 'The Pandavas, having established their rule, continued to live there. With their great strength, they subdued many kings. Krishna became loyal to all five sons of Pritha, who were true lions among men, full of energy. Just as the river Saraswati, adorned with elephants, delights in its flow, Draupadi found great joy with her five heroic husbands, and they too cherished her in return. As a result of the Pandavas' exceptional virtue, the entire Kuru lineage thrived, free from sin and full of happiness. "After some time, O king, certain robbers stole the cattle of a Brahmana. In his fury, the Brahmana rushed to Khandavaprastha and lamented to the Pandavas. He said, 'O Pandavas, from your lands, my cows are being taken by vile thieves! Go after them! Oh, the peaceful Brahmana's sacrificial butter is being snatched by crows! How the jackal invades the empty den of the lion! A king who takes a sixth of the land's produce without protecting his subjects is called the most sinful by the wise. The wealth of a Brahmana is being robbed! Virtue is suffering! Lift me by the hand, O Pandavas, for I am overwhelmed with grief.!" Vaisampayana continued, 'Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti, heard the sorrowful cries of the Brahmana, filled with deep grief. As soon as he heard him, he assured the Brahmana loudly, saying, 'Do not fear!' However, at that moment, the room where the illustrious Pandavas kept their weapons was occupied by Yudhishthira the just alongside Krishna. Therefore, Arjuna found himself unable to enter or to go with the Brahmana alone, despite the Brahmana's repeated pleas. Reflecting on his sorrow, Arjuna thought, 'Oh no, this innocent Brahmana is being robbed! I must surely help him dry his tears. He has come to us, and he is still weeping. If I don't protect him, the king will feel the weight of sin because of my neglect; our lack of righteousness will spread throughout the kingdom, and we will bear a great burden of sin. If I disregard the king and enter that room, I will be acting dishonestly to a king without an enemy. But if I do go into the room, I will risk exile in the woods. Still, I must set aside everything else. I don't care if I sin by ignoring the king. I don't mind if I end up in the wilderness and die there. Moral duty transcends the body and endures after it is gone!' With this determination, Dhananjaya entered the room and spoke with Yudhishthira. Coming out with his bow, he cheerfully told the Brahmana, 'Hurry, O Brahmana, so that the wicked robbers don’t get too far ahead of us. I will go with you and reclaim the wealth that has fallen into the hands of those thieves.' Then, skilled equally in both arms, Dhananjaya, armed with his bow and clad in armor, rode forth in his decorated war chariot to chase the thieves, and with his arrows, he forced them to relinquish their stolen goods. After benefiting the Brahmana by giving him his cows and gaining great honor, the hero returned to the city. Bowing to all the elders and being congratulated by everyone, Partha finally approached Yudhishthira and said, 'Please grant me permission, my lord, to fulfill my vow. By seeing you with Draupadi, I have broken our established rule. Therefore, I must go to the forest, as we agreed.' Upon hearing these painful words, Yudhishthira was filled with sorrow and responded, 'Why!' Shortly after, king Yudhishthira said to his vow-abiding brother Dhananjaya, 'O sinless one, if my opinion holds any weight, listen to me. O hero, I understand why you entered my chamber and did what you believe upset me. But I hold no anger. The younger brother can enter where the elder brother sits with his wife without fault. It is only the elder brother who violates propriety by entering the room where the younger brother is with his wife. So, mighty one, abandon your intention. Follow my advice. Your virtue remains intact. You have not disregarded me.' Hearing this, Arjuna replied, 'I have learned from you that one should not argue when fulfilling their duties. I cannot stray from the truth. Truth is my weapon.' Vaisampayana then added, 'With the king's permission, Arjuna prepared for forest life and went to live there for twelve months'.'" |

Vaisampayana said, 'As the mighty Arjuna, pride of Kuru's lineage, ventured into the forest, learned Brahmins familiar with the Vedas followed him at a respectful distance. Accompanied by these wise scholars, skilled musicians, devoted ascetics, reciters of Puranas, storytellers, celibate devotees, Vanaprasthas, and Brahmins recounting glorious tales, Arjuna made his way through the wilderness. And, O descendant of Bharata, the strongest among them, he beheld many beautiful and colorful forests, lakes, rivers, seas, regions, and waters on his journey. Then, Arjuna, known for his great strength, saw one after another all the holy rivers and places along the western ocean. Vibhatsu reached the sacred site called Prabhasa. When Arjuna arrived in that blissful land, Krishna heard the news of it. Madhava quickly went to visit his friend. Krishna and Arjuna met, embraced each other, and asked how they were doing. Vasudeva asked Arjuna about his journeys, saying, 'Why, O Pandava, are you traveling the earth, visiting all these holy places?' Arjuna shared everything that had occurred. After hearing it all, the mighty hero of the Vrishni clan said, 'This is as it should be.' After enjoying themselves in Prabhasa for a while, Krishna and Arjuna went to the Raivataka mountain to spend some days there. Riding in a golden chariot, the hero set off for Dwaraka, the capital of the Yadavas. Arjuna was warmly welcomed by all the sons of Bhoja, the Vrishnis, and the Andhakas. |

Vaisampayana said, 'O greatest of kings, not long after this, a magnificent festival began on Raivataka mountain, celebrating the Vrishnis and the Andhakas. At the Bhoja festival, the heroes of these tribes generously offered immense wealth to the Brahmanas by the thousands. There was Balarama, freely roaming and cheerful from drink, with his wife Revati and a host of musicians and singers. Ugrasena, the mighty king of the Vrishnis, also arrived with his thousand wives and a chorus of lovely singers. As the grand celebration started, Vasudeva and Partha roamed around, taking in all the sights. While they wandered, they noticed Vasudeva's beautiful daughter, Bhadra, adorned with every kind of ornament, surrounded by her maids. The moment Arjuna saw her, he was struck by desire. Then, O Bharata, that mighty man Krishna, seeing Partha lost in thought, smiled and said, 'What is this? Can the heart of one who roams the forest be stirred by desire? This is my sister, O Partha, and the sister of Sarana. Blessed are you; her name is Bhadra, my father’s cherished daughter. Tell me if your heart is set on her, and I will speak to my father myself.' Arjuna replied, 'She is the daughter of Vasudeva and the sister of Krishna; with such beauty, who wouldn’t be captivated by her? If this sister of yours, from the Vrishni clan, becomes my wife, I will surely achieve success in all that I do. Please, Janardana, tell me what I must do to win her over. I am willing to do whatever it takes.' Vasudeva said, 'O strongest of men, Kshatriyas traditionally have the choice in marriage. But that can be uncertain, Partha, since we do not know this girl's personality. Among brave Kshatriyas, seizing a bride by force is often praised, as the wise have stated. Therefore, Arjuna, take my beautiful sister by force, for we cannot predict what she might choose for herself.' |

Then Arjuna, with Krishna's blessing, set off in his beautifully made gold chariot, fully armoured and armed with a sword, his hands protected by leather gloves, as if he were setting out for a hunt. Meanwhile, Subhadra honored the noble mountain Raivataka, worshipped the gods, received blessings from the Brahmins, and circled the hill before making her way to Dwaravati. Suddenly, Kunti's son, driven by desire, rushed toward the flawless Yadava maiden and forcefully brought her into his chariot. Seeing this, Subhadra's armed attendants cried out and rushed toward Dwaraka. Upon reaching the court, which resembled a gathering of gods, the chief officer and his aides discussed Arjuna's actions. Baladeva exclaimed, 'Foolish men, let the noble Krishna convey his wishes. We should act swiftly on his commands.' Vasudeva then commented, 'Arjuna has not shamed our family; rather, he has brought us greater honor. Who wouldn't want someone like Arjuna as an ally, coming from the illustrious Bharata lineage, the respected Santanu, and the son of Kunti?' Hearing Vasudeva's words, O king, they followed his guidance. When the thirteen months were completed, Arjuna returned to Khandavaprastha. He first greeted the king and then respectfully acknowledged the Brahmanas. The celebrated Bhadra, with her large, slightly reddish eyes, first honoured Kunti, who, filled with love, affectionately smelled Bhadra's head and blessed her. That girl, whose face shone like the full moon, quickly approached Draupadi and said, 'I am your servant!' Draupadi, touched by kindness, stood up and embraced Madhava's sister, saying, 'May your husband have no foes!' Bhadra joyfully replied, 'So be it!' From that moment on, O Janamejaya, the great warriors, the Pandavas, began to live joyfully, and Kunti too found immense happiness. Vaisampayana continued, 'When Kesava, the vanquisher of foes, with his pure heart and lotus-like eyes, learned that the mighty Arjuna had returned to his magnificent city of Indraprastha, he made his way there alongside Rama and other heroes from the Vrishni and Andhaka clans, along with his brothers, sons, and brave warriors bringing wedding gifts. After several days of celebrations, honored by the Kurus, the Vrishni warriors, brimming with energy, finally returned to the city of Dwaravati. And, O Bharata, the noble Vasudeva remained there with Arjuna in the beautiful city of Indraprastha. Then Subhadra, the cherished sister of Kesava, gave birth to an extraordinary son, similar to Puloma's daughter (the queen of heaven) who bore Jayanta. This hero, a fierce adversary of enemies, came to be known as Abhimanyu. This formidable warrior quickly mastered the Vedas and learned the art of combat from his father, becoming skilled in both divine and earthly weapons, spanning four categories and ten types. Draupadi bore five sons from her five husbands, each a heroic figure of immense strength and resilience in battle, like mountains. They were Prativindhya, born of Yudhishthira; Sutasoma from Vrikodara; Srutakarman from Arjuna; Satanika from Nakula; and Srutasena from Sahadeva, each born one year apart. |

Vaisampayana said, "Janardana, who deserves everyone's respect, lived joyfully at Khandavaprastha for a while, receiving love and care from Pritha's sons. One day, he felt the urge to leave Khandavaprastha to visit his father. The mighty one, who commanded the respect of the whole world, then greeted both Yudhishthira and Pritha, bowing his head to Kunti, his father's sister. Revered by Kesava, Pritha affectionately touched his head and embraced him. Govinda then spoke to Arjuna, holding him tightly, and, after honouring Yudhishthira and Bhima, embraced the twins as well. The three elder Pandavas returned his embrace, and the twins greeted him with respect. Then, Krishna, having agreed with them about his return in a fitting manner, and with great effort stopping the Pandavas from pursuing him on foot, happily made his way back to his city Dwaraka, like Indra heading towards Amravati. |

In a gathering with his advisors and those present at his court, who also honoured him in return, the king began a discussion about the grand sacrifice. After much contemplation, this supreme king, the greatest among the Kurus, turned his thoughts towards preparing for the Rajasuya ceremony. This leader, known for his remarkable energy and strength, paused to consider what would be beneficial for all his people. For Yudhishthira, the epitome of virtue, always kind to his subjects, worked for their well-being without favouritism. Truly, setting aside anger and pride, Yudhishthira often declared, 'Give each their due,' and the only words that filled the air were, 'Blessed be Dharma! Blessed be Dharma! Yudhishthira!' Acting in this way, providing fatherly reassurance to everyone, he was loved by all, earning him the name Ajatasatru (one without enemies). Afterward, King Yudhishthira, the finest speaker, gathered his advisors and brothers to repeatedly inquire about the Rajasuya sacrifice. Those ministers, responding to the wise Yudhishthira, expressed weighty words: 'A king, who already rules desires all the qualities of an emperor through this sacrifice that helps in attaining the attributes of Varuna. O prince of the Kuru lineage, your friends believe that you deserve the status of an emperor, and now is the right time for you to perform the Rajasuya sacrifice.' The king, wise and in control of his thoughts, was motivated by a genuine wish to do good in the world. He carefully considered his own strength, resources, timing, and finances, knowing that wise people avoid disaster by making thoughtful choices. Realizing that any sacrifice shouldn't start solely on his own decision, Yudhishthira carried the heavy burden of responsibility and thought of Krishna, the relentless champion of righteousness, as the right person to settle the matter. He recognized Krishna as the greatest of all beings, full of extraordinary power, appearing among humans through sheer will. Reflecting on Krishna's divine accomplishments, the son of Pandu felt assured that nothing was beyond his reach or understanding. Therefore, Yudhishthira, resolved in his thoughts, promptly sent a messenger to that supreme being, offering greetings and words akin to those an elder would send to a younger relative. The messenger, riding swiftly, reached the land of the Yadavas and approached Krishna, who was living in Dwaravati. Upon learning of Yudhishthira's desire to see him, Krishna eagerly wished to meet his cousin. As Krishna swiftly travelled through many lands, driven by his own powerful horses, he reached Indraprastha with Indrasena by his side. Once there, Janardana approached Yudhisthira immediately. Yudhisthira welcomed Krishna with warmth, and Bhima did the same. Janardana then joyfully visited his aunt Kunti, who greeted him with reverence, while the twins honored him as well. He then happily chatted with Arjuna, who was thrilled to see him. After resting in a comfortable room and refreshing himself, Yudhishthira took the opportunity to discuss the Rajasuya sacrifice with him. Yudhishthira said, 'I desire to carry out the Rajasuya sacrifice, but it cannot be achieved merely by wishing for it. You know, Krishna, the necessary steps to make it happen. Only one who can achieve anything, who is honoured everywhere, and who reigns as the king of kings can fulfil this. My friends and advisors have suggested I perform this sacrifice, but I seek your wisdom above all. Some advisors may overlook challenges due to friendship, while others may speak only to further their own interests. Others still prioritize their own benefit over what truly matters. This is how people often advise on significant decisions. But you, Krishna, rise above such motivations. You have mastered both desire and anger. Please guide me in what is most beneficial for the world.' |
