वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततोऽभिषेचनीयेऽह्नि ब्राह्मणा राजभिः सह । अन्तर्वेदीं प्रविविशुः सत्कारार्थं महर्षयः ॥ 1॥ ततो भीष्मोऽब्रवीद्राजन्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् । क्रियतामर्हणं राज्ञां यथार्हमिति भारत ॥ 2॥ आचार्यमृत्विजं चैव संयुक्तं च युधिष्ठिर । स्नातकं च प्रियं चाहुः षडर्घ्यार्हान्नृपं तथा ॥ 3॥ एतानर्हानभिगतानाहुः संवत्सरोषितान् । त इमे कालपूगस्य महतोऽस्मानुपागताः ॥ 4॥ एषामेकैकशो राजन्नर्घ्यमानीयतामिति । अथ चैषां वरिष्ठाय समर्थायोपनीयताम् ॥ 5॥ युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥ कस्मै भवान्मन्यतेऽर्घमेकस्मै कुरुनन्दन । उपनीयमानं युक्तं च तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥ 6॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततो भीष्मः शान्तनवो बुद्ध्या निश्चित्य भारत । वार्ष्णेयं मन्यते कृष्णमर्हणीयतमं भुवि ॥ 7॥ एष ह्येषां समेतानां तेजोबलपराक्रमैः । मध्ये तपन्निवाभाति ज्योतिषामिव भास्करः ॥ 8॥ असूर्यमिव सूर्येण निवातमिव वायुना । भासितं ह्लादितं चैव कृष्णेनेदं सदो हि नः ॥ 9॥ तस्मै भीष्माभ्यनुज्ञातः सहदेवः प्रतापवान् । उपजह्रेऽथ विधिवद्वार्ष्णेयायार्घ्यमुत्तमम् ॥ 10॥ प्रतिजग्राह तत्कृष्णः शास्त्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा । शिशुपालस्तु तां पूजां वासुदेवे न चक्षमे ॥ 11॥ स उपालभ्य भीष्मं च धर्मराजं च संसदि । अपाक्षिपद्वासुदेवं चेदिराजो महाबलः ॥ 12॥ |

Vaisampayana said, on the final day of the sacrifice, when the king was to be blessed with the sacred water, the esteemed Brahmana Rishis, who always deserve respect, along with the invited kings, entered the inner area of the sacrificial grounds together. Then Bhishma, addressing King Yudhisthira the Just, said, "O Bharata, let us offer respect to each of the kings in accordance with their worth. Listen, Yudhisthira, it has been said that the teacher, the priest, the relative, the Snataka, the friend, and the king are six who deserve this respect. The wise say that if any of these stays with someone for a full year, they deserve to be honoured with this offering. These kings have been with us for a while, so let us prepare offerings for each of them. Let us begin by honouring the most distinguished among those present.". "After hearing Bhishma's words, Yudhishthira replied, 'O Grandfather, who do you consider the greatest among us, to whom we should present our offerings? Please tell me.' Vaisampayana continued, 'Then, O Bharata, Bhishma, son of Santanu, discerned through his wisdom that Krishna was the greatest on earth. He declared, 'Just as the sun shines among all bright objects, Krishna stands out among us all due to his strength and valor. Our sacrificial hall is brightened and uplifted by him, just like a sunlit place is awakened by the arrival of sunlight, or a still area is refreshed by a passing breeze.' Thus, instructed by Bhishma, Sahadeva, renowned for his might, presented the first offering to Krishna of the Vrishni clan, using the best ingredients. Krishna accepted it in accordance with the established rites. However, Shisupala could not tolerate the sight of this worship directed at Vasudeva. This powerful king of Chedi, rebuking both Bhishma and Yudhishthira in that assembly, denounced Vasudeva afterward." |

शिशुपाल उवाच॥ नायमर्हति वार्ष्णेयस्तिष्ठत्स्विह महात्मसु । महीपतिषु कौरव्य राजवत्पार्थिवार्हणम् ॥ 1॥ नायं युक्तः समाचारः पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु । यत्कामात्पुण्डरीकाक्षं पाण्डवार्चितवानसि ॥ 2॥ बाला यूयं न जानीध्वं धर्मः सूक्ष्मो हि पाण्डवाः । अयं तत्राभ्यतिक्रान्त आपगेयोऽल्पदर्शनः ॥ 3॥ त्वादृशो धर्मयुक्तो हि कुर्वाणः प्रियकाम्यया । भवत्यभ्यधिकं भीष्मो लोकेष्ववमतः सताम् ॥ 4॥ कथं ह्यराजा दाशार्हो मध्ये सर्वमहीक्षिताम् । अर्हणामर्हति तथा यथा युष्माभिरर्चितः ॥ 5॥ अथ वा मन्यसे कृष्णं स्थविरं भरतर्षभ । वसुदेवे स्थिते वृद्धे कथमर्हति तत्सुतः ॥ 6॥ अथ वा वासुदेवोऽपि प्रियकामोऽनुवृत्तवान् । द्रुपदे तिष्ठति कथं माधवोऽर्हति पूजनम् ॥ 7॥ आचार्यं मन्यसे कृष्णमथ वा कुरुपुङ्गव । द्रोणे तिष्ठति वार्ष्णेयं कस्मादर्चितवानसि ॥ 8॥ ऋत्विजं मन्यसे कृष्णमथ वा कुरुनन्दन । द्वैपायने स्थिते विप्रे कथं कृष्णोऽर्चितस्त्वया ॥ 9॥ नैव ऋत्विङ्न चाचार्यो न राजा मधुसूदनः । अर्चितश्च कुरुश्रेष्ठ किमन्यत्प्रियकाम्यया ॥ 10॥ अथ वाप्यर्चनीयोऽयं युष्माकं मधुसूदनः । किं राजभिरिहानीतैरवमानाय भारत ॥ 11॥ वयं तु न भयादस्य कौन्तेयस्य महात्मनः । प्रयच्छामः करान्सर्वे न लोभान्न च सान्त्वनात् ॥ 12॥ अस्य धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य पार्थिवत्वं चिकीर्षतः । करानस्मै प्रयच्छामः सोऽयमस्मान्न मन्यते ॥ 13॥ किमन्यदवमानाद्धि यदिमं राजसंसदि । अप्राप्तलक्षणं कृष्णमर्घ्येणार्चितवानसि ॥ 14॥ अकस्माद्धर्मपुत्रस्य धर्मात्मेति यशो गतम् । को हि धर्मच्युते पूजामेवं युक्तां प्रयोजयेत् ॥ 15॥ योऽयं वृष्णिकुले जातो राजानं हतवान्पुरा ॥ जरासन्धं महात्मानमन्यायेन दुरात्मवान्॥16 अद्य धर्मात्मता चैव व्यपकृष्टा युधिष्ठिरात् । कृपणत्वं निविष्टं च कृष्णेऽर्घ्यस्य निवेदनात् ॥ 17॥ यदि भीताश्च कौन्तेयाः कृपणाश्च तपस्विनः । ननु त्वयापि बोद्धव्यं यां पूजां माधवोऽर्हति ॥ 18॥ अथ वा कृपणैरेतामुपनीतां जनार्दन । पूजामनर्हः कस्मात्त्वमभ्यनुज्ञातवानसि ॥ 19॥ अयुक्तामात्मनः पूजां त्वं पुनर्बहु मन्यसे । हविषः प्राप्य निष्यन्दं प्राशितुं श्वेव निर्जने ॥ 20॥ न त्वयं पार्थिवेन्द्राणामवमानः प्रयुज्यते । त्वामेव कुरवो व्यक्तं प्रलम्भन्ते जनार्दन ॥ 21॥ क्लीबे दारक्रिया यादृगन्धे वा रूपदर्शनम् । अराज्ञो राजवत्पूजा तथा ते मधुसूदन ॥ 22॥ दृष्टो युधिष्ठिरो राजा दृष्टो भीष्मश्च यादृशः । वासुदेवोऽप्ययं दृष्टः सर्वमेतद्यथातथम् ॥ 23॥ इत्युक्त्वा शिशुपालस्तानुत्थाय परमासनात् । निर्ययौ सदसस्तस्मात्सहितो राजभिस्तदा ॥ 24॥ |

Shisupala said, 'O descendant of the Kuru clan, this man of the Vrishni race does not deserve royal honour like the kings gathered here. O son of Pandu, your choice to honor him with your lotus-like eyes is unworthy of the noble Pandavas. You, sons of Pandu, are still young and do not grasp the true nature of righteousness, which is quite complex. Bhishma, this son of Ganga lacks wisdom and has violated moral principles by advising you so. And, O Bhishma, when a virtuous person like you acts for selfish reasons, he is rightly criticized by the honest and wise. How can he from the Dasarha lineage, who is not even a king, be worshipped before these monarchs, and why have you given him such honour? O pride of the Kuru race, if you consider Krishna as the oldest, Vasudeva is present—how can his son be seen as older? If you see Vasudeva as your supporter, then with Drupada here, how can Madhava deserve the first worship? Or, do you see Krishna as a teacher? With Drona here, how have you honoured him of the Vrishni race? Or, do you view Krishna as a priest? With the aged Dwaipayana around, how could you have favoured Krishna? O Bharata, how is it that you have overlooked him, offering the first worship to Krishna instead? The slayer of Madhu is neither a priest, nor a teacher, nor a king. The fact that you have honoured him despite all this, O leader of the Kurus, must be due to some selfish motives.'. If, O Bharata, you intended to give the first worship to the slayer of Madhu, why were these kings humiliated here? We did not pay tribute to the noble son of Kunti out of fear, greed, or to win his favour. We honoured him purely because he aspired to greatness for noble reasons. And yet, he is the one who insults us. O king, what else could it be, except for a desire to insult, that you worshipped Krishna, who holds no royal symbols, with the Arghya in front of other kings? The reputation for virtue that the son of Dharma has gained is groundless; who would honour someone who has strayed from righteousness? This wretch from the Vrishni clan unjustly killed the noble king Jarasandha. Today, righteousness has been forsaken by Yudhishthira, and only dishonour is shown by him in offering Arghya to Krishna. If the helpless sons of Kunti were frightened and acted out of weakness, you, O Madhava, should have guided them regarding your worthiness for the first worship. Why then, O Janardana, did you accept this undeserved worship from those petty princes? You highly value the worship that is poorly given to you, much like a dog alone enjoying some butter it managed to find. O Janardana, this isn’t an offense to the kings; rather, it is you whom the Kurus have insulted. Truly, O slayer of Madhu, like a wife is to a man without strength, or a show is to a blind person, this royal worship means nothing to you, who are not a king. We have seen what Yudhishthira is, what Bhishma is, and what Vasudeva is. Indeed, they have all been seen as they truly are! After saying this, Shisupala stood up from his prominent seat and, joined by the other kings, left the assembly. |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा शिशुपालमुपाद्रवत् । उवाच चैनं मधुरं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥ 1॥ नेदं युक्तं महीपाल यादृशं वै त्वमुक्तवान् । अधर्मश्च परो राजन्पारुष्यं च निरर्थकम् ॥ 2॥ न हि धर्मं परं जातु नावबुध्येत पार्थिव । भीष्मः शान्तनवस्त्वेनं मावमंस्था अतोऽन्यथा ॥ 3॥ पश्य चेमान्महीपालांस्त्वत्तो वृद्धतमान्बहून् । मृष्यन्ते चार्हणां कृष्णे तद्वत्त्वं क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥4 ततश्चेदिपतेः श्रुत्वा भीष्मः स कटुकं वचः । उवाचेदं वचो राजंश्चेदिराजस्य शृण्वतः ॥ 5॥ इच्छतां किल नामाहं जीवाम्येषां महीक्षिताम् । योऽहं न गणयाम्येतांस्तृणानीव नराधिपान् ॥ 6॥ |

"Vaisampayana said,--Then the king Yudhishthira hastily ran after Sisupala and spoke unto him sweetly and in a conciliating tone the following words,--'O lord of earth, what thou hast said is scarcely proper for thee. O king, it is highly sinful and needlessly cruel. Insult not Bhishma, O king, by saying that he doth not know what virtue is. Behold, these many kings, older than thou art, all approve of the worship offered unto Krishna. It behoveth thee to bear it patiently like them. Hearing these harsh words of the ruler of Chedi, Bhishma, O king, said in the hearing of the king of Chedi,--'Truly am I alive at the pleasure of these rulers of earth. But I do regard these kings as not equal to even a straw.' |

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥ ततः श्रुत्वैव भीष्मस्य चेदिराडुरुविक्रमः । युयुत्सुर्वासुदेवेन वासुदेवमुवाच ह ॥ 1॥ आह्वये त्वां रणं गच्छ मया सार्धं जनार्दन । यावदद्य निहन्मि त्वां सहितं सर्वपाण्डवैः ॥ 2॥ सह त्वया हि मे वध्याः पाण्डवाः कृष्ण सर्वथा । नृपतीन्समतिक्रम्य यैरराजा त्वमर्चितः ॥ 3 ये त्वां दासमराजानं बाल्यादर्चन्ति दुर्मतिम् । अनर्हमर्हवत्कृष्ण वध्यास्त इति मे मतिः ॥ 4॥ इत्युक्त्वा राजशार्दूलस्तस्थौ गर्जन्नमर्षणः ॥ ॥ एवमुक्ते ततः कृष्णो मृदुपूर्वमिदं वचः । उवाच पार्थिवान्सर्वांस्तत्समक्षं च पाण्डवान् ॥ 5॥ एष नः शत्रुरत्यन्तं पार्थिवाः सात्वतीसुतः । सात्वतानां नृशंसात्मा न हितोऽनपकारिणाम् ॥ 6॥ प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरं यातानस्माञ्ज्ञात्वा नृशंसकृत् । अदहद्द्वारकामेष स्वस्रीयः सन्नराधिपाः ॥ 7॥ क्रीडतो भोजराजन्यानेष रैवतके गिरौ । हत्वा बद्ध्वा च तान्सर्वानुपायात्स्वपुरं पुरा ॥ 8॥ सौवीरान्प्रतिपत्तौ च बभ्रोरेष यशस्विनः । भार्यामभ्यहरन्मोहादकामां तामितो गताम् ॥ 9॥ पितृष्वसुः कृते दुःखं सुमहन्मर्षयाम्यहम् । दिष्ट्या त्विदं सर्वराज्ञां संनिधावद्य वर्तते ॥ 10॥ पश्यन्ति हि भवन्तोऽद्य मय्यतीव व्यतिक्रमम् । कृतानि तु परोक्षं मे यानि तानि निबोधत ॥ 11॥ इमं त्वस्य न शक्ष्यामि क्षन्तुमद्य व्यतिक्रमम् । अवलेपाद्वधार्हस्य समग्रे राजमण्डले ॥ 12॥ रुक्मिण्यामस्य मूढस्य प्रार्थनासीन्मुमूर्षतः । न च तां प्राप्तवान्मूढः शूद्रो वेदश्रुतिं यथा ॥ 13॥ एवमादि ततः सर्वे सहितास्ते नराधिपाः । वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा चेदिराजं व्यगर्हयन् ॥ 14॥ ततस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शिशुपालः प्रतापवान् । जहास स्वनवद्धासं प्रहस्येदमुवाच ह ॥ 15॥ मत्पूर्वां रुक्मिणीं कृष्ण संसत्सु परिकीर्तयन् । विशेषतः पार्थिवेषु व्रीडां न कुरुषे कथम् ॥ 16॥ मन्यमानो हि कः सत्सु पुरुषः परिकीर्तयेत् । अन्यपूर्वां स्त्रियं जातु त्वदन्यो मधुसूदन ॥ 17॥ क्षम वा यदि ते श्रद्धा मा वा कृष्ण मम क्षम । क्रुद्धाद्वापि प्रसन्नाद्वा किं मे त्वत्तो भविष्यति ॥ 18॥ तथा ब्रुवत एवास्य भगवान्मधुसूदनः । व्यपाहरच्छिरः क्रुद्धश्चक्रेणामित्रकर्षणः ॥ 19॥ ततः केचिन्महीपाला नाब्रुवंस्तत्र किञ्चन । अतीतवाक्पथे काले प्रेक्षमाणा जनार्दनम् ॥ 20॥ हस्तैर्हस्ताग्रमपरे प्रत्यपीषन्नमर्षिताः । अपरे दशनैरोष्ठानदशन्क्रोधमूर्छिताः ॥ 21॥ रहस्तु केचिद्वार्ष्णेयं प्रशशंसुर्नराधिपाः । केचिदेव तु संरब्धा मध्यस्थास्त्वपरेऽभवन् ॥ 22॥ प्रहृष्टाः केशवं जग्मुः संस्तुवन्तो महर्षयः । ब्राह्मणाश्च महात्मानः पार्थिवाश्च महाबलाः ॥ 23 पाण्डवस्त्वब्रवीद्भ्रातॄन्सत्कारेण महीपतिम् । दमघोषात्मजं वीरं संसाधयत मा चिरम् ॥ ॥ तथा च कृतवन्तस्ते भ्रातुर्वै शासनं तदा ॥ 24॥ चेदीनामाधिपत्ये च पुत्रमस्य महीपतिम् । अभ्यषिञ्चत्तदा पार्थः सह तैर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥25 ततः स कुरुराजस्य क्रतुः सर्वसमृद्धिमान् । यूनां प्रीतिकरो राजन्सम्बभौ विपुलौजसः ॥ 26॥ शान्तविघ्नः सुखारम्भः प्रभूतधनधान्यवान् । अन्नवान्बहुभक्ष्यश्च केशवेन सुरक्षितः ॥ 27॥ समापयामास च तं राजसूयं महाक्रतुम् । ततस्त्ववभृथस्नातं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् । समस्तं पार्थिवं क्षत्रमभिगम्येदमब्रवीत् ॥ 28॥ दिष्ट्या वर्धसि धर्मज्ञ साम्राज्यं प्राप्तवान्विभो । आजमीढाजमीढानां यशः संवर्धितं त्वया ॥ 29 कर्मणैतेन राजेन्द्र धर्मश्च सुमहान्कृतः ॥ आपृच्छामो नरव्याघ्र सर्वकामैः सुपूजिताः ॥ 30॥ स्वराष्ट्राणि गमिष्यामस्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि श्रुत्वा तु वचनं राज्ञां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥31 यथार्हं पूज्य नृपतीन्भ्रातॄन्सर्वानुवाच ह ॥ राजानः सर्व एवैते प्रीत्यास्मान्समुपागताः ॥32 प्रस्थिताः स्वानि राष्ट्राणि मामापृच्छ्य परन्तपाः ॥ तेऽनुव्रजत भद्रं वो विषयान्तं नृपोत्तमान् ॥ 33॥ भ्रातुर्वचनमाज्ञाय पाण्डवा धर्मचारिणः । यथार्हं नृपमुख्यांस्तानेकैकं समनुव्रजन् ॥ 34॥ अन्वगच्छंस्तथैवान्यान्क्षत्रियान्क्षत्रियर्षभाः । एवं सम्पूजितास्ते वै जग्मुर्विप्राश्च सर्वशः ॥ 35॥ गतेषु पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु सर्वेषु भरतर्षभ । युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं वासुदेवः प्रतापवान् ॥ 36॥ आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि द्वारकां कुरुनन्दन । राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं दिष्ट्या त्वं प्राप्तवानसि ॥ 37॥ तमुवाचैवमुक्तस्तु धर्मराण्मधुसूदनम् । तव प्रसादाद्गोविन्द प्राप्तवानस्मि वै क्रतुम् ॥ 38॥ समस्तं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं त्वत्प्रसादाद्वशानुगम् । उपादाय बलिं मुख्यं मामेव समुपस्थितम् ॥ 39॥ न वयं त्वामृते वीर रंस्यामेह कथञ्चन । अवश्यं चापि गन्तव्या त्वया द्वारवती पुरी ॥ 40॥ एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा युधिष्ठिरसहायवान् । अभिगम्याब्रवीत्प्रीतः पृथां पृथुयशा हरिः ॥ 41॥ साम्राज्यं समनुप्राप्ताः पुत्रास्तेऽद्य पितृष्वसः । सिद्धार्था वसुमन्तश्च सा त्वं प्रीतिमवाप्नुहि ॥ 44॥ अनुज्ञातस्त्वया चाहं द्वारकां गन्तुमुत्सहे । सुभद्रां द्रौपदीं चैव सभाजयत केशवः ॥ 45॥ निष्क्रम्यान्तःपुराच्चैव युधिष्ठिरसहायवान् । गते द्वारवतीं कृष्णे सात्वतप्रवरे नृप ॥46 एको दुर्योधनो राजा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ॥ ॥ तस्यां सभायां दिव्यायामूषतुस्तौ नरर्षभौ ॥ 47॥ |

" Vaisampayana said, Hearing Bhishma's words, the powerful ruler of Chedi, eager to fight, addressed Vasudeva and declared, 'O Janardana, I challenge you. Come, let’s battle until I defeat you today alongside all the Pandavas. For, O Krishna, the sons of Pandu, who foolishly worship you—though you are not a king—deserve to perish by my hand along with you. It is my belief, Krishna, that those who have naively worshipped you, despite your unworthiness as a mere servant and no king, merit death at my hands.' After uttering these words, that king, fierce as a tiger, stood roaring in fury. When Sisupala finished, Krishna spoke to all the kings present with the Pandavas, his voice calm yet firm: “O kings, this wicked man, the son of a Satwata woman, is our great enemy. Though we do not wish him harm, he always seeks to bring us down. This scoundrel, hearing we had gone to Pragjyotisha, came and burned down Dwaraka, even though he is my father’s sister's son. While King Bhoja enjoyed himself on Raivataka hill, this man attacked his attendants, killing many and taking them as captives. Driven by malice, he also assaulted the innocent Vabhru’s unwilling wife on her journey from Dwaraka to Sauviras.' I have endured all these troubles for the sake of my aunt. Yet, it is quite fortunate that all this has happened today before the kings. Look at the hostility he shows me. Also, know what he has done to me behind my back. Because of his arrogant pride on display in front of these monarchs, he deserves to be killed by me. I can hardly forgive the wrongs he has done me today. Eager for a quick death, this fool desired Rukmini. But he did not win her, just as a Sudra fails to hear the Vedas.” Vaisampayana continued, 'Hearing Vasudeva’s words, all the kings began to criticize the ruler of Chedi. But the strong Sisupala, hearing this, laughed and said, 'O Krishna, are you not ashamed to declare in this assembly, especially before these kings, that Rukmini (your wife) was desired by me? O slayer of Madhu, who else but you would admit in front of honourable men that your wife was meant for someone else? O Krishna, forgive me if you wish, or don't. But whether you are angry or friendly, what can you do to me?' As Sisupala spoke, the great slayer of Madhu reflected on the discus that humbles the pride of the demonic Asuras. Once the discus was in his grasp, the renowned warrior proclaimed loudly, 'Listen, lords of the earth, to why I have previously pardoned this man. At his mother's request, I allowed him a hundred chances, which was the favour she sought, and which I granted. That number has now been reached. I will now slay him before you, kings.' With that, the leader of the Yadus, master of all foes, in his fury, swiftly severed the head of the ruler of Chedi with his discus. After Krishna killed the king of Chedi, some kings were left speechless, simply staring at Janardana. Others furiously rubbed their palms, and a few, driven mad with anger, bit their lips. Some kings secretly applauded the Vrishni hero, while others became furious, and a few took on the role of peacemakers. The esteemed Rishis praised Kesava with joy and departed. All the noble Brahmanas and powerful kings present felt happy witnessing Krishna’s might and offered their admiration. Yudhishthira then instructed his brothers to quickly perform the respectful funeral rites for the brave king Sisupala, son of Damaghosha. The sons of Pandu followed their brother’s command. Yudhishthira, along with all the kings, then crowned Sisupala’s son as the ruler of the Chedis. Then the sacrifice, O king, organized by the mighty ruler of the Kurus, who was blessed with all forms of prosperity, became remarkably beautiful and appealing to all young men. It began auspiciously, with all obstacles cleared away and abundant wealth, grain, and a variety of food prepared, carefully overseen by Kesava. In due time, Yudhishthira completed the grand sacrifice. All the Kshatriya kings approached the virtuous Yudhishthira, who had bathed after the sacrifice, and said: 'By good fortune, you have succeeded. O righteous one, you have attained the status of emperor. You, of the Ajamida lineage, have brought honour to your entire family. O king among kings, through this action, you have earned great religious merit. You have fulfilled our wishes by worshipping us. We are now eager to return to our kingdoms, and we ask for your permission.' Upon hearing the words of the kings, King Yudhishthira, the just, honoured each as they deserved and instructed his brothers, saying, 'These kings have come to us of their own volition. These great warriors wish to return to their realms, bidding me farewell. Blessings upon you, escort these noble kings to the borders of our land.' Upon hearing their brother's words, the virtuous Pandava princes followed the kings one by one as each deserved, while other noble Kshatriyas followed their peers. Thousands of Brahmanas also departed, having been honoured appropriately. Once all the kings and Brahmins had departed, the mighty Vasudeva turned to Yudhishthira and said, 'O son of the Kuru lineage, with your permission, I too wish to return to Dwaraka. Thanks to your great fortune, you have achieved the greatest of sacrifices—the Rajasuya!' Hearing this, Yudhishthira replied, 'It is through your grace, O Govinda, that I have been able to perform this grand sacrifice. It is also your favor that has brought the entire Kshatriya world here to honor me with their gifts. Without you, O hero, my heart knows no joy. How could I let you leave, O sinless one? But you must go to the city of Dwaraka.' Thus addressed, the virtuous Hari, celebrated across the world, gladly accompanied his cousin to Pritha and said, 'Aunt, your sons have achieved imperial status. They have gained great wealth and triumph. Be pleased with this. At your command, I wish to head to Dwaraka.' After this, Kesava said goodbye to Draupadi and Subhadra. Krishna and Yudhishthira exchanged farewells and returned to their homes. After the leader of the Satwata clan reached Dwaravati, only king Duryodhana and Shakuni, the son of king Suvala—mighty men indeed—remained in that divine assembly hall. |
