तां याज्ञसेनीं परमप्रतीतौ; भिक्षेत्यथावेदयतां नराग्र्यौ ॥ 1॥1

कुटीगता सा त्वनवेक्ष्य पुत्रा;नुवाच भुङ्क्तेति समेत्य सर्वे ।

पश्चात्तु कुन्ती प्रसमीक्ष्य कन्यां; कष्टं मया भाषितमित्युवाच ॥ 2॥

साधर्मभीता हि विलज्जमाना; तां याज्ञसेनीं परमप्रतीताम् ।

पाणौ गृहीत्वोपजगाम कुन्ती; युधिष्ठिरं वाक्यमुवाच चेदम् ॥ 3

इयं हि कन्या द्रुपदस्य राज्ञ;स्तवानुजाभ्यां मयि संनिसृष्टा ।

यथोचितं पुत्र मयापि चोक्तं; समेत्य भुङ्क्तेति नृप प्रमादात् ॥ 4॥

कथं मया नानृतमुक्तमद्य; भवेत्कुरूणामृषभ ब्रवीहि ।

पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतामधर्मो; न चोपवर्तेत नभूतपूर्वः ॥ 5॥

मुहूर्तमात्रं त्वनुचिन्त्य राजा; युधिष्ठिरो मातरमुत्तमौजाः ।

कुन्तीं समाश्वास्य कुरुप्रवीरो; धनञ्जयं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे ॥ 6॥

त्वया जिता पाण्डव याज्ञसेनी; त्वया च तोषिष्यति राजपुत्री ।

प्रज्वाल्यतां हूयतां चापि वह्नि;र्गृहाण पाणिं विधिवत्त्वमस्याः ॥ 7॥

अर्जुन उवाच॥

मा मां नरेन्द्र त्वमधर्मभाजं; कृथा न धर्मो ह्ययमीप्सितोऽन्यैः ।

भवान्निवेश्यः प्रथमं ततोऽयं; भीमो महाबाहुरचिन्त्यकर्मा ॥ 8॥

अहं ततो नकुलोऽनन्तरं मे; माद्रीसुतः सहदेवो जघन्यः ।

वृकोदरोऽहं च यमौ च राज;न्नियं च कन्या भवतः स्म सर्वे ॥ 9॥

एवङ्गते यत्करणीयमत्र; धर्म्यं यशस्यं कुरु तत्प्रचिन्त्य ।

पाञ्चालराजस्य च यत्प्रियं स्या;त्तद्ब्रूहि सर्वे स्म वशे स्थितास्ते ॥ 10॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ते दृष्ट्वा तत्र तिष्ठन्तीं सर्वे कृष्णां यशस्विनीम् ।

सम्प्रेक्ष्यान्योन्यमासीना हृदयैस्तामधारयन् ॥ 11॥

तेषां हि द्रौपदीं दृष्ट्वा सर्वेषाममितौजसाम् ।

सम्प्रमथ्येन्द्रियग्रामं प्रादुरासीन्मनोभवः ॥ 12॥

काम्यं रूपं हि पाञ्चाल्या विधात्रा विहितं स्वयम् ।

बभूवाधिकमन्याभ्यः सर्वभूतमनोहरम् ॥ 13॥

तेषामाकारभावज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।

द्वैपायनवचः कृत्स्नं संस्मरन्वै नरर्षभ ॥ 14॥

अब्रवीत्स हि तान्भ्रातृन्मिथोभेदभयान्नृपः ।

सर्वेषां द्रौपदी भार्या भविष्यति हि नः शुभा ॥ 15॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

भ्रातुर्वचस्तत्प्रसमीक्ष्य सर्वे; ज्येष्ठस्य पाण्डोस्तनयास्तदानीम् ।

तमेवार्थं ध्यायमाना मनोभि;रासां चक्रुरथ तत्रामितौजाः ॥ 16॥

वृष्णिप्रवीरस्तु कुरुप्रवीरा;नाशङ्कमानः सहरौहिणेयः ।

जगाम तां भार्गवकर्मशालां; यत्रासते ते पुरुषप्रवीराः ॥ 17॥

तत्रोपविष्टं पृथुदीर्घबाहुं; ददर्श कृष्णः सहरौहिणेयः ।

अजातशत्रुं परिवार्य तांश्च; उपोपविष्टाञ्ज्वलनप्रकाशान् ॥ 18॥

ततोऽब्रवीद्वासुदेवोऽभिगम्य; कुन्तीसुतं धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठम् ।

कृष्णोऽहमस्मीति निपीड्य पादौ; युधिष्ठिरस्याजमीढस्य राज्ञः ॥ 19॥

तथैव तस्याप्यनु रौहिणेय;स्तौ चापि हृष्टाः कुरवोऽभ्यनन्दन् ।

पितृष्वसुश्चापि यदुप्रवीरा;वगृह्णतां भारतमुख्य पादौ ॥ 20॥

अजातशत्रुश्च कुरुप्रवीरः; पप्रच्छ कृष्णं कुशलं निवेद्य ।

कथं वयं वासुदेव त्वयेह; गूढा वसन्तो विदिताः स्म सर्वे ॥ 21॥

तमब्रवीद्वासुदेवः प्रहस्य; गूढोऽप्यग्निर्ज्ञायत एव राजन् ।

तं विक्रमं पाण्डवेयानतीत्य; कोऽन्यः कर्ता विद्यते मानुषेषु ॥ 22॥

दिष्ट्या तस्मात्पावकात्सम्प्रमुक्ता; यूयं सर्वे पाण्डवाः शत्रुसाहाः ।

दिष्ट्या पापो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः; सहामात्यो न सकामोऽभविष्यत् ॥ 23॥

भद्रं वोऽस्तु निहितं यद्गुहायां; विवर्धध्वं ज्वलन इवेध्यमानः ।

मा वो विद्युः पार्थिवाः केचनेह; यास्यावहे शिबिरायैव तावत् ॥ ॥

सोऽनुज्ञातः पाण्डवेनाव्ययश्रीः; प्रायाच्छीघ्रं बलदेवेन सार्धम् ॥ 24॥

Vaisampayana said, 'Upon returning to the potter's home, the noble sons of Pritha approached their mother. They presented Yajnaseni to her as the gift they had received that day. Kunti, unaware of her sons’ presence, replied, 'Enjoy what you have gained.' But then she saw Krishna and exclaimed, 'Oh no, what have I just said?' Worried about wrongdoing, she thought of how to resolve the situation. Taking cheerful Yajnaseni by the hand, she went to Yudhishthira and said, 'This daughter of King Yajnasena has been offered to me by your younger brothers as a gift, and out of ignorance, I said, 'Enjoy what you have received.' O king, how can I ensure my words remain true, that no sin falls on the daughter of the king of Panchala, and that she feels at ease?' 

Vaisampayana continued, 'Hearing his mother’s plea, the wise and noble Yudhishthira paused to reflect, then comforted Kunti. He turned to Dhananjaya and said, 'You, O Phalguna, have won Yajnaseni. Therefore, it is fitting that you marry her. O you who can face any adversary, perform the sacred rites and take her hand in union.''  Hearing this, Arjuna replied, 'O king, please do not involve me in wrongdoing. Your command does not align with righteousness. That leads only to sin. You should first marry the mighty Bhima, known for his incredible feats, then me, followed by Nakula, and finally Sahadeva, who is full of energy. Both Vrikodara and I, along with the twins and this lovely maiden, await your orders. Given the situation, do what seems best, adhering to virtue, enhancing our reputation, and benefiting the king of Panchala. We are all here to obey you, so command us as you wish.' 

Vaisampayana continued, 'After hearing Jishnu’s respectful words, the Pandavas turned their eyes toward the princess of Panchala, who looked back at them. They exchanged glances, especially at the renowned Krishna, before sitting down to focus solely on Draupadi. The moment these extraordinarily strong princes gazed at her, the God of Desire seized their hearts and overwhelmed their senses. Panchali’s exquisite beauty, crafted by the Creator himself, surpassed that of all other women, enchanting every soul. Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, noticed the thoughts of his younger brothers and remembered Krishna-Dwaipayana’s words. Concerned about potential discord among them, he addressed them all, saying, 'The fortunate Draupadi shall be our shared wife.' 

Vaisampayana continued, 'The sons of Pandu, hearing their elder brother’s words, began to reflect on them with great joy. Krishna, a hero of the Vrishni clan, suspected the five men he had seen at the Swayamvara to be the renowned heroes of the Kuru clan. He arrived, accompanied by his brother Baladeva, at the potter's house where these remarkable men were staying. Upon entering, Krishna and Baladeva saw Yudhishthira, with his long, well-built arms, sitting there, surrounded by his younger brothers, shining like flames around him. Then Vasudeva approached the noble son of Kunti, touched his feet, and said, 'I am Krishna.' Balarama did likewise, coming to Yudhishthira. The Pandavas felt immense joy at the sight of Krishna and Valadeva. Those heroes also touched the feet of Kunti, their father’s sister. Ajatasatru, the leading figure of the Kuru clan, seeing Krishna, inquired about his well-being and asked, 'How, O Vasudeva, did you find us, living in disguise?' 

Vasudeva replied with a smile, 'O king, even if it's hidden, fire can still be recognized. Who else but the Pandavas could show such strength? Brave sons of Pandu, you have narrowly escaped that fierce fire by pure luck. It is only by chance that the wicked son of Dhritarashtra and his advisors have not achieved their goals. May you be blessed! May you thrive like a fire in a cave, gradually expanding and illuminating everything around. But to avoid being recognized by any other kings, let’s return to our tent.' Then, with Yudhishthira's permission, the ever-prosperous Krishna, joined by Valadeva, quickly left the potter's house.

दूत उवाच॥

जन्यार्थमन्नं द्रुपदेन राज्ञा; विवाहहेतोरुपसंस्कृतं च ।

तदाप्नुवध्वं कृतसर्वकार्याः; कृष्णा च तत्रैव चिरं न कार्यम् ॥ 1॥

इमे रथाः काञ्चनपद्मचित्राः; सदश्वयुक्ता वसुधाधिपार्हाः ।

एतान्समारुह्य परैत सर्वे; पाञ्चालराजस्य निवेशनं तत् ॥ 2॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः प्रयाताः कुरुपुङ्गवास्ते; पुरोहितं तं प्रथमं प्रयाप्य ।

आस्थाय यानानि महान्ति तानि; कुन्ती च कृष्णा च सहैव याते ॥ 3॥

तत आहूय पाञ्चाल्यो राजपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।

परिग्रहेण ब्राह्मेण परिगृह्य महाद्युतिः ॥ 4॥

पर्यपृच्छददीनात्मा कुन्तीपुत्रं सुवर्चसम् ।

कथं जानीम भवतः क्षत्रियान्ब्राह्मणानुत ॥ 5

वैश्यान्वा गुणसम्पन्नानुत वा शूद्रयोनिजान् ।

मायामास्थाय वा सिद्धांश्चरतः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥ 6॥

कृष्णाहेतोरनुप्राप्तान्दिवः संदर्शनार्थिनः ।

ब्रवीतु नो भवान्सत्यं संदेहो ह्यत्र नो महान् ॥ 7॥

अपि नः संशयस्यान्ते मनस्तुष्टिरिहाविशेत् ।

अपि नो भागधेयानि शुभानि स्युः परन्तप ॥ 8॥

कामया ब्रूहि सत्यं त्वं सत्यं राजसु शोभते ।

इष्टापूर्तेन च तथा वक्तव्यमनृतं न तु ॥ 9॥

श्रुत्वा ह्यमरसङ्काश तव वाक्यमरिंदम ।

ध्रुवं विवाहकरणमास्थास्यामि विधानतः ॥ 10॥

युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

मा राजन्विमना भूस्त्वं पाञ्चाल्य प्रीतिरस्तु ते ।

ईप्सितस्ते ध्रुवः कामः संवृत्तोऽयमसंशयम् ॥ 11॥

वयं हि क्षत्रिया राजन्पाण्डोः पुत्रा महात्मनः ।

ज्येष्ठं मां विद्धि कौन्तेयं भीमसेनार्जुनाविमौ ॥ 12॥

याभ्यां तव सुता राजन्निर्जिता राजसंसदि ॥ ॥

यमौ तु तत्र राजेन्द्र यत्र कृष्णा प्रतिष्ठिता ।13

व्येतु ते मानसं दुःखं क्षत्रियाः स्मो नरर्षभ ॥ ॥

पद्मिनीव सुतेयं ते ह्रदादन्यं ह्रदं गता ॥ 14॥

इति तथ्यं महाराज सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ।

भवान्हि गुरुरस्माकं परमं च परायणम् ॥ 15॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः स द्रुपदो राजा हर्षव्याकुललोचनः ।

प्रतिवक्तुं तदा युक्तं नाशकत्तं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 16॥

यत्नेन तु स तं हर्षं संनिगृह्य परन्तपः ।

अनुरूपं ततो राजा प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ 17॥

पप्रच्छ चैनं धर्मात्मा यथा ते प्रद्रुताः पुरा ।

स तस्मै सर्वमाचख्यावानुपूर्व्येण पाण्डवः ॥ 18॥

तच्छ्रुत्वा द्रुपदो राजा कुन्तीपुत्रस्य भाषितम् ।

विगर्हयामास तदा धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् ॥ 19॥

आश्वासयामास च तं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।

प्रतिजज्ञे च राज्याय द्रुपदो वदतां वरः ॥ 20॥

ततः कुन्ती च कृष्णा च भीमसेनार्जुनावपि ।

यमौ च राज्ञा संदिष्टौ विविशुर्भवनं महत् ॥ 21॥

तत्र ते न्यवसन्राजन्यज्ञसेनेन पूजिताः ।

प्रत्याश्वस्तांस्ततो राजा सह पुत्रैरुवाच तान् ॥ 22॥

गृह्णातु विधिवत्पाणिमद्यैव कुरुनन्दनः ।

पुण्येऽहनि महाबाहुरर्जुनः कुरुतां क्षणम् ॥ 23॥

ततस्तमब्रवीद्राजा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।

ममापि दारसम्बन्धः कार्यस्तावद्विशां पते ॥ 24॥

द्रुपद उवाच॥

भवान्वा विधिवत्पाणिं गृह्णातु दुहितुर्मम ।

यस्य वा मन्यसे वीर तस्य कृष्णामुपादिश ॥ 25॥

युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

सर्वेषां द्रौपदी राजन्महिषी नो भविष्यति ।

एवं हि व्याहृतं पूर्वं मम मात्रा विशां पते ॥ 26॥

अहं चाप्यनिविष्टो वै भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ।

पार्थेन विजिता चैषा रत्नभूता च ते सुता ॥ 27॥

एष नः समयो राजन्रत्नस्य सहभोजनम् ।

न च तं हातुमिच्छामः समयं राजसत्तम ॥ 28॥

सर्वेषां धर्मतः कृष्णा महिषी नो भविष्यति ।

आनुपूर्व्येण सर्वेषां गृह्णातु ज्वलने करम् ॥ 29॥

द्रुपद उवाच॥

एकस्य बह्व्यो विहिता महिष्यः कुरुनन्दन ।

नैकस्या बहवः पुंसो विधीयन्ते कदाचन ॥ 30॥

लोकवेदविरुद्धं त्वं नाधर्मं धार्मिकः शुचिः ।

कर्तुमर्हसि कौन्तेय कस्मात्ते बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥ 31॥

युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

सूक्ष्मो धर्मो महाराज नास्य विद्मो वयं गतिम् ।

पूर्वेषामानुपूर्व्येण यातं वर्त्मानुयामहे ॥ 32॥

न मे वागनृतं प्राह नाधर्मे धीयते मतिः ।

एवं चैव वदत्यम्बा मम चैव मनोगतम् ॥ 33॥

एष धर्मो ध्रुवो राजंश्चरैनमविचारयन् ।

मा च तेऽत्र विशङ्का भूत्कथञ्चिदपि पार्थिव ॥ 34॥

द्रुपद उवाच॥

त्वं च कुन्ती च कौन्तेय धृष्टद्युम्नश्च मे सुतः ।

कथयन्त्वितिकर्तव्यं श्वः काले करवामहे ॥ 35॥

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ते समेत्य ततः सर्वे कथयन्ति स्म भारत ।

अथ द्वैपायनो राजन्नभ्यागच्छद्यदृच्छया ॥ 36॥

'The messenger announced, 'King Drupada has prepared a splendid feast for the groom's party in honor of his daughter's wedding. Join us there after completing your daily rituals. Krishna's wedding will be celebrated there. Don’t delay. These chariots, decorated with golden lotus flowers and pulled by noble horses, are fit for kings. Ride in them and come to the home of the king of the Panchalas.' Then Vaisampayana continued, 'The mighty Kurus, helping Kunti and Krishna to ride together in one of those chariots, climbed aboard the magnificent vehicles and made their way to Drupada’s palace. 

The esteemed king of Panchala, addressing prince Yudhishthira respectfully, cheerfully asked the renowned son of Kunti, 'Are you to be known as Kshatriyas, or Brahmanas? Or are you divine beings disguised as Brahmanas, roaming the earth to seek Krishna’s hand? Please, share the truth with us, as our doubts linger! We will rejoice once our uncertainties are cleared. O conqueror of foes, have the fates smiled upon us? Be honest with us! Truth is more worthy for kings than sacrifices or offerings. So, do not speak falsely. O you who radiate celestial beauty, once I hear your answer, I will prepare for my daughter’s wedding according to your status.'' 

Upon hearing Drupada's words, Yudhishthira replied, 'Do not be sad, O king; let happiness fill your heart! Your long-held wish has truly come true. We are Kshatriyas, O king, the sons of the renowned Pandu. I am the eldest son of Kunti, and these are my brothers Bhima and Arjuna. It was through them that your daughter was won among the gathering of kings. The twins, Nakula and Sahadeva, along with Kunti, wait where Krishna is. O distinguished man, push away your grief, for we are Kshatriyas. Your daughter has merely been moved from one lake to another like a lotus. You are our respected leader and safe haven. This is the complete truth I share with you.' 

Vaisampayana continued, 'After hearing these words, King Drupada felt an overwhelming joy and his eyes shone with delight. For a moment, he struggled to respond to Yudhishthira due to his overwhelming emotions. Finally, gathering himself, he asked Yudhishthira how the Pandavas had escaped from Varanavata. Yudhishthira shared every detail about their narrow escape from the burning palace. After listening, King Drupada criticized Dhritarashtra, the ruler of men, and assured Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, of his support. This eloquent king then vowed to restore Yudhishthira to his rightful throne.' 

Then Kunti, Krishna, Bhima, Arjuna, and the twins, under the king's command, settled there and were treated with respect by Yajnasena. King Drupada, reassured by the events, approached Yudhishthira and said, 'O strong-armed one, let Kuru’s prince Arjuna take my daughter's hand today in a proper ceremony, and let him perform the traditional marriage rites.'

Vaisampayana continued, 'Hearing Drupada’s words, the righteous king Yudhishthira replied, 'O great king, I too must marry.' Drupada responded, 'If you wish, you may take my daughter’s hand yourself and perform the rites. Or, you can marry Krishna to whichever of your brothers you like.' Yudhishthira replied, 'Your daughter, O king, will be the common wife of us all! Our mother has decreed it should be so. I remain unmarried, as does Bhima among the sons of Pandu. Arjuna has won this precious daughter. It is our custom to equally share whatever treasure we acquire. O noble king, we cannot forsake this tradition. Therefore, Krishna will be the wife of us all. Let her take our hands, one by one, before the sacred fire.'' 

'Drupada replied, 'Oh descendant of Kuru, it is established that one man can have many wives. But it is rare to hear of a woman having multiple husbands! Oh son of Kunti, being wise and aware of moral principles, you should not engage in actions that are sinful and against tradition and the Vedas. Why, dear prince, has your thinking become clouded?' Yudhishthira responded, 'Oh king, morality is complex and we cannot fully understand it. Let us follow the paths laid down by the great figures of the past. I have never spoken a lie, nor have I desired wrongdoing. 

This is my mother’s command, and my heart agrees with it. Thus, king, this is in line with virtue. Follow this path without hesitation. Do not worry about this issue, dear king.' Drupada then said, 'Oh son of Kunti, you and my son Dhrishtadyumna must discuss what should be done. Share the outcome of your talks with me, and tomorrow I will proceed accordingly.' Then, O Bharata, Vaisampayana continued, 'Yudhishthira, Kunti, and Dhrishtadyumna deliberated on the matter. Just then, Vyasa, the island-born, arrived during his travels.'"

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततस्ते पाण्डवाः सर्वे पाञ्चाल्यश्च महायशाः ।

प्रत्युत्थाय महात्मानं कृष्णं दृष्ट्वाभ्यपूजयन् ॥ 1॥

प्रतिनन्द्य स तान्सर्वान्पृष्ट्वा कुशलमन्ततः ।

आसने काञ्चने शुभ्रे निषसाद महामनाः ॥ 2॥

अनुज्ञातास्तु ते सर्वे कृष्णेनामिततेजसा ।

आसनेषु महार्हेषु निषेदुर्द्विपदां वराः ॥ 3॥

ततो मुहूर्तान्मधुरां वाणीमुच्चार्य पार्षतः ।

पप्रच्छ तं महात्मानं द्रौपद्यर्थे विशां पतिः ॥ 4॥

कथमेका बहूनां स्यान्न च स्याद्धर्मसङ्करः ।

एतन्नो भगवान्सर्वं प्रब्रवीतु यथातथम् ॥ 5॥

युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

गुरोश्च वचनं प्राहुर्धर्मं धर्मज्ञसत्तम ।

गुरूणां चैव सर्वेषां जनित्री परमो गुरुः ॥ 6॥

सा चाप्युक्तवती वाचं भैक्षवद्भुज्यतामिति ।

तस्मादेतदहं मन्ये धर्मं द्विजवरोत्तम ॥ 7॥

कुन्त्युवाच॥

एवमेतद्यथाहायं धर्मचारी युधिष्ठिरः ।

अनृतान्मे भयं तीव्रं मुच्येयमनृतात्कथम् ॥ 8॥

व्यास उवाच॥

अनृतान्मोक्ष्यसे भद्रे धर्मश्चैष सनातनः ।

न तु वक्ष्यामि सर्वेषां पाञ्चाल शृणु मे स्वयम् ॥ 9॥

यथायं विहितो धर्मो यतश्चायं सनातनः ।

यथा च प्राह कौन्तेयस्तथा धर्मो न संशयः ॥ 10॥

पुरोहितेनाग्निसमानवर्चसा; सहैव धौम्येन यथाविधि प्रभो ।

क्रमेण सर्वे विविशुश्च तत्सदो; महर्षभा गोष्ठमिवाभिनन्दिनः ॥ 11॥

ततः समाधाय स वेदपारगो; जुहाव मन्त्रैर्ज्वलितं हुताशनम् ।

युधिष्ठिरं चाप्युपनीय मन्त्रवि;न्नियोजयामास सहैव कृष्णया ॥ 12॥

प्रदक्षिणं तौ प्रगृहीतपाणी; समानयामास स वेदपारगः ।

ततोऽभ्यनुज्ञाय तमाजिशोभिनं; पुरोहितो राजगृहाद्विनिर्ययौ ॥ 13॥

क्रमेण चानेन नराधिपात्मजा; वरस्त्रियास्ते जगृहुस्तदा करम् ।

अहन्यहन्युत्तमरूपधारिणो; महारथाः कौरववंशवर्धनाः ॥ 14॥

कृते विवाहे द्रुपदो धनं ददौ; महारथेभ्यो बहुरूपमुत्तमम् ।

शतं रथानां वरहेमभूषिणां; चतुर्युजां हेमखलीनमालिनाम् ॥ 15॥

शतं गजानामभिपद्मिनां तथा; शतं गिरीणामिव हेमशृङ्गिणाम् ।

तथैव दासीशतमग्र्ययौवनं; महार्हवेषाभरणाम्बरस्रजम् ॥ 16॥

पृथक्पृथक्चैव दशायुतान्वितं; धनं ददौ सौमकिरग्निसाक्षिकम् ।

तथैव वस्त्राणि च भूषणानि; प्रभावयुक्तानि महाधनानि ॥ 17॥

कृते विवाहे च ततः स्म पाण्डवाः; प्रभूतरत्नामुपलभ्य तां श्रियम् ।

विजह्रुरिन्द्रप्रतिमा महाबलाः; पुरे तु पाञ्चालनृपस्य तस्य ह ॥18

Vaisampayana said, 'Then all the Pandavas, the esteemed king of the Panchalas, and everyone present stood up and respectfully greeted the revered sage Krishna (Dwaipayana). The noble sage returned their greetings, inquired about their well-being, and took a seat on a golden carpet. Following Krishna (Dwaipayana), who was filled with boundless energy, these distinguished men took their places on fine seats. Shortly after, O king, the son of Prishata asked the esteemed sage about his daughter's wedding in gentle tones. He asked, 'How, O wise one, can one woman have many husbands without being stained by sin? Please, share the truth with me about this.' 

Yudhishthira then replied, 'My words are never false, and my heart does not lean towards wrongdoing. When my heart approves, it can never be wrong. O highest among those who understand virtue, it is said that obeying superiors is always commendable. Of all superiors, the mother is the most esteemed. She has commanded that we share Draupadi as we would any gift received. This is why I view this act as righteous.' Kunti then remarked, 'The act is indeed as the virtuous Yudhishthira has stated. I fear, O Brahmana, that I might speak falsely. How can I ensure that I do not stray into untruth?' 

Vyasa said, 'O dear one, how will you escape the consequences of falsehood? This is the essence of eternal virtue! I will not speak of this in front of everyone, O king of the Panchalas. Only you shall hear me explain how this tradition was established and why it is regarded as timeless and sacred. There is no doubt that what Yudhishthira has said aligns perfectly with virtue.' 

Then, the princes of the Kuru lineage, youthful and adorned with earrings, dressed in fine robes and scented with sandalwood, had bathed and performed their religious rituals.

Accompanied by their priest Dhaumya, glowing like fire, they entered the wedding hall one by one, their spirits high, much like powerful bulls entering a pen. Dhaumya, skilled in the Vedas, lit the sacred fire and poured clarified butter into the flames, chanting the appropriate mantras. Calling Yudhishthira over, Dhaumya used his mantras to unite him with Krishna. As they circled the fire, the bridegroom and bride joined hands. Once their union was complete, Dhaumya took his leave from Yudhishthira, the valiant warrior, and departed the palace. The esteemed warriors of the Kuru line, clad in splendid attire, took the hand of that best of women day by day, assisted by the priest. After the ceremonies concluded, King Drupada presented the mighty warriors with various kinds of valuable gifts.

The king bestowed upon them one hundred chariots adorned with golden standards, each pulled by four horses with golden bridles. He also provided a hundred elephants, each marked with auspicious symbols on their foreheads and faces, resembling a hundred mountains capped with gold. Furthermore, he gave them a hundred young female servants, all in their prime, dressed in fine garments and jewels, with floral crowns. The illustrious monarch of the Lunar lineage presented each of those princely figures, while the sacred fire bore witness to his generosity, with vast wealth, along with many luxurious robes and magnificent ornaments.
