पाण्डुरुवाच।

पितृदेवर्शिमनुजै: देयम् तेभ्य्श्च धर्मत:

एतेभ्यस्तु यथाकालं यो न मुच्येत धर्मवित्।1

न तस्य लोकाः सन्तीति तता लोकविदो विदुः॥

यज्ञेन देवान्प्रीणाति स्वाध्यायात्तपसा ऋषीन्।2

पुत्रैः श्राद्धैरपि पितॄनानृशंस्येन मानवान्॥

ऋषिदेवमनुष्याणामृणान्मुक्तोऽस्मि धर्मतः।3

पितॄणां तु न मुक्तोऽस्मि तच्च तेभ्यो विशिष्यते॥

सोऽब्रवीद्विजने कुन्तीं धर्मपत्नीं यशस्विनीम्।4

अपत्योत्पादने यत्नमापदि त्वं समर्थय॥

अपत्यं नाम लोकेषु प्रतिष्ठा धर्मसंहिता।5

इति कुन्ति विदुर्धीराः शाश्वतं धर्मवादिनः॥

इष्टं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं नियमश्च स्वनुष्ठितः।6

सर्वमेवानपत्यस्य न पावनमिहोच्यते॥

सोऽहमेवं विदित्वैतत्प्रपश्यामि शुचिस्मिते।7

अनपत्यः शुभाँल्लोकान्नप्राप्स्यामीति चिन्तयन्॥

मृगाभिशापं जानासि विजने मम केवलम्।8

नृशंसकर्मणा कृत्स्नं यथा ह्युपहतं तथा॥)

इमे वै बन्धुदायादाः षट् पुत्रा धर्मदर्शने।9

षडेवाबन्धुदायादाः पुत्रास्ताञ्छृणु मे पृथे॥

स्वयंजातः प्रणीतश्च परिक्रीतश्च यः सुतः।10

पौनर्भवश्च कानीनः स्वैरिण्यां यश्च जायते॥

दत्तः क्रीतः कृत्रिमश्च उपगच्छेत्स्वयं च यः।11

सहोढो ज्ञातिरेताश्च हीनयोनिधृतश्च यः॥

पूर्वपूर्वतमाभावं मत्त्वा लिप्सेत वै सुतम्।12

उत्तमाद्देवरात्पुंसः काङ्क्षन्ते पुत्रमापदि॥

अपत्यं धर्मफलदं श्रेष्ठं विन्दन्ति मानवाः।13

आत्मशुक्रादपि पृथे मनुः स्वायंभुवोऽब्रवीत्॥14

तस्मात्प्रहेष्याम्यद्य त्वां हीनः प्रजननात्स्वयम्॥

सदृशाच्छ्रेयसो वा त्वं विद्ध्यपत्यं यशस्विनि।15

Pandu said to Kunti, 'They say that those without sons cannot enter heaven. I am without a son! In my suffering, I speak to you! I am burdened because I have not fulfilled the responsibilities I owe to my ancestors. It’s clear that when I die, my ancestors will also vanish! People come into this world with four debts: to their ancestors, the gods, the sages, and fellow humans. These debts must be paid. The wise say there are no heavenly rewards for those who neglect these debts. The gods are pleased with sacrifices, the sages with study, meditation, and self-discipline, the ancestors through having children and performing rites, and other people through living kindly and without harming others. I have fulfilled my duties to the sages, the gods, and other people. But those beyond these will surely perish when my body decays! I have not yet cleared the debt I owe to my ancestors. 

'Now, strive to have children during this challenging time. The wise say that a son brings honor in the three worlds. They believe that sacrifices, charitable acts, ascetic practices, and observed vows offer no spiritual benefit to a man without sons. Oh, you with the gentle smile, knowing all this, I know that without a son, I will not find true happiness. Oh, how wretched I am, plagued by my cruel actions, and because of my sinful life, I have lost my ability to father children due to the curse of the deer. 

The scriptures describe six types of sons who are heirs and relatives, and another six who are relatives but not heirs. Let me explain them now, O Pritha. They are: 1. A son born from one's own wife; 2. A son born to one's wife by a noble man out of kindness; 3. A son born to one's wife for a fee; 4. A son born to the wife after the husband has died; 5. A son born to an unmarried woman; 6. A son born of an unfaithful wife; 7. An adopted son; 8. A son purchased; 9. A son who gives himself; 10. A son received with a pregnant bride; 11. A nephew; and 12. A son born to a wife of a lower caste. 

If the first type of son is lacking, the mother should seek a child from the next type. In hard times, men may seek to have children from capable younger brothers. Manu, the self-born, said that those unable to have legitimate children may have sons from their wives through others, as sons bring great religious merit. Therefore, O Kunti, since I cannot father children, I urge you to have good offspring through someone who is equal or better than me.

पाण्डुरुवाच।

धर्ममेवं जनाः सन्तः पुराणं परिचक्षते।

भर्ता भार्यां राजपुत्रि धर्म्यं वाऽधर्म्यमेव वा॥ 1

यद्ब्रूयात्तत्तथा कार्यमिति वेदविदो विदुः।

विशेषतः पुत्रगृद्धी हीनः प्रजननात्स्वयम्॥ 2

यथाऽहमनवद्याङ्गि पुत्रदर्शनलालसः।

अयं रक्ताङ्गुलिनखः पद्मपत्रनिभः शुभे॥ 3

प्रसादनार्थं सुश्रोणि शिरस्यभ्युद्यतोऽञ्जलिः।

मन्नियोगात्सुकेशान्ते द्विजातेस्तपसाऽधिकात्॥ 4

पुत्रान्गुणसमायुक्तानुत्पादयितुमर्हसि।

त्वत्कृतेऽहं पृथुश्रोणि गच्छेयं पुत्रिणां गतिम्॥ 5

वैशम्पायन उवाच।

एवमुक्ता ततः कुन्ती पाण्डुं परपुरञ्जयम्।

प्रत्युवाच वरारोहा भर्तुः प्रियहिते रता॥ 6

पितृवेश्मन्यहं बाला नियुक्ताऽतिथिपूजने।

उग्रं पर्यचरं तत्र ब्राह्मणं संशितव्रतम्॥ 7

निगूढनिश्चयं धर्मे यं तं दुर्वाससं विदुः।

तमहं संशितात्मानं सर्वयत्नैरतोषयम्॥ 8

स मेऽभिचारसंयुक्तमाचष्ट भगवान्वरम्।

मन्त्रं त्विमं च मे प्रादादब्रवीच्चैव मामिदम्॥ 9

यं यं देवं त्वमेतेन मन्त्रेणावाहयिष्यसि।

अकामो वा सकामो वा वशं ते समुपैष्यति॥ 10

तस्य तस्य प्रसादात्ते राज्ञि पुत्रो भविष्यति।

इत्युक्ताऽहं तदा तेन पितृवेश्मनि भारत॥ 11

ब्राह्मणस्य वचस्तथ्यं तस्य कालोऽयमागतः।

अनुज्ञाता त्वया देवमाह्वयेयमहं नृप॥ 12

Pandu continued: O flawless one, you must fulfill my request, which aligns with virtue. O princess, devoted to your husband, it is said by those knowledgeable about morality that a wife should always seek her husband during her monthly time, though at other times she deserves her freedom. The wise consider this to be an age-old practice. Regardless of whether the act is right or wrong, the Vedas state that wives should follow the commands of their husbands. 

Especially, O beautiful one, I, who cannot have children yet yearn to see them, deserve your obedience. O lovely one, with my hands pressed together and shaped like a cup of lotus leaves, I place them on my head to honor you. O you of lovely appearance, you are obliged to bear children upon my request, through a Brahman of great spiritual merit. For then, thanks to you, O you with graceful hips, I may follow the path of those blessed with children. 

Vaisampayana continued, 'After being addressed by Pandu, the conqueror of warring cities, beautiful Kunti, always mindful of what pleased and benefited her husband, replied, 'In my youth, dear lord, while at my father's home, I dedicated myself to serving our guests. I honored and attended to the Brahmanas known for their strict vows and immense spiritual power. One day, I pleased the revered sage Durvasa, a master of self-control and knowledge of all spiritual truths, with my service. Grateful for my care, he granted me a boon, giving me a sacred mantra to summon any celestial being I wished to appear before me. The sage promised, 

 'Whoever among the celestials you call will come to you, willing or not, and you shall also bear children through his grace.' O Bharata, this was told to me while I was still at home with my father. The Brahmana's words can never be untrue, and now the time has come for them to bear fruit. Following your command, O wise royal sage, I can use that mantra to call on any celestial, so we may have blessed children. O trusted truth-teller, guide me on which celestial I should summon. I eagerly await your instructions on this matter.'

पाण्डुरुवाच।

अद्यैव त्वं वरारोहे प्रयतस्व यथाविधि।

धर्ममावाहय शुभॆ स हि दॆवॆषु पुण्यभाक्॥1

सा तथोक्ता तथेत्युक्त्वा तेन भर्त्रा वराङ्गना।

अभिवाद्याभ्यनुज्ञाता प्रदक्षिणमथाकरोत्॥ 2

Pandu said, 'O beautiful one, make a real effort today to fulfill our desires. Lucky one, call upon the god of justice (Dharma). He is the most virtuous among the divine beings.' 

Then Kunti, the finest of women, replied to her lord, 'As you wish.' After bowing to him and respectfully walking around him, she agreed to follow his command.

वैशम्पायन उवाच।

संवत्सरोषिते गर्भे गान्धार्या जनमेजय।

आजुबहाव ततो धर्मं कुन्ती गर्भार्थमच्युतम्॥ 1

सा बलिं त्वरिता देवी धर्मायोपजहार ह।

जजाप विधिवज्जप्यं दत्तं दुर्वाससा पुरा॥ 2

आजगाम ततो देवीं धर्मो मन्त्रबलात्ततः।

विमाने सूर्यसङ्काशे कुन्ती यत्र जपस्थिता॥ 3

विहस्य तां ततो ब्रूयाः कुन्ति किं ते ददाम्यहम्।

सा तं विहस्यमानापि पुत्रं देह्यब्रवीदिदम्॥ 4

ऐन्द्रे चन्द्रमसा युक्ते मुहूर्तेऽभिजितेऽष्टमे।

दिवा मध्यगते सूर्ये तिथौ पूर्णे हि पूजिते॥ 5

समृद्धयसशं कुन्ती सुषाव प्रवरं सुतम्।

Vaisampayana said, 'O Janamejaya, when Gandhari had been pregnant for a full year, Kunti called upon the eternal god of justice to bless her with a child. She promptly offered sacrifices to the god and began to chant the sacred formula that Durvasa had taught her earlier. Overcome by her prayers, the god appeared before her in his radiant celestial chariot.

With a smile, he asked, 'What do you desire, Kunti?' Kunti, smiling back, replied, 'I wish for a child.' Then Kunti united with the god of justice in his divine form and was blessed with a son devoted to the welfare of all. She bore this remarkable child at the eighth Muhurta, Abhijit, precisely at noon on an auspicious day in the seventh month (Kartika), on the fifth day of the waxing fortnight, when the star Jyeshtha was rising with the moon.

वैशम्पायन उवाच।

ततः कालेन सा गर्भं धृतराष्ट्राद अथाग्रहीत

संवत्सरद्वयं तं तु गान्धारी गर्भमाहितम ॥ 1

अप्रजा धारयाम आस ततस तां दुःखम आविशत

श्रुत्वा कुन्तीसुतं जातं बालार्कसमतेजसम ॥ 2

उदरस्यात्मनः सथैर्यम उपलभ्यान्वचिन्तयत्

अज्ञातं धृतराष्ट्रस्य यत्नेन महता ततः॥ 3

 सॊदरं घातमास गान्धारी दुःखमूर्च्छिता 

 ततॊ जज्ञे मांसपेशी लॊहाष्ठीलेव संहता॥ 4

द्विवर्षसंभृतां कुक्षौ तामुत्स्रष्टुं प्रचक्रमे 

अथ द्वैपायनॊ ज्ञात्वा त्वरितः समुपागमत् ॥5

तां स मांसमयीं पेशीं ददर्श जपतां वरः 

ततॊऽब्रवीत सौबलेयीं किमिदं ते चिकीर्षितम्॥6

सा चात्मनॊ मतं सत्यं शशंस परमर्षये 

गान्धार्युवाच।

जयेष्ठं कुन्तीसुतं जातं श्रुत्वा रविसमप्रभम्॥7

दुःखेन परमेणेदम उदरं पातितं मया 

शतं च किल पुत्राणां वितीर्णं मे त्वया पुरा॥8

इयं च मे मांसपेशी जाता पुत्रशताय वै  

व्यास उवाच।

एवमेतत् सौबलेयि नैत ज्जात्वन्यथा भवेत्॥9

वितथं नॊक्तपूर्वं मे स्वैरेष्वपि कुतॊ ऽनयथा

घृतपूर्णं कुण्ड शतं क्शिप्रमेव विधीयताम्॥ 10

शीताभिरद्भिरष्ठीलाम इमां च परिषेचय  

सा सिच्यमाना त्वष्ठीला बभूव शतधा तदा॥11

एकाधिक शतं पूर्णं यथायॊगं विशांपते

मांसपेश्यास्तदा राजन् क्रमषश: कालपर्ययात्॥12

ततसतांस्तेषु कुण्डेषु गर्भानवदधे तदा।

स्वनुगुप्तेषु देशेषु रक्षां च व्यदधात् ततः॥13

शशास चैव भगवान् कालेनैतावता पुनः।

 उद्घाटनीयान्येतानि कुण्डानीति च सौबलीम॥14

इत्युक्त्वा भगवान वयास: तथा प्रतिनिधाय च।

जगाम तपसे धीमान हिमवन्तं शिलॊच्चयम्॥15

Vaisampayana said, After some time, Gandhari became pregnant and carried her burden for two long years without giving birth, which troubled her greatly.

During this time, she learned that Kunti had given birth to a son radiant like the morning sun. Overcome with impatience from her prolonged pregnancy and suffering from grief, she struck her womb violently, unaware of her husband's presence. From her womb emerged a hard mass of flesh, resembling an iron ball. Just as she was about to discard it, Dwaipayana, using his divine abilities, arrived and saw the fleshy mass, asking Gandhari, 'What have you done?' 

Gandhari, not hiding her sorrow, explained to the sage, 'Hearing that Kunti had a son as brilliant as the sun, I struck my womb in despair. You, O Rishi, promised me a hundred sons, but here is only a ball of flesh!' Vyasa replied, 'Daughter of Suvala, that is indeed true. But my words are never empty. I have not spoken falsely, even in jest. Let us not discuss other matters. Bring me a hundred pots of clarified butter at once and place them in a hidden spot. Meanwhile, sprinkle cool water over this flesh.'' 

Vaisampayana continued, 'That ball of flesh, when sprinkled with water, eventually split into a hundred and one parts, each roughly the size of a thumb. These were placed in pots filled with clarified butter, hidden away and closely guarded. The great sage Vyasa instructed the daughter of Suvala to uncover the pots after two years had passed. After giving these instructions, the wise Dwaipayana went to the Himavat mountains to practice asceticism.
