सञ्जय उवाच॥ विहृत्य च ततो राजन्सहिताः कुरुपाण्डवाः । व्यतीतायां तु शर्वर्यां पुनर्युद्धाय निर्ययुः ॥ 1॥ ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा धृष्टद्युम्नमभाषत । व्यूहं व्यूह महाबाहो मकरं शत्रुतापनम् ॥ 2॥ व्यूहं दृष्ट्वा तु तत्सैन्यं पिता देवव्रतस्तव । क्रौञ्चेन महता राजन्प्रत्यव्यूहत वाहिनीम् ॥ 3॥ ततो युद्धाय सञ्जग्मुः पाण्डवाः कौरवैः सह । सूर्योदये महाराज ततो युद्धमभून्महत् ॥ 4॥ भीमसेनस्तु कौन्तेयो द्रोणं दृष्ट्वा पराक्रमी । अभ्ययाज्जवनैरश्वैर्भारद्वाजस्य वाहिनीम् ॥ 5॥ द्रोणस्तु समरे क्रुद्धो भीमं नवभिरायसैः । विव्याध समरे राजन्मर्माण्युद्दिश्य वीर्यवान् ॥ 6॥ दृढाहतस्ततो भीमो भारद्वाजस्य संयुगे । सारथिं प्रेषयामास यमस्य सदनं प्रति ॥ 7॥ स सङ्गृह्य स्वयं वाहान्भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् । व्यधमत्पाण्डवीं सेनां तूलराशिमिवानलः ॥ 8॥ अभिद्येतां ततो व्यूहौ तस्मिन्वीरवरक्षये । आसीद्व्यतिकरो घोरस्तव तेषां च भारत ॥ 9॥ भीमसेनस्तु निशितैर्बाणैर्भित्त्वा महाचमूम् । आससाद ततो वीरः सर्वान्दुर्योधनानुजान् ॥ 10 दुःशासनं दुर्विषहं दुःसहं दुर्मदं जयम् । जयत्सेनं विकर्णं च चित्रसेनं सुदर्शनम् ॥ 11॥ चारुचित्रं सुवर्माणं दुष्कर्णं कर्णमेव च । एतानन्यांश्च सुबहून्समीपस्थान्महारथान् ॥ 12 धार्तराष्ट्रान्सुसङ्क्रुद्धान्दृष्ट्वा भीमो महाबलः । भीष्मेण समरे गुप्तां प्रविवेश महाचमूम् ॥ 13॥ अथाह्वयन्त तेऽन्योन्यमयं प्राप्तो वृकोदरः । जीवग्राहं निगृह्णीमो वयमेनं नराधिपाः ॥ 14॥ स तैः परिवृतः पार्थो भ्रातृभिः कृतनिश्चयैः । प्रजासंहरणे सूर्यः क्रूरैरिव महाग्रहैः ॥ 15॥ सम्प्राप्य मध्यं व्यूहस्य न भीः पाण्डवमाविशत् । यथा देवासुरे युद्धे महेन्द्रः प्राप्य दानवान् ॥ 16 ॥ स तेषां प्रवरान्योधान्हस्त्यश्वरथसादिनः । जघान समरे शूरो धार्तराष्ट्रानचिन्तयन् ॥ 17॥ दृष्ट्वा विशोकं समरे भीमसेनस्य सारथिम् । धृष्टद्युम्नो महाराज दुर्मना गतचेतनः ॥ 18॥ अपृच्छद्बाष्पसंरुद्धो निस्वनां वाचमीरयन् । मम प्राणैः प्रियतमः क्व भीम इति दुःखितः ॥ 19॥ विशोकस्तमुवाचेदं धृष्टद्युम्नं कृताञ्जलिः । संस्थाप्य मामिह बली पाण्डवेयः प्रतापवान् ॥ 20॥ प्रविष्टो धार्तराष्ट्राणामेतद्बलमहार्णवम् । मामुक्त्वा पुरुषव्याघ्र प्रीतियुक्तमिदं वचः ॥ 21॥ प्रतिपालय मां सूत नियम्याश्वान्मुहूर्तकम् । यावदेतान्निहन्म्याशु य इमे मद्वधोद्यताः ॥ 22॥ ततो दृष्ट्वा गदाहस्तं प्रधावन्तं महाबलम् । सर्वेषामेव सैन्यानां सङ्घर्षः समजायत ॥ 23॥ तस्मिंस्तु तुमुले युद्धे वर्तमाने भयानके । भित्त्वा राजन्महाव्यूहं प्रविवेश सखा तव ॥ 24॥ विशोकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि पार्षतः । प्रत्युवाच ततः सूतं रणमध्ये महाबलः ॥ 25॥ सोऽहं तत्र गमिष्यामि यत्र यातो वृकोदरः । निघ्नन्तं मामरीन्पश्य दानवानिव वासवम् ॥ 26॥ एवमुक्त्वा ततो वीरो ययौ मध्येन भारतीम् । भीमसेनस्य मार्गेषु गदाप्रमथितैर्गजैः ॥ 27॥ अथोपगच्छच्छरविक्षताङ्गं; पदातिनं क्रोधविषं वमन्तम् । आश्वासयन्पार्षतो भीमसेनं; गदाहस्तं कालमिवान्तकाले ॥ 28॥ निःशल्यमेनं च चकार तूर्ण;मारोपयच्चात्मरथं महात्मा । भृशं परिष्वज्य च भीमसेन;माश्वासयामास च शत्रुमध्ये ॥ 29॥ शरैरवर्षन्द्रुपदस्य पुत्रं; यथाम्बुदा भूधरं वारिजालैः ॥ निहत्य तांश्चापि शरैः सुतीक्ष्णै;र्न विव्यथे समरे चित्रयोधी ॥ 30॥ समभ्युदीर्णांश्च तवात्मजांस्तथा; निशाम्य वीरानभितः स्थितान्रणे । जिघांसुरुग्रं द्रुपदात्मजो युवा; प्रमोहनास्त्रं युयुजे महारथः ॥ 31॥ क्रुद्धो भृशं तव पुत्रेषु राज;न्दैत्येषु यद्वत्समरे महेन्द्रः ॥ ततो व्यमुह्यन्त रणे नृवीराः; प्रमोहनास्त्राहतबुद्धिसत्त्वाः ॥ 32 प्रदुद्रुवुः कुरवश्चैव सर्वे; सवाजिनागाः सरथाः समन्तात् ॥ परीतकालानिव नष्टसञ्ज्ञा;न्मोहोपेतांस्तव पुत्रान्निशम्य ॥ 33॥ अथ शुश्राव तेजस्वी द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः । प्रमोहनास्त्रेण रणे मोहितानात्मजांस्तव ॥ 34॥ ततः प्रज्ञास्त्रमादाय मोहनास्त्रं व्यशातयत् ॥ अथ प्रत्यागतप्राणास्तव पुत्रा महारथाः ॥ 35	35 (588)
Sanjaya said, "After a brief rest, O king, the Kurus and the Pandavas prepared for battle again at dawn. King Yudhishthira turned to Dhrishtadyumna and instructed, 'Mighty warrior, form the troops in the Makara array that scorches our enemies.' Then your father, Devavrata, seeing the Pandava forces positioned in this way, arranged his own army in a counter formation resembling a giant crane. The sun had risen, and the Pandavas charged at the Kauravas to engage in battle. Bhimasena, son of Kunti, filled with strength, charged towards Drona and his division, propelled by his swift horses. Enraged in the fight, Drona struck Bhima with nine iron arrows aimed at his vital spots. Deeply wounded, Bhima retaliated and sent Drona's charioteer to the land of the dead. Then, the powerful son of Bharadwaja, holding back his horses, began to devastate the Pandava army like fire consuming dry grass. In this fierce combat that ravaged heroes, great distress fell upon both your army and theirs, O Bharata." The powerful Bhima saw Dussasana, Durvisaha, Dussaha, Durmada, Jaya, Jayasena, Vikarna, Chitrasena, Sudarsana, Charuchitra, Suvarman, Duskarna, Karna, and many other fierce charioteers from the Dhartarashtra army who were close enough to be a threat, and he charged into their formidable ranks, which Bhishma was guarding in battle. As he approached them, all those warriors exclaimed, 'Let’s kill this one!'—and so, Bhima found himself encircled by his cousins who were determined to end his life. In that moment, Bhima shone like the sun, fiercely radiant and surrounded by ominous planets during a cataclysm. Despite being in the heart of the enemy forces, he felt no fear, just as Indra had not felt fear when facing the Danavas in that ancient battle between the gods and demons. Then, the valiant Bhima, ignoring the sons of Dhritarashtra, killed many of the top warriors of the Kaurava army, whether they fought on chariots, elephants, or horses. As Dhrishtadyumna watched the chaos unfold, he felt a deep sorrow wash over him. His voice trembling with tears, he turned to Visoka and asked, 'Where is Bhima, my dear friend, so precious to me as my own life?' Visoka clasped his hands and replied, 'The mighty son of Pandu, strong and fearless, told me to wait for him here while he charges alone into the Dhartarashtra forces, which look like a vast ocean. He cheerfully said to me, ‘Hold the horses for just a moment, until I take down those who seek my end.’ Seeing Bhima rush in, mace in hand, our troops cheered with joy. In this brutal battle, your friend has shattered the enemy lines and pushed into their ranks.' Hearing Visoka’s words, the valiant Dhrishtadyumna resolutely declared, 'I will follow Bhima into battle. Watch me as I slay the enemies like Vasava defeating the Danavas.' With that, the brave Dhrishtadyumna charged forward through the enemy ranks, following the path cleared by Bhimasena, marked by the bodies of elephants crushed under his mace. Then Dhrishtadyumna, seeing Bhimasena battered by arrows, walking painfully across the battlefield and seething with anger, rushed to his side. With his mace in hand, he resembled the Destroyer at the time of the world's end. Dhrishtadyumna helped Bhimasena onto his chariot, removed the arrows from his body, and warmly embraced him, offering comfort amidst their enemies. Your sons took up their fine bows, shaking the ground with the sound of their bowstrings and the rumble of their chariots, unleashing a rain of arrows upon Drupada's son. Despite being hit by sharp arrows, the hero remained steadfast. The young car-warrior, son of Drupada, determined to defeat your sons, unleashed a fierce weapon called Pramohana, engaging them like Indra fighting the Danavas. As the Pramohana struck, your heroic fighters lost their senses, their minds and strength weakened. The Kauravas scattered in fear, their horses, elephants, and chariots fleeing as they saw your sons incapacitated like those nearing death. Then, the son of Bharadwaja, eager to save the princes, quickly left his position on the battlefield and rushed to where your sons lay. He seized the weapon called Prajna and neutralized the Pramohana, restoring your sons to their senses..
सञ्जय उवाच॥ ततो दुर्योधनो राजा लोहितायति भास्करे । सङ्ग्रामरभसो भीमं हन्तुकामोऽभ्यधावत ॥ 1॥ तमायान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य नृवीरं दृढवैरिणम् । भीमसेनः सुसङ्क्रुद्ध इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ 2॥ अयं स कालः सम्प्राप्तो वर्षपूगाभिकाङ्क्षितः । अद्य त्वां निहनिष्यामि यदि नोत्सृजसे रणम् ॥ 3॥ अद्य कुन्त्याः परिक्लेशं वनवासं च कृत्स्नशः । द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं प्रणोत्स्यामि हते त्वयि ॥ 4॥ यत्त्वं दुरोदरो भूत्वा पाण्डवानवमन्यसे । तस्य पापस्य गान्धारे पश्य व्यसनमागतम् ॥ 5॥ कर्णस्य मतमाज्ञाय सौबलस्य च यत्पुरा । अचिन्त्य पाण्डवान्कामाद्यथेष्टं कृतवानसि ॥ 6॥ याचमानं च यन्मोहाद्दाशार्हमवमन्यसे । उलूकस्य समादेशं यद्ददासि च हृष्टवत् ॥ 7॥ अद्य त्वा निहनिष्यामि सानुबन्धं सबान्धवम् । समीकरिष्ये तत्पापं यत्पुरा कृतवानसि ॥ 8॥ एवमुक्त्वा धनुर्घोरं विकृष्योद्भ्राम्य चासकृत् । समादाय शरान्घोरान्महाशनिसमप्रभान् ॥ 9॥ षड्विंशत्तरसा क्रुद्धो मुमोचाशु सुयोधने । ज्वलिताग्निशिखाकारान्वज्रकल्पानजिह्मगान् ॥ 10॥ ततोऽस्य कार्मुकं द्वाभ्यां सूतं द्वाभ्यां च विव्यधे । चतुर्भिरश्वाञ्जवनाननयद्यमसादनम् ॥ 11॥ द्वाभ्यां च सुविकृष्टाभ्यां शराभ्यामरिमर्दनः । छत्रं चिच्छेद समरे राज्ञस्तस्य रथोत्तमात् ॥ 12॥ त्रिभिश्च तस्य चिच्छेद ज्वलन्तं ध्वजमुत्तमम् । छित्त्वा तं च ननादोच्चैस्तव पुत्रस्य पश्यतः ॥ 13॥ रथाच्च स ध्वजः श्रीमान्नानारत्नविभूषितः । पपात सहसा भूमिं विद्युज्जलधरादिव ॥ 14॥ ज्वलन्तं सूर्यसङ्काशं नागं मणिमयं शुभम् । ध्वजं कुरुपतेश्छिन्नं ददृशुः सर्वपार्थिवाः ॥ 15॥ अथैनं दशभिर्बाणैस्तोत्त्रैरिव महागजम् । आजघान रणे भीमः स्मयन्निव महारथः ॥ 16॥ ततस्तु राजा सिन्धूनां रथश्रेष्ठो जयद्रथः । दुर्योधनस्य जग्राह पार्ष्णिं सत्पुरुषोचिताम् ॥ 17॥ कृपश्च रथिनां श्रेष्ठः कौरव्यममितौजसम् । आरोपयद्रथं राजन्दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ॥ 18॥ स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो भीमसेनेन संयुगे । निषसाद रथोपस्थे राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ॥ 19॥ शतानीकस्तु समरे दृढं विस्फार्य कार्मुकम् । विव्याध दशभिस्तूर्णं जयत्सेनं शिलीमुखैः ॥ 20॥ अथान्येन सुतीक्ष्णेन सर्वावरणभेदिना । शतानीको जयत्सेनं विव्याध हृदये भृशम् ॥ 21॥ तथा तस्मिन्वर्तमाने दुष्कर्णो भ्रातुरन्तिके । चिच्छेद समरे चापं नाकुलेः क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥ 22॥ अथान्यद्धनुरादाय भारसाधनमुत्तमम् । समादत्त शितान्बाणाञ्शतानीको महाबलः ॥ 23॥ तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चामन्त्र्य दुष्कर्णं भ्रातुरग्रतः । मुमोच निशितान्बाणाञ्ज्वलितान्पन्नगानिव ॥ 24॥ ततोऽस्य धनुरेकेन द्वाभ्यां सूतं च मारिष । चिच्छेद समरे तूर्णं तं च विव्याध सप्तभिः ॥ 25॥ अश्वान्मनोजवांश्चास्य कल्माषान्वीतकल्मषः । जघान निशितैस्तूर्णं सर्वान्द्वादशभिः शरैः ॥ 26॥ अथापरेण भल्लेन सुमुक्तेन निपातिना । दुष्कर्णं समरे क्रुद्धो विव्याध हृदये भृशम् ॥ 27॥ दुष्कर्णं निहतं दृष्ट्वा पञ्च राजन्महारथाः । जिघांसन्तः शतानीकं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥ 28॥ छाद्यमानं शरव्रातैः शतानीकं यशस्विनम् । अभ्यधावन्त संरब्धाः केकयाः पञ्च सोदराः ॥ 29॥ तानभ्यापततः प्रेक्ष्य तव पुत्रा महारथाः । प्रत्युद्ययुर्महाराज गजा इव महागजान् ॥ 30॥ दुर्मुखो दुर्जयश्चैव तथा दुर्मर्षणो युवा । शत्रुञ्जयः शत्रुसहः सर्वे क्रुद्धा यशस्विनः ॥ प्रत्युद्याता महाराज केकयान्भ्रातरः समम् ॥ 31॥ अन्योन्यागस्कृतां राजन्यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम् ॥ मुहूर्तास्तमिते सूर्ये चक्रुर्युद्धं सुदारुणम् ॥ 32	32 (620)
Sanjaya said, "As the sun turned red, King Duryodhana, eager for battle, charged at Bhima with the intent to kill him. Seeing the fierce warrior with deep hatred approaching, Bhimasena, filled with intense anger, declared, 'The moment I've long awaited has arrived. I will defeat you today unless you retreat from this fight. By killing you, I will lift the burdens of Kunti and Draupadi and erase the pain we suffered during our time in exile. You, blinded by arrogance, once humiliated the sons of Pandu. Look now, son of Gandhari, at the bitter outcome of your wicked actions. Guided by Karna and the son of Subala, you showed little regard for us Pandavas, acting towards us as you pleased. You even disregarded Krishna’s pleas for peace. For all these reasons, I will end your life today along with all your kin, avenging your past offenses.' After speaking these words, Bhima skillfully drew back his bow, armed with many fearsome arrows gleaming like lightning, and in his wrath, released thirty-six at Duryodhana. The arrows flew like flames and struck with the fury of thunder. He pierced Duryodhana's bow with two arrows and hit his charioteer with another two. With four arrows, he sent Duryodhana's steeds to Yama's realm. Then, with two powerful arrows, he severed the king's umbrella from his splendid chariot, and with three more, he cut down his beautiful and radiant banner." After cutting it off, he shouted loudly right in front of your son. The beautiful standard of the latter, adorned with various gems, suddenly fell to the ground from his chariot like a flash of lightning from the sky. All the kings saw that striking standard of the Kuru king, marked with an elephant design, sparkling like the sun, tumble down, severed by Bhimasena. Then the mighty warrior Bhima shot Duryodhana in battle, smiling as he did so, with ten arrows, like a guide driving a strong elephant with a hook. Next, the valiant king of the Sindhus, supported by many brave soldiers, placed himself next to Duryodhana's side. Following that, the great warrior Kripa helped the vengeful Duryodhana, son of the Kuru lineage, of immense strength, onto his own chariot. King Duryodhana, badly wounded by Bhimasena and in great pain, took a seat on the edge of that chariot. Meanwhile, Satanika, drawing his bow with fierce strength, quickly struck Jayatsena with ten arrows and roared like a raging elephant. Then, with a sharp arrow that could penetrate any armour, Satanika struck Jayatsena deeply in the chest. Just then, Dushkarna, who was close to his brother Jayatsena and filled with fury, cut away Satanika's bow and arrows. Then the powerful Satanika picked up another strong bow, one that could handle great tension, and aimed many sharp arrows. He spoke to Dushkarna, who stood with his brother Jayatsena, saying, 'Hold on, hold on,' before releasing those fiery arrows that moved like snakes. In a flash, he shattered Dushkarna's bow with one arrow, killed his charioteer with two, and struck Dushkarna himself with seven arrows. The pure-hearted warrior then took down all of Dushkarna's swift, colourful horses with a dozen sharp arrows. With another well-aimed broad-headed arrow, fuelled by intense rage, Satanika drove it deep into Dushkarna's chest. Dushkarna fell to the ground like a tree hit by lightning. Seeing him defeated, five powerful warriors surrounded Satanika, eager to take him down. They unleashed a storm of arrows at the famed Satanika. Then the five Kekaya brothers, filled with fury, rushed to help him. Seeing them approach, your sons—those formidable charioteers—charged at them like elephants charging against powerful foes.
